Higher octane fuel is only any good for stopping highly strung turbo cars from detonating, it's like 'check your oil' posters at p/stations which could cause you to overfill your engine.
Oil company propaganda.

My 16v runs a lot smoother and quieter on high octane fuel, especially the 99ron stuff from Tesco but then this is due to it running a more advanced timing set up since it was remapped.

goes without saying the best mileage is smooth driving on the motorway.

recently drove 150 miles from London to Sherbourne averaging about 65mph and 2.0 8v was returning 45mpg. that was with me doris and a couple of heavy travel bags etc.

I've had pretty much bang on 50mpg out of it before but I nearly fell asleep in the process, you have to drive like an old nurse...

average i'd say 35-40 mpg but i also find that some fuels are different so that affects mileage - apparantly Tesco fuel for example has more 'crap' in it and less 'pure'...

Have to agree. 50mpg out of a Mk3 GTI is impossible. Unless you're in space were no force acts against you

It's not impossible when you're been pushed down hill by a Veyron.
