Title: Just bought a mk2 VR6 !!!
Post by: Cosworth Lee on 03 October 2008, 10:25
Hi everyone.

I bought a mint mk2 VR6 yesterday

Few things id like to ask, its running lumpy on idle. apart from maybe a vacum leak or a sensor issue is there anything else to look for as im not to familiar with the vr6 (more of a ford4pot turbo man usualy)

second the car is pretty much perfect, although there are a few changes id like to make, its missing the rear gti 16v badge, is there anyone who sells these new?

ive also noticed on some gti mag spreads on the interior the chrome stripe which runs the dash and into the door cards, is sometimes red. I think this looks really smart, but im not sure if this is a custom thing or a factory thing. as id like to do it but im trying to make the car as O.E as possible, well except for the obvious bit unfer the bonnet

Theres loads of things id like to know to get more familiar with the mk2, but im not picking the car up for a few days, and was so excited i cant rmember all the things i wanted to ask

I dont want to post any pics, as i feel the car is not officially mine untill its on my driveway. but i will do as soon as its home.

http://shop.ebay.co.uk/items/__volkswagen-golf-mk2?_nkw=volkswagen%20golf%20mk2&_dmpt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&_fln=1&_ssov=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m282&Type28035a=ExteriorSignsDecalsece0a7ec

I always type in "volkswagen golf mk2" and refine the search on the tool bar on the left hand side...

in this case "exterior signs and decals".

Not much on there at the moment but keep your mince pies peeled and a few crop up on a weekly basis

car sounds nice

This is where you want to start for badges:

http://www.trimsport.co.uk/badges.html

They aren't genuine but I've got a set of their silver side and rear badges gti/16v and the quality is very good.

Parp - there were VR6 24v's made and put into the mk3s. They are the 190bhp version iirc.

Oh and how can a mk2 16v be 2 valves per cylinder. Bloody know it all mk2 owners.  :lipsrsealed:

thanks guys, its the OBD2 engine, (which i think is 24v, the car comes with a spare head, so i'll count the valves when i get it home ), and its pushing around 200bhp, which really isnt that impressive. But that dont matter, its the sound that i bought it for!

As said no pics till its on my drive!

its an H plate 1990. with all the electrics and recaro interior, none of that ugly rainbow stuff !

the 49
I originally bought the shell, with the intent of putting it on a 70's chassis and having the subaru impretza turbo engine out back, or space frame it with a mid mounted V8. but i managed to track down the ORIGINAL chassis to the car in scotland, the 2 halves had been seperated for 27 years
So anyway it was only fair to the car to do it stock
(http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n271/leeivatt/49low.jpg)
Umm bare metal sandblast
(http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n271/leeivatt/7373.jpg)
Fully restored chassis, with CABLE brakes, full crash gear box
(http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n271/leeivatt/chas.jpg)
this was truly the hardest project ive ever done, literally having to find every nut and bolt for the car, is all i started with was the bare body and chassis pan! ANd it fcuking hard tracking down parts made 1949, they are RARE and not cheap. heres about 1/3 of the parts i collected, and if i tell you in this pic there is the best part of £2500-3000 in parts there! to give u an idea the interior light cost me just under £300 in unrestored condition!!!

the week i was about to spray it, someone offered my the best part of £10k for it (its worth £25k restored!) so i let it go like this

got a lot of stick from the mk5 boys on this forum, cos i wanted to put the gti bumper on as the gt sport is just plain ugly. Anyway i upset a few people, you know the purists, trying to say im just pretending ive got a gti. well no, ive got the diesel version, but i just want it to look good rather than the back end of a bus!! hehe, anyway, i dont post in the mk5 bit anymore, Gti or not its not really a big deal, just a car.

Im 25 mate. Money well not really

the 49 shell was £1500
chassis £600
then u just buy parts when u can afford them

the 1st orange bug was £500
2nd orange bug was £200

the mk1 escort was £600

series one i got for £600

so its more that im just very lucky, i always seem to be in the right palce at the right time. im always finding cars at stupidly cheap prices. which is probably my weakness, as i keep taknig on these poxy restorations, and im bloody sick of them.

thats why i bought this VR6, i looked into doing it my self, but after all the bloody cars ive fixed up i think ive now finially realised its better to spend a bit more and get something that is how u want in the 1st place.

If u look carefully at the pic of the S1 shell in its new paint, it was taken at my mums house, in the back round is my van.

I was at university for one year and i hated it, as you can see im a hands on guy not a bloody book worm!
So in the space of one week asked out a pretty girl (now my wife), left uni, bought the S1 and started up my own business. hence the van in the pic.

Money is not really the factor in life, its how look at things, and how you make them work for you to your best advantage.

i mean take the cossie, it wasnt even for sale, and i convinced the chap to sell it to me. even tho i was £4k short of the asking price. so the next 2 weeks i worked my arse off, and earnt the money. Thats how i live, if i want something, i go out and earn it.

"Mk5 owner" haha, yeh, i think a lot of them were offended and couldnt understand why id choose the gt sport over the gti. well because i think the gt sport is better as a daily driver! I suppose a lot of them have worked hard for their mk5 gti's and are proud of them, thats probably the difference here!

All the cars ive had i bought because i have a love, a passion for them, and not for materialistic values or to keep up with the "jonses"

"skills" :embarassed: dont be silly. im probably no more skilled than you. Cars are just nuts and bolts and common sence, i certainly dont have any skills.

Fair play mate, wasn't knocking it/you, sorry if it came across in that way. Was just being nosey to be honest!

No worries, this is part of the reason ive gone back to my roots and back to VW's as a hobby. the ford scene is so clicky and full of cocks. Such a shame as some of the RS cars are actually very pretty and very intresting "classics". just a shame about the yobo immage that goes with it.

THe vw scene is so more chilled, and more of a philosophy, rather than the ford "my cars quicker than yours, has cost more money, has more power"etc

thats why i bought this VR6, i looked into doing it my self, but after all the bloody cars ive fixed up i think ive now finially realised its better to spend a bit more and get something that is how u want in the 1st place.

Cars are just nuts and bolts and common sence, i certainly dont have any skills.

all i can say fiar play to you , you've put some hard work in and plenty of respect for that :)

my mate has a resoration S1 and it has taken him 8 years so far with weekends at ford fair , and other shows collecting mint part's , i love the escort cossie it is my dream car ( sorry VW boy's ) LOL

what is the plan's for the VR6 MK2 ???

Well if you want something go and get it, thats what i say. no such word as can't. Its calculated risks that all. its just most people dont take the risk!

Mate, if hes looking for any bits just let me know i have a shed full of bits, probably 1/2 and rs turbo still in there!
Also my best mate is selling her S1, and its just as clean as mine was!

PLANS FOR THE MK2

well dont have any as such.

The paint is near perfect, as you can see, my paint standards are high, i dont like crap paint!! there are a few small paint defects i will correct, both about the size of a 20p, and are just parking scratches.
but like i said thia was the clincher that made me get the car, cos its 100% rust free and great O.E paint!!

Engine im not sure, probably just run it as it is for a bit, get used to how it feels. i may do a rebuild, just for piece of mind. and at the very least put a new timing chain kit on
Im not really fussed about power, the cossie was 0-60 in around 5 secs, and to be honest its to quick.
the beauty of the vr6 is you can drive it to a track day, have a great time, and know that your gnna be able to drive it home again with out any problems!
It comes with a spare cylinder head and rocker cover, so i may play with these if i rebuild.

engine bay i plan to give a good clean up, maby polish the spare rocker cover. just smartem it up.

its got g60 brakes, and newish coilovers, so suspension wise its fine

i may change the exhaust, theres one i heard once with a 2.5" and it was beautiful.

interiors good, need to tidy head lining, maby change the wheel. the rev counter does not work, so maby i will install the mk3 vr6 clocks, to smarten it up a bit?

Want to put the gti 16v badge back on the rear, and maby change the grill to the single with the red stripe. it has no stripe at the mo, and to me the red stripe is what makes it a gti!

thats about it really, as i said i bought this one cos it don't need anything doing to it!

very nice motors you have I think you should rebuild the lump for piece of mind

I wish i did i bought a 2.9 engine last year with not alot of history
bottom end let go at vw festival after spending lots on the top end

year before that i had the 2.8lump in and it got the death rattle
no history with that once

now im having to strip the car again rebuilding the full thing
all uprated now though ready for a turbo doing it all right this time
not cutting corners

yeh, as said im gna just run it as it is for a bit, its my 4th car so is only gnna be used on the odd sunday.

im not after more power really, but would be nice to have a fresh reliable motor. the chains not noisey which is a good sign!

so what sort of price am i looking at for the parts to rebuild it, im not too familiar with these engines!

THe vw scene is so more chilled, and more of a philosophy, rather than the ford "my cars quicker than yours, has cost more money, has more power"etc

after i sold my RS500 i bought a RS Turbo S2 and people in north yorkshire RS owners club wouldn't talk to me cos i "only had an RS Turbo !!!!!"

Sorry but what was the first hot turbocharged prodution front wheel drive sucsess ?? i think it was the S1 RS Turbo

they are a bunch of tommy tankers and i will never join the RS owners club again !!

Absolutely love the Cosworth Lee.

The Escort Cosser I think is one of those "Must have a go in before you die" kinda cars.

It nearly killed me on many occassions

people laugh at the "ironing board" and the snow plough, but when ur on boost round a corner at 50mph, trust me u need it. Ford didnt spend millions desigining all that stuff to just look good. the es cos was one of the most sucessful rally cars ever!
the best thing about the car was a balance, and the 4 wheel drive, you could litterally throw it into any corner, and if it started to slid just put you foot down even more and it would just go round!!

Im actually quite happy now to only have 200bhp in the VR6, nice and useable and not stupidly quick, i must be getting old

wicked write up lee - welcome to the site :)

No worries, its nice to be able to share these things, and reminice, I often forget all the good and bad time ive had with my cars/hobby, its nice to relive it now and again!

Excellent! What a fanatastic read, love the motors all look great. Looking at your beetle (2nd one) and that seems pretty easy to take the shell of. What was state was the chassis in? Looks like a lovely job done on the restore.

yeh beetles are easy, well ive done 4 now, so maybe im bias, but they are basically a giant mechano set with a lawnmower engine in the back.

Well i sold the VR6 on friday, got back exactly what i paid for it . It was just too boring, not saying it was crap, but after a few months of having it it just lost its appeal (as do many of my cars )

THe beetle is now going up for sale also in a week or two, once i get a chance to MOT it.
