never been in either but from the stats, 2.8ltr giving out about 174bhp?! bit wimpish for all that engine..you all know you wana mk2 20vt...power to weight would eat any vr imo
I have a Mk3 VR6, which I'm now selling, because I've just bought a 1.8T 20V Passat Estate.
I know it's not 100% fair comparison because the passat weighs about 15 tons, but on paper its 150BHP Vs 174BHP, but in practice they're miles apart.
a single BHP figure at a single RPM figure means nothing whatsoever. It's all about the torque curve - Its a nice gentle curve on the VR6, there's just loads of power all over the place, whereas the 1.8T you have to rev its nuts off to get at the power, it's more of a spike where the turbo kicks in. Sure that spike can be made pretty damn high by increasing boost etc, but before Mr Turbo makes himself known you've still only got a 1.8 engine... you don't "feel the power kick in" in a VR. it's just there. all the time.
I notice it all the time - in the VR I could happily drive up the hill to my house in 3rd gear even though it's only at ~1200RPM and the hill is pretty steep, but the passat can't cope at all, as there's just no power below 1500RPM or so... I've got to leave it in 2nd at around 2500-3000RPM....
I really don't want to sell the golf to be honest, but I need something more practical, and can't afford to keep both.

I vote VR
