unlike most of you i never really had an interest in vws up until last april, i wanted a car that will be good for alot of motorway miles so bought a mk3 gti 8v and then started looking at pictures of mk2's. i like how comfortable the mk3 was but i missed driving something different so spent ages looking for a mk2 - checking ebay every 5 minutes and all the vw forums. eventually found one and love it, i havent noticed it getting much attention or turning many heads but i didnt buy it to show off so its cool. although i look like a miserable bastard most of the time im grinning from ear to ear whenever i jump in the mk2

Pretty much always had VWs both air and watercooled, so having a MKII GTi was inevitable at some point.  Main reason I purchased my current one was to reduce my monthly running costs and therefore use the 911 less.

Good handling, fun to drive, good MPG, easy to fix and run, depreciation proof, classic looks.  What else is there?

4 Polos
3 Golfs
1 Beetle
1 Karmann Ghia
1 Porsche 912
1 Porsche 924
1 Porsche 911

Its in the blood.

I recently got a Mark 2 GTi 8v. There are many reasons for me choosing this car really.

- When you say "I got a Golf GTi" most people instantly think of the mark 2. It has reputation!
- Was cheap
- Can get insured on it
- It's a Golf GTi. Just has that magic that other cars don't have. You don't get in it and think "it's a car", you get in it and think nothing, but just enjoy being there.

Moving over to Flickr, sorry for the broken picture links!

Liked them since I was a kid and can still remember the adverts of the vws dropping out of nowhere into the white room.
They just seem to have character and unlike alot of others vehicles from the time don't look too dated + the driving mechanics are pretty excellent! Even turned around the missus afetr she had a go and she hated "small" cars

why do we all love the mighty MK2?
good question
for me its got to be the looks, the fact that most jobs are diy, the support from you guys, easy to tune and hardly any electrics to go wrong!
what i dont like
the fact mines off the road rusting and full of water again
but i still look at her and think its the best looking car ever built
VW F**K THE MK7 BUILD MORE MK2S!

I love mk2 gti's, saw my uncles brand spanking new Atlas Grey 8v in 1986-87 and fell in love.
Then my Ma had a Tornado Red driver brand new in 91, sadly before I could drive.

Bought my first mk2 in '99 after passing my test, sold it a month ago for scrap as terminal tin worm
Then felt compelled to fill the void with another mk2, but a 16v in Oak Green this time.
It's a car I take for a drive with not particular destination, just for the sheer joy of driving it. Love it.

Daily driver, weekend warrior, completely classless, truly the peoples porsche...

Actually I'm off for a boost up the back roads right now people....

You don't own a Mk2, you support it.

I bought my first in '93 a 1989 8v in white purely by chance, was looking somehting a bit sporty and had my heart set on a Renault 5 GT Turbo (you don't see many of those these days).  Kept the '89 until I traded for another white 8v but of the '92 vintage, then I think I lost the way slightly and bought a Fiat.

Then three months ago bought my third Mk2 8v in white again (don't ask me why always white it just seems to happen) and feels just like it did all those years ago, like having a child always looking at it, you just can't park it walk away you have to keep turning around and having another look.

mk2s rock because they're cheap, good fun and easy to fix.

sharpie, I don't know if I've done the maths wrong.. But if a mk4 weights 1300kg and the Gti is 150bhp, does that not mean it's 115bhp/ton?

Whereas a 16v mk2 at 135bhp (950kg) would be 142bhp/ton?

Or even the 8v mk2 at 112bhp (950kg) would be 117bhp/ton.. which is more than the mk4 gti!

..or do I just suck at maths? :D

My love for mk2's probably started with my brother who said how much he loved them so I checked these "mk2 golfs" out and thought they were nice! Through some friends, I met two dub enthusiasts who both owned very nice mk2s! Through them, my passion for the car grew until I bought my first mk2 Driver out of the blue. I had just said to myself a week earlier that I wouldn't buy a new car for another year. A stupidly mint/low mileage mk2 came up in the area and I just had to have it!

Unfortunately I had to sell her last night due to University :( As soon as I get back from Uni I'll be on the hunt for a mk2 gti though! A lot of my friends don't understand why I'd want to drive a 16 year old car (despite it being far better condition/runs better/lower mileage than their 4 year old cars!) but they looks, feel, character, everything about them is perfect. It's so obvious why they've become a cult icon!
