2.0 GTI, any good??
« on: 31 March 2009, 20:31 »
Hey there, new on the forum. looking to buy a mk4 GTI but can olny afford a 2.0 115bhp jobbie. Are they worth getting and can you tune them up etc? Previosly had a 1,6SE which was ok apart from gearbox issues. Curruntly own a MG ZR 1.8 160bhp which is a fair bit quicker than the 2.0 gti but i really miss the comfort etc of my mk4 golf.

Any comments would be welcome as im looking at the 3rd one this coming saturday. thanks.

Hmmmmm I would go for the 1.8 N/A 125bhp over the 2.0 TBH

Is the 2.0 litre gti not really liked on here?

Save for a 1.8T really worth it in the end IMO.

The 2.0 is not hated most of us like to do lots of mods to our engines and the 2.0 is not ideal for this.

Its fine if you dont want to modify it (Can be done but not that easy and costs a bit) - good solid car

I had a 2.0 and swapped the engine for a 1.8T as i loved the car but hated the performance,

the 2.0 is slow and not that great MPG wise

HOWEVER you can pick them up cheaper than the tdi's and 1.8T's as you have said

they come with the same GTI refinements as all the other GTI's insurance wise there isnt a big difference between them i know a few people with the 2.0 engine in other models ie passat/bora and I have to say the 2.0 seems a lot more reliable than the 1.8t
