I am sure that if it is driven reasonably sensible at times it would be possible to get high thirties mpg. <<<<< Never!!!
It's possible.  I once Drove a 103 Mile trip and got 38MPG overall.  I started off driving in very chilled out fashion because I was hungover, and it was a lovely day, but after 20 or 30 miles it turned into a quest for best possible fuel consumption.  Would have been better still if I hadn't got lost and spent half an hour driving around some tiny arse-end-of-nowhere villages near Salisbury.

Although that wasn't 'Reasonably sensible' driving, that was "pointless driving a VR6, may as well be in a 1 litre metro" driving.

So it is possible, just not particularly any fun.
Sold the VR6... Now officially An Old Man With A Passat Estate.  At least it's a 1.8T

The best I've managed to get the VR to do is 32....but then i'm happy with that

The mk2 8v does 36-37 all day long and 42 on a run

mfa position 2 shows 25.5 for 1927 miles

VR6 for the noise but 16v for the drive.  I loved my vr but it was a bit wallowy, but the 16v was a fairly old fashioned spank the pants out of it drive!! Neither of them was as good as any mk2 i have owned but if you want my opinion its the valver every time.

if you have the £ for petrol get the VR6.

I had to budget a lttle so went for the 16v but would lover a VR6 just for the hell of it.

Not much difference performance wise better noise from the VR though.

Gonna hangout with the wangout
