8v is just too gutless. 115bhp in a "GTI".... come on.

Im not having a pop or trying to put anyone down here. This is coming from an ex 8v owner btw.

Was that your mk4 8v?? they are slooooowwwww  :lipsrsealed:

Correct that was my MK4 2.0 8v. Same lump tho. Ok, I might have been carrying a little bit more weight, not loads more tho.

16v might be 150bhp in place of 115bhp but torque matters and a 16v is only around 11lbs ft more.
HEAR HEAR!

people start going on about 8 v and 16v sh!t these days. As kells said in hi thread his well maintained and cheerful 8v beat his mates 16v....second 16v he beat he said.
The other day, i was following a cooper S on the way home, and we got onto the dual (duel) carriageway and from 40-60 he was pulling away very slightly but from 60 to 100 which was the speed we got to at the end of the carriage way it was neck and neck, i was behind him but he wasnt pulling away, and i know he was going flat out...FACT, people jabber on about how 16v are the better replacements for the 8v, but some how my dad never bought one, he always had 8vs, (6 of them infact) and he was a VW specialist for many years and used to race cars and bikes.....so he must of had a dam good reason why he had 8v and not 16v, his response was 8v picked up quicker and where more rev happy, he used to race in the twisties not on the straights.

LOL, there is no way an 8v GTi would keep up with a Cooper S that was being driven hard, they are seriously nippy machines.  My old S40 T4 struggled to stay with one of them and that was way faster than my 8v.......

I love my 8v and think it's a great, cheap daily car with a nice torque curve but keeping up with a Cooper S that's flat out?  Sorry but that's funny!

How many times do I have to say it?

A 1.4 MK3 will trash ANY GTi. When on tow by a Bugatti Veyron

If we can't get along, then maybe the board should be split down further into MK3 8v and MK3 16v. Only kidding but that's how daft this sort of squabbling is!

This argument is getting really old.

I've already aired my opinion on Kells thread (why was it deleted btw?! ). The short of it is the valver has 35bhp & a sniff of torque over the 8v. That's fact. But at the end of the day, they're the same car. You're only going to notice any difference on the drag strip. On a road, private or otherwise they'll be nothing in it.

As for a MK3 keeping up with a 'flat out' Cooper S? I very much doubt it, it's a small engine but it goes (and handles!) far more than a weighty MK3!

The only argument really is the 16V engine looks more impressive! :afro:
