I've just spoken to a helpful VW dealership and they said "we get a lot of complaints, but it is absolutely normal, its the high pressure fuel pump"....Gutted, i'm not sure i can put up with it!!

Right now i know that everyone here says its normal, in fact i only came on here to find out what the hell was wrong with my car. I've recently purchased a nice 55 plate Golf Gti, 3 dr, Graphite blue, leather + DSG + Monzas. Now i think its great but the ticking from the engine while i'm sitting in traffic is doing my head in, it really does sound like a diesel, even if i rev it a bit when stationary the rattling gets noisier and faster....it's actually worse inside than outside the car.
Now common i cant beleive its meant to be like that!! Surely there's something i can do to cure it?????  :embarassed:

I'm in exactly the same situation, picked up a 06 GTi 3 weeks ago and it sounds like a bag of bolts at idle (esp inside) even when the engine at operating temp.  I have been checking the oil every other day and its spot on but even so as the warranty is due up in a couple of weeks I gonna take it to my local independant for a going over before dropping round to dealers.

Do you get the same noise when the engine is cold, or just when up to temp.  Mine is is nice and quiet when cold and sounds like a Sh!te when warm.

Yes, from cold it sounds fine but as soon as it warms through it starts to sound like a tractor.

Is your engine the AXX or BPY?

Sounds to mer like you have the fuel line rattle....Get your head down near the pedals when the engine is running and let me know if it sounds louder in this area.

Yeah exactly that, fine from cold but sounds rubbish when its warm, if i sit there in neutral at idle it ticks constantly then if i raise the revs the ticking gets faster as the revs increase.

Its not that.  Neither is it the purge valve which I thought it could be for a while.  To me the sound is coming from the cam chain side of the engine.  At first I thought it was the HPFP so I changed it for the APR item. It made no difference to the sound at all.  I am starting to think it is the cam chain.
