I am a Somerset lad too mate!!

As for the cars, I have never owned a 2.0 but I think they are good solid cars as Rich said. As you say they are cheaper to buy but they do drink the fuel considering the lack of performance they give. My advice would be to try and find that lurking cheap 1.8T out there as over time you could actually save money!

Well I had a 1999 2.0.

I bought it new and had it for 3 years and just over 70,000miles. The only thing that broke was the water pump impeller and a window regulator.

Performance wasn't great but it was quick enough. On a sprited drive I kept up with my Bro-in-law in his Octavia VRS, but then it is always easier to follow. It was nice and smooth and if you take it for what it is, it does the job very well. Ecconomy was around high 30's where my next car (Leon Cupra) did low 30's.

They are a good solid car that you can mod to look good, but you will never make it into a fast car without spending mega bucks. If you want to go fast, wait a bit longer for a 1.8T, or better still buy an Octavia.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.
