Yes... it's not swine flu....you have the fuel line rattle illness.

This mod should actually be a dealer recall as nearly all Gti's suffer from the probem. Most dealers do not know of the problem or even the remedy, in the states they have sorted the problem through the dealer network.

Follow the instructions on the link but use stands as well as a jack to be safe.

Like I said, it is not the fuel line rattle.  I did that fix years ago.

It's possible that it is the camchain. The last post on this page http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=87509.0 is from someone who's had a new camchain and pulley because their engine was noisy.

same fuel consumption, just as refined but much much faster.

 How did you manage 30mpg from the M3? I researched them as i was looking to buy but they were thousands more a year to own in running terms (servicing, parts etc) Decided i didnt want a car that meant i needed a few thousand in the bank for when (not if) something went wrong!

I find turbo engined cars are a little noisier mate, maybe you are just use to N/A engines?

....But the Mk5 GTI doesn't have a cam chain - It has a cam belt. A small point, I know, but we don't want to mislead others do we.

The new Mk6, aka Mk5.5, has a cam chain.

There is a cam chain as well RR.  Its on the opposite side to the cam belt.

Use mainly Tesco with the odd V-Power here and there and have had several people look at me with a funny face and ask if its a diesel :(

When you stand at the back all you can hear is the Miltek ticking over but standing at the front it really does sound like a smelly derv :(

Didn't someone say that for the Gti to to work fully FSi it has to be run on mostly super unleaded!
