Is it kosher?
« on: 08 April 2009, 16:26 »
Well, may have found a super bargain at last today but could be dodgy. 06 plate, black, 3dr, 22k miles with all documents for £9.5k, spoken to the seller and he has given me the reg number to check, he will only accept cash which isn't a problem for me but should i be put off by this? If anybody has access to HPI facilities a little bit of help would be appreciated

Problem with cheques is that they can bounce. You can ask about a banker's draft but I remember hearing about a guy who got a banker's draft, went in to the bank with the purchaser to cash it, it got cashed and then a few days later, the bank found out the guy had no money in the acccount. So cash is a bit safer.

Have the car checked out by a (VW independent) mechanic too. I took my first car to a garage (seller was happy to let me do this) and got it checked out. Nothing required major work so bought it.

Yeah, I mentioned bankers draught (I work for a bank - don't flame me!), he said cash would be easier for VAT purposes, whatever, his choice, but is this normal? Problem is he's about 200 miles away, he is prepeared to travel and meet halfway which is great but doesn't give me the oppurtunity to have a real good look at the car.

That is a bargain, but don't be put off by them! I just bought a fully loaded (inc sat nav) 3dr 55 plate with 54k miles for £8.8. Miles probably reflects the price, but its still trade value.

If people want/need to sell - then you can find some great bargains out there.

get it in £100s and it's hardly a pile at all.

I did this once (well £7k).  Went on a 3 hour train journey with an envelope full of cash.  Suddenly everyone lookes shifty when you are carrying that.  In retrospect it could easily have been a set up but the guy sounded legit on the phone so I took the risk, I'd never do it again though.

Lol I've been there. Carrying £5k on a train (not for buying a car). Also taken £3k to a car auction and was paranoid it'd fall out of my pocket, despite it being securely stored.
