As far as I'm concerned, "modifications" means stuff you do to the car after it's delivered to you.  And that will be how I will interpret any such question.  If they want to know which factory-fit options the car is coming with, then they'll have to ask me that, and if they ask, I will tell them.

Colleague here is getting a Passat CC today - he said that the insurance docs for his Skoda (56 reg) had his upgraded alloys and Sports suspension listed as factory fit even though he didn't tell them.

Presumably goes into the insurance database when first registered - learn something every day!

No its an MKV, if it has been my new GTI im picking up in 2 weeks, after consolling myself i would be on a warpath to kill someone!!

I had a look when i was there and can't see any CCTV cameras that would cover it so i think im screwed!! I mean i park at the back so people don't park next to me and they still manage to that and then blinking crash into me!

Sorry for getting a bit off topic on this post, just felt i had to vent some anger to feel better!

no problem, i would be the same, there are so many w@nkers out there that do this kind of stuff its ridiculous.  you'll probably find it was some chav girl on her lunch break, hit you with her peugeut piece of sh1t and then drove off feeling not an ounce of guilt.  people like that should be shot.

just for the record, you must declare ALL optional extras, otherwise if your car goes walkies.. you only get a basic spec replacement.. as they add to the value of the car.

On the hit and run topic - the world is full of first class c0ck suckers. I always park as far away as possible when I go to Tesco, where there are as few cars as possible. More often than not you come back to find that someone has parked a f#cking pikey-wagon about 3 inches from your car. T0ssers.

Re: insurance companies - mostly they are all w@nkers. I have been using Admiral lately as they are way cheaper than anyone else. Had to make a claim about two years ago and they royally shafted me. I ended up paying about 50% of the claim because many of the parts replaced were mechanical and subject to 'wear and tear'. Don't get me started.

When I switched to the GTI this year, they specifically asked me if the car had any factory options fitted. I listed the main ones (18" Monza's, Xenons, MFSW etc). The bloke on the phone didn't even know what Xenon headlamps were. HELLO!!!! Gave up in the end. I listed all the stuff, just hope they recorded the phonecall in case there is an issue. Didn't affect the price, but they did say that in the event of a repair they only replace to the same spec as the car came out of the factory so any other 'retro fit' mods are not covered.

Well that does make sense, but to suggest that a car is more dangerous because it has the ACC or the 18" wheels seems a bit silly.

I would assume that they would ask separately about factory-fitted options and post-delivery modifications - if someone just asks me about "modifications" I wouldn't instinctively tell them about the sun roof or the ACC or indeed the pearlescent paint, because to me these are not "modifications".

That does sound perfectly reasonable.

I always thought modding a car was what we added as extras after we had received it ie not put on at the factory, however I can now see why it might be classed as additional packs we add as it is obviously putting the cost of the car up.

However............
What would happen in a years time if I bought a Golf second hand and was asked if it had been modded in any way?
How would I know that the luxury pack, RCD510, camera, 18" alloys, storage pack, winter pack in fact anything on the car, wasn't meant to be included in the original specced car?

Its all very well us buying new cars just now and knowing exactly what is being added as extras but Joe Bloggs in a year or so won't know especially since spec changes all the time?!

Steven.
