One of the guys on another forum ran his for another 24 miles after the range went to zero and still managed to get to a filling station before running out
That is the most extreme case I have heard of......unless someone else knows more!!

that was me John  , and alas I didnt make it to the petrol station I had to walk there and back with a fuel can

Does this mean you actually carry a fuel can, or did you have to buy one once you got there?

Tempting fate carrying the can (pun intended!)

Is it dangerous to always have a half-full can in the back of the car? I suspect the answer is a resounding yes but just checking :D

Regard the reserve part of the tank below the redline as the half a can of fuel and you're good to go....err...and not have to run out

I ran out of petrol in my Mk5 R32 in South Spain while going to Gibraltar on Christmas Day.  The car showed 0 miles and the towns I was going past looked really dodgy or were all closed up for Christmas.  I ended up doing 40 mph on the motorway and all the cars I'd arrogantly whizzed past during the previous 2 hours came past, probably thinking something insulting  :embarassed:   I managed to do about 25 miles on a 0 mile tank display and had to get the bl00dy car up a mountain just before the next service station.

I always fill my current car to the brim as soon as it gets to the last quarter mark! Usually does me for the week.
I'd probably be the same when I get the GTI to be honest!

I have yet to ever see the red light in my car!! lol

Last saturday, I did about 38 miles, after  the computer was showing 0 miles. Apparently, most cars are built with a reserve of around 1.5 Gallons after the 0 miles is shown on the trip. I once ran my Ibiza Cupra TDI for almost 70 miles before i chickened it! lol!

Well then this thing about the golf having a 55ltr tnk has got be a load of crap. I was on 10 miles last week then filled her up and still managed to squeeze in 58ltrs. So without a doubt the tank is bigger than they suggest in the text.
