i'd have guessed at a wheel bearing

does it get louder with car speed or engine revs ??

jack the corner up and spin the wheel

you'll hear it if it is the wheel bearing

ive remembered ive missed some other info. out
when i turn left the noise disapears but when i turn right it stays the same.
i would have said it to be the wheel bearing but ive just had a brand new one fitted on staurday and the noise seems exactly the same, maybe a little bit quieter

it is a left wheel bearing

if you turn left the weight of the car is off it so no noise

when you turn right the weight is on this the left side so noise :)

chect both front and rear as i have know noises to "travel" from front to rear LOL

check the discs, make sure there isn't a lip around the edge. this will cause a grinding noise

Is this rumbling noise complimented with a clicking noise too? Check the CV joint.

right an update.
definatly not wheel bearing, but it is related to the cv joint.
its the gearbox end joint, and there is abit of play in the joint. if this cures the problem ill informe you all

It's the other way round. The noise will stop when there is weight on it.

Hate to say this but sounds like the gearbox diff bearing. I had same problem last year and after eliminating wheel bearings and cv's found lot of play on the left (n/s) driveshaft. Recon gearbox £400 and clutch £150. 5 hours to fit, could have done with a ramp and ten inch long fingers!!
