Main cars worth mentioning are:
Mk2 Escort RS2000 (P/1975) - Fantastic gear change, less than 20mpg urban (which hurt when you're a student), got nicked after 2 weeks
Cavalier SRi (A/1983) - What can you say, nice
Mk2 Escort RS2000 (T/1978) - Again lasted two week, someone decided to crash into it and scarper (car was not registered in their name)
Mk3 Escort RS Turbo (C/1985) - Chipped, fantastic road holding, brakes very poor
Astra GTE (H/1991) - Bought from new, did over 200k miles without any hiccups, LED dashboard was a bit wierd
Kids came on the scene, so...
BMW E34 540i (N/1995) - First posh car
Jeep Cherokee CRD (03/2003) - Not good at all apart from when it snowed
BMW E39 530d Sport Touring (03/2003) - Back to some descent kit

When I was a student, a good friend had a brand new Mk1 GTI and I thought it was fantastic.  Couldn't afford one back in those days and have always promised that I would have one (eventually).  Love the new shape, ordered mine today!!!!!

Red F reg Scirocco £1200 lasted a year or two until the leaks and a break-in meaning i couldn't lock the boot made me get rid of it (it was a money-pit anyway)

Green M reg Golf Match £3k (60bhp - i was seriously disappointed and the colour was rank)

P reg Beemer 316 compact £5k - heavily discounted as i bought from my gran's friend. 22k on the clock when i got it and pretty much new condition. great car but light grey cloth seats are never a good idea. no a/c was starting to be a problem!

55 Scooby Impreza WRX - brilliant all round. i've only done 30k in it in 4 years so the fuel consumption isn't a major issue for me. its a pain having to fill up twice on the way to cornwall, particularly if i leave after work and get to the sticks, out of fuel with the petrol stations starting to close. Only really reason i'm chaning is i want to go for an auto and the DSG/ S-tronic is the best available, with nice flappy paddles.

GTI on order (as below) plan to keep for about 6 years, hence going for the nuts   
i really rather like the idea of an r20, so i'm hoping its going to be a lot more expensive, and awful on fuel.

if its near the £29k i'm paying with xenons, leather and the other options i'm going for i might be crying a little bit

Thats a great spec DDarko!

I wouldnt worry about the R20.. its going to be alot more expensive than £29k. Also there is usually a couple of special editions released along the way (e.g. ed30) So should you want to chop yours in and change after 3/4 years you will probably still get a really good price for yours.

2009  Waiting for the Golf GTI MK6 2.0 to replace the 135i

Hmm, the GTI is good, but I'm not sure it's THAT good... 6 cyl, RWD...? 

I can confirm the Mk6 Gti is better than a 135i coupe
1. Better ride
2. Sharper steering
3. More expensive looking interior
4. Better gearchange
5. Cheaper to buy and to run
There is only 1 thing the 135i is better---That engine goes like stink and sounds+feels like a normal aspirated car rather than turbo-charged

I would still take the 135i 

I doubt you would in the winter!
