Forgive me for poking my oar in here but here's a shot of mine wearing 235/40/18s taken some time ago which will give you a rough idea of how much the front wheels protrude from the front 'fender' arch.

Thank you, I appreciate your poking. It is just so hard to tell from photos, with the angle having such a dramatic impact on how it looks. Would say the wheel does protrude at the top or is flush, say if you used a level from the fender to the top of the wheel? Thanks again.

The rear sits quite flush, the front tread is roughly level with the outer edge of the front fender (wing in English!!!) but the sidewall protrudes a centimetre or so (third of an inch). Some of this will depend on how meaty the rim protector is on the chosen tyre (mine are Pirellis). 225s on the front will sit quite square on an 8 inch rim and don't protrude in my experience. I previously had BBS 8x18 inch wheels with ET44 on the car which is only a 3mm difference in offset and these didn't protrude at all.

Thanks again, for your evaluation and for helping me with proper English and the metric conversion. I love the Interlagos wheels, so I was hoping maybe 8" ET41 was really the perfect set-up too, for totally flush, but maybe 8" ET44 or ET45 really are the ultimate. With just the sidewall poking, not the tread, maybe I will love them. I do like the big stocky look. I was also hoping that maybe the top of the wheel rim would also be flush. With the negative camber, even though 235 width is wider than the 8" wheel, it seems the upper lip of the wheel could be out from under the "wing". Would you say the top of the wheel is flush, or poking?

It's hard to tell 100% whether the actual wheel is flush with the arch (fender/wing  ) due the the bulging sidewalls on the tyres. I would guess that it's just about level but can't offer a cast iron guarantee. Maybe if you could PM SteveP on here who is currently running Speedline 8x18 wheels with 225s on the front and 235s on the back and are a 42mm offset, which is near as dammit identical dimensions, for an idea how his look.
There may be pictures in the 'non Monza wheel thread' on here of his car and I know he's posted some up on golfmk6.com

Maybe a better question is how do you like the wheels? Do you like the stocky look, or would you say they stick out too far for you? Do you love the wheels? Do you wish they were ET44 or ET45 for any reason?

One other thing, do you think you would repurchase the 235/4018 tires, or would you likely go down to 225/40/18? I'm thinking the answer may help me better understand how you like the set-up. From other posts, I have seen comments about better filling the gap and also improved comfort, especially for someone coming from a 17" wheel.

I think I might love them and maybe can't know until I get them myself, but I'm just trying to avoid buyer's remorse.

Thanks again for you help and for answering too many questions from me!!!

I really like the wheels. The fronts sticking out is at the worst a very minor annoyance, but the extra bulge of the tyre protects them well from kerbs.
ET44 would be better maybe but it's only 3mm which is nothing. There are plenty of guys with mk5s and mk6s with ET44 19'' BBSs wearing 235/35s with no issues.
The fact the Interlagos have a slight dish and fill out the wheel arches so well adds to the chunky look of the Golf, when I had the BBSs on with their 225 tyres they didn't sit quite right at the rear for some reason but the 235s fill the rear arches right up.
Everyone who sees them in the flesh seems to like them, they look far more chunky in the flesh than in photos. The mk6 seems to only suit certain designs of wheel unlike the mk5 which looks good on so many different types of wheel IMO, and I reckon the Interlagos suit it just fine.
Am I happy with them? Yes.
Will I change them? Maybe, but only if I get bored of them (this is the fifth set of wheels I've had on the car!) and fancy a change for changes sake.

I still love the look of the interlagos alloys on the GTI even though I've sold mine on. The rear wheels sit absolutaly perfect and fill the wheel arches beautifully. The only downside is the fronts which protrude out approximatly 13mm. This is the only thing I couldn't really grow to love with these wheels. I also think these wheels suit a darker colour car slightly better. If I was you I'd go for it and get yourself a set. Worst comes to worst you can always sell them on if there not your thing.

Wow, you just scared me MAW73, 13mm!!! I hope you are saying they sit 13mm out compared to some other wheel. It sounds like at most they might protrude just a few mm and maybe not at all with 225/40/18 tires. I do have a darker car, so the look should be good.

Honestly, it all really sounds quite encouraging, except MAW73's 13mm. I'm glad to hear Exonian likes the wheels so well, which is saying something for someone that changes wheels so frequently! I do love the look of the wheels and I generally like a stocky set-up, so maybe it really will be perfect for me.

Since the front and rear wheels do sit a bit differently on the MKVI, I suppose the slightly higher offset would skimp on the rear, but maybe be perfect in the front. With the Interlagos and 235/40/18, the rear may be perfect but then the front may be out by just a tad. I think I will like the taller sidewall, since I am still on a stock suspension. Then maybe if I went to a 225/40/18 I would like the more square fit Exonian described and the front would look virtually flush.
