never been in either but from the stats, 2.8ltr giving out about 174bhp?! bit wimpish for all that engine..you all know you wana mk2 20vt...power to weight would eat any vr imo
I have a Mk3 VR6, which I'm now selling, because I've just bought a 1.8T 20V Passat Estate.

I know it's not 100% fair comparison because the passat weighs about 15 tons, but on paper its 150BHP Vs 174BHP, but in practice they're miles apart.

a single BHP figure at a single RPM figure means nothing whatsoever.  It's all about the torque curve - Its a nice gentle curve on the VR6, there's just loads of power all over the place, whereas the 1.8T you have to rev its nuts off to get at the power, it's more of a spike where the turbo kicks in.  Sure that spike can be made pretty damn high by increasing boost etc, but before Mr Turbo makes himself known you've still only got a 1.8 engine...  you don't "feel the power kick in" in a VR.  it's just there.  all the time.

I notice it all the time - in the VR I could happily drive up the hill to my house in 3rd gear even though it's only at ~1200RPM and the hill is pretty steep, but the passat can't cope at all, as there's just no power below 1500RPM or so...  I've got to leave it in 2nd at around 2500-3000RPM....

I really don't want to sell the golf to be honest, but I need something more practical, and can't afford to keep both.

I vote VR
Sold the VR6... Now officially An Old Man With A Passat Estate.  At least it's a 1.8T

16v

Ive never liked the VR6 due to the extra 60kgs over the front wheels it has.
Dont care it has more power, it is meaningless less to me if it cannot go around corners.

Straight out the factory the suspension set up was poor but you stick some good suspension on them and some good tyres and they will keep up with most things throgh the twisty stuff. At parking speeds you notice the weight quight a bit.

Must admit I find the steering on my Vr very light for parking considering the hefty engine far lighter than the mrs mk2 16v and gives good steering feedback at all speeds, handling is fine now its been lowered a bit I dont really notice the extra weight up front..

I have to vote for the VR6.
I remember my dad had one imported becuase at one stage they said they could not supply South Africa with them. And it was awesome. So much fun and that sound. It was sold over 6 years ago but I still remember that sound it made.

The Vr6 is the reason we bought my mom an MK5 GTi. She went from a Vr6 to a BMW 3 Series 320i and hated it. The gti brings back fond memories of the VR for her.

Viva la Vr6.
I want one. And a smart car  :embarassed:

VR6 when it comes to the mk3 and the highline at that for me, just try and resist 3rd and there is no way on this earth that a 16v will stay with the VR6 when it comes to roll on i.e. 50mph 3rd gear, no way imho

Manage 44mpg on my 8V and have heard that they tend to be more reliable than the 16V.  Not sure if the VR6 would have the same collectors appeal later but it must be great fun to drive. I am sure that if it is driven reasonably sensible at times it would be possible to get high thirties mpg
