8v Replacement Lower-Pulley Bolts?

Hi all,
Did the tappets on my digifant today, and did the cambelt whilst I was at it.  Unfortunately, I rounded off 2 of the allen-key bolts that hold on the lower pulleys, because they are made of cheese.  :rolleyes:

I managed to get them undone by hammering a flare-nut spanner over them... but obviously, I don't want to put them back in. 

It sounds like I'm far from the first person to round off these bolts... so where can I get replacements from?  I'm preferably after a whole set of 4 long ones and 3 short ones (I'm still not convinced that I had to take off that waterpump pulley, but oh well  :grin:).  Even better, would be some alternatives that aren't allens made of cheese haha.

The car will be back on the road on Tuesday, so any quick replies would be appreciated greatly - don't really want to drive the car with 2 bolts holding each pulley on!!  :laugh:

Been here before, you have to take the wp pulley off to get the bottom plastic belt cover off, a bit dumb on the part of VW I think, someone has always been there before and chuffed the bolts, I got my spares form a scrappy, took bolts off three different cars to find a good set. IIRC, the 16v is much easier as you don't have to do this as there is no big drive gear to the dizzy, just a small idler. I'm looking forward to this job (not) on my 8v next weekend and I've already checked out the allen bolts, 4 out of the 7 have been na**ered before and put back........argh! I have some spares for the wp but I guess its back to the scrappy for the crankshaft ones. I'm guessing that someone here has a cunning mod for the bottom cambelt cover so it can come off without taking off the wp pulley...anyone?

funily enough there called cheese head bolts!   :grin:

Yup. Got mine from VW.They are the same as fitted to the Audi A3, and also lots of others too. But Audi A3 came up as substitutes for mine.

Sound... do they do bolts for the waterpump pulley too? (May have rounded off one of those as well  :tongue:)

I just used normal 13mm bolts on the waterpump/pas pulleys - you can still fit a socket over them to nip them up.

I pinched my crank bolts from some random SEAT in a scrappy.

Could you please tell me the hex key size that I need to undo these bolts? I just want to make sure that I don't round them off. In order to take them off, I presume I need to hold the main bolt in the centre to stop the pulley from turning?

IIRC it's a 5mm allen that fits.

The key to getting these undone is shock.

I would seriously recommend if you're going to do this job buy a manual impact driver.  By this I mean the type that you wallop on the end with a hammer, whilst holding it.

While these bolts are more delicate than others, I've had a very high success rate with releasing them using the impact driver, rather than undoing them using an allen key, which will often round them out.

Thanks. Yes, I do have an impact driver. I'll have to check what bits it has. Do I have to hold the centre nut to stop the pulley from turning?
