only had mine for a week and i love it fancied something different (coming from a 1.2 w reg punto), fairly fast, relativel cheap 90's hot hatch, was never going to go down the whole saxo/corsa crap route so it was either a mk2 gti or an xr2i! and mk2 gti it was! even driving home it was incredibly loud, pretty bouncy bloody freezing cos the heater had packed in (i was wearing a hoody and a coat and i was still cold) yet i'm not ashamed to say i occasionally burst out laughing at the sheer fun of it! even when i park it now i glance back (more than once - yes im sad ) just to get one last look at it before i go inside! I'm actually excited about driving it home from uni next weekend just so i can getg it on some country roads rather than boring town/motorway stuff! and thats why i love it!!

i wanted a cheap little car to get me to work and back after i moved to Holland to live ,

thought about escort's as i have had loads but over in Europe they are a little rare , and i thought , fool it , I'm close to Germany and i always liked the MK2 GTi

so i started looking , found my Edition One , so we want to look at it and i fell for it (and all it's little quirks)

then i just looked forward , tuning , cleaning , and enjoying the drive of it ,

now it is broken down again with a really bad wiring problem , so I'm going to tear it all out and fit a VR6 and wiring looms

all it's little problems just add to the character

I owned a nice Mk4 1.8T and was pissed off with the VW dealer ripping me off all the time. I tried to sort out a few of the niggles myself via the internet, found this forum, found out how to fix the problems via this forum and got an extreme sense of satisfaction from fixing something myself (it was a job that cost me £40, but the dealer was going to charge £250 min).

This got me into thinking about DIY car maintenance as a whole and that it would be entirely feasible on an older, simpler car. Then I saw this photo, and was smitten:

My vw passion started about 7 years ago with my ex's 1l 1983 polo what a beast it cost me £130 and i couldnt believe how reliable and tidy it was for its price and age.
When i had passed my test i was lookin for a lupo sport but couldnt find any so stupidly i was enticed into buying a 206  :embarassed:
what a piece of s**t that turned out to be so back to the v dubs it was.
Found my beauty in the local paper £400 for an 86 atlas grey 3dr 8v gti with 86k on the clock couldnt believe my luck it was so cheap i wondered why? Turns out the lad didnt know much about them it was an absolute bargain. 

Since then ive never looked back. It never hurts spending money on her coz she is so worth it and always puts a smile on my face when i drive. The looks are stunning why dont they make good looking cars anymore? Its a bit sad but i always walk by the car park on my dinner to make sure she is ok and cant help but keep turning back to look at her till she is out of sight.

Sorry for the long post i could go on all day about how much i love mk2's mine inparticular

I think its something to do with the cars that were desirable when you were growing up.   I remember gazing at my first gti at the age of 18 for hours on end.  I'm on my fifth and I can still use a drive in it to cheer myself up.



They define the word charisma.


Thats not to say though, that they aren't a total pain in the ar$e and that one regularly feels like setting fire to the bloody things

It's the whole respect thing too. People tend to give way to you because they want to look at your car! I get so many other drivers looking at me, esp mk4 and mk5 owners. And the round headlight thing-people are used to seeing jelly mould headlights!! And, most importantly, the BIG smile factor, EVERY time you drive her! Oh, and cocking your inside back wheel on fast cornering....that's adrenalin rush right there!!!

Have not driven mine since buying it over a month ago ,but love coming home and seeing it on drive looks really nice , sits well and I have had lots of positive comments sinc owning it

I wanted a 90s hot hatch, narrowed it down to a mk2 gti, 205 gti or a clio 16v, got it down to a 205 and a golf, had a drive in both and fell in love with the way the golf felt

They are easy to work on, easy to get parts for, have a good following and it just makes me smile everytime i drive it or see it parked up, gets plenty of attention as well (especially when im out with my mate in his mk1!)

I walked past this mk2 everyday from school and always said ''i want that golf!''
I turned 18 and made the guy an offer and we had a deal. Still have it today (about 6+ years). Ill keep it for as long as possible.

Ive always loved the look of these motors.

You dont just buy an old golf. you buy the character. The worst bit is the attention in traffic.

Its more than just a car. The feel, the interior smell and the looks.
