^^ Scoobys sound AWFUL!!! Why would you want your car to sound like that all the time????

You obviously have a very blinkered view. A non-chavved Scoob and an R32 sound pretty similar with a deep throaty roar when giving it some beans.

As opposed to the GTI which is a more high pitched scream, similar to the aforementioned M3.

You need one of these mate

GTI sounding like an M3

There is a big difference between engine noise and exhaust noise! Subarus try to sound like a V6 by using the exhaust and fail in every way. One of the worst sounding engines. The noise from the R32 is the engine being accentuated by the exhaust, the subaru is just pure exhaust noise. This is proven with the newer shape which use the same engines but different exhausts.

I had an '05 Gti a few months back which sounded very clattery and diesel like on tickover, I was told it was normal but took it to my vw dealer and he found there was a problem with the timing chain housing and some other part that I can't remember!! all was replaced under extended warranty luckily as the work totalled over £1400
Get it checked out......

Do you think you could find out what the other part is?

Took mine to my local dealership and they agreed it didnt sound right, so its booked in for an investigation on wednesday.  I'll be sure to let you know the outsome.  I've got a feeling its going to be the fuel punp and/or timing chain!

Out of interest is this constant or does it disappear when the clutch is pressed? Seems as though I'm getting a similar sounding issue when ever the car is in neutral and idling, once pressed it fads away until its engaged again in neutral.

Mine is a dsg so no clutch. Oddly the engine doesn't tick when its cold, only when its warm. Its only when stationary that i can hear it and inside the car more than outside. The car is 100% perfect other than this noise, i hope it is normal for the engine.
