Title: Not good is it...?
Post by: TeddyKGB on 02 September 2008, 21:38
I mean, mods having a slanging match with members, then abusing their power by getting the final b!tchy comment in before locking the thread

Or when someone slightly "Disses" the edition 30.. the thread gets locked

Not that I've been involved in said threads, just what I've noticed recently

Just makes us mk5 owners look like immature wayne kerrs tbh :undecided:

I thought it was starting to get interesting!!!

Gotta be honest, 'Sharpie' does like to wind people up.........

....I agree about the poor standard of spelling and punctuation etc though

Pity about it getting locked - Severe warnings of having individual offending posts removed might have been a better solution. I wanted to weigh in with info about powder coating diamond-cut Monza II's.

The topic was going completely off track, hense why it was locked, sorry if you guys wanna slag each other off, then thats up to you, but as a moderator, i have too. i get slagged off for removing single posts, and Now i lock a thread because someone is taking the pi$$.

Not at all Phil, far from it in fact. Personally I'd just ignore the guy as he seems intent on winding people up for his own amusement!

Tis a fine line and a pain. I would edit his posts out if he persists but put a replacement comment saying why. You're doing a good job though Mcavity.

I'd second that Nick.

Keep up the good work Phil, I for one wouldn't fancy doing it!

....Yes, definitely do what Nick suggests. It can be tricky being a Moderator and very testing. I'm one on another forum but everyone there so far is always well behaved!

You'll never please all the people all of the time and it's not worth trying to.

Stick with it, Phil :afro:

ive had Pm's from other Moderators from other Mk's from this forum in the past few minutes telling me about what to expect. Seems to be he makes a habit of upsetting everyone .He's not doing himself any favours
Title: Re: Not good is it...?
Post by: wellzee on 02 September 2008, 22:38
No worries Phil, you did the right thing. Sometimes people have to realise that forums are open to everyone and their opinions. However, they are moderated to ensure that, especially on a site like this, things said actually have relevance to the topic of the forum itself (i.e. the Golf GTi). Someone's grammar therefore is frankly irrelevant, especially seeing as so many people type in a modern style shorthand these days anyway. The thread became pointless and unhelpful, and his grammar wasn't perfect anyway which makes the whole thing hypocritical anyway. Keep up the good work Phil.
Title: Re: Not good is it...?

....wellzee - I'd just like to add that sometimes when posts are extreme in their poor spelling and punctuation and use nothing but txt-speak, the possibly useful information simply cannot be understood. It's often just laziness and (hopefully!) rarely illiteracy.

Also, we must be allowed to meander slightly from topics for the odd moment or two, otherwise it would get very very dull and far too nerdy in my opinion. A forum needs healthy and amusing banter as well as dry information.

Joe if you are dyslexic there is no need to finish your sentence with that smiley. This one is more appropiate.  :smug:
It is a perfect example of why sharpie was misguided with his comment's. and why we all should just think a little bit before we dive in with both feet.  :embarassed:

im gona add to this since i was envolved with Joe...

the language in the thread from Joe and everyone was perfectly legible and didnt digress into 'txt speak' at all, i think we are missing the point here, basically Sharpie was just out to cause abit of friction which Phil dealt with case closed!! no need to harp on about punctuation or spelling, its a forum for godsake, not a dissertation.........

On a Mac, F12 brings up many converters including a dictionary, but Apple is American and so is the spelling. I have a large Oxford Dictionary in the kitchen/dining room.

That's the same build as mine RR. I find that one of the most useful features of Safari and isn't too obtrusive.

For Windows users such as Chuckles the Cat Safari (including this spell check on the fly function) is available as a free download from apple.com

TBH I have not driven one no, but the conotations of owning an SLK are enough to put me off. AMG is a diffrent matter, but for the money of one of them I can think of several others cars Id rather have.
Title: Re: Not good is it...?

I took a 280 out, and it felt a bit faster than the GTI (200) low down, but pulled a lot more at higher speeds.

I took the 350 out, and it was a LOT faster than the GTI, quite surprisingly so.

Now the AMG is crazy fast, it has soooo much torque.... but its damn expensive lol!

I was at the unveiling of the SLR in South Africa and they were unveiling the Smart car at the same time and I promise there were more people at the Smart car than the SLR.

Besides that.

The SLR although supercharged is terrible to drive unless its on a track and you are revving the hell out of it.

If it turns out that it will cost too much I will just smile and leave the car standard. I travel over 100km a day. So need a car with good economy.

I want one. And I will get one. They can easily be mapped to 130hp and with uprated injectors and a bit of tinkering you can get a lot of power out of them. They are also a lot safer than many of the cars here that have only just entered the market for similar prices new. Im going second hand.

It would have, its got more power than standard, weighs less and has a whacking great turbo on it. Its not all about how fast you can go.

Sigh....

Ohh I'd better go out and buy a GTR as its faster.. oh no wait, its Japanese, guzzles fuel and likey to get nicked while touring europe

Oh no, wait, I'd better waste some cash on modifying a standard car to the point the gearbox plays up and it becomes unreliable.

Not only will it be unreliable, I'll have a job to sell it on, the residual value will be a lot less and it will need constant replacement parts/tuning....

But hey, its faster lol.

You stick to your choice Mike, there's nothing wrong with Smart cars.

It wont be as fast as a modded ED30 though, just in case you wondered. Did you know they produce more power than Electricité de France.....

Not a rant TC, what gets "my goat"  is owners of highly modified ED30's going on about how they have beaten every standard, less power car on the planet.

If it was all about a "how high can you pee" competition, I'd go out and get a Subaru P1 (like a good friend of mine has) and modify it.

Then I'd post how I'd Mullah'd many an ED30....

Also not called for, I just asked if anyone knew where to go for a decent Merc forum. I dont have a choice, SWMBO want one and thats it. Instead, I have comments like that which is frankly tedious, one of the reasons I ignore the "what car have you beaten in your GTI". Other forums mock that type of thread, especially posts by modified ED30 owners. I now see their point.

....I agree with you NewGolf and, as you know only too well, my GTI ride is heavily modified. I haven't even looked in the "What car have you beat in your GTI?" sticky! I kinda know what I'd be reading and I find it pathetic quite honestly. If you were to take someone like the trainer Don Palmer, and many other such skilled drivers, he'd run circles around 95% of any of the drivers in this forum, as modified as much as you like and he in a stock one, probably a basic Golf not even a GTI!

Have fun, love your driving, drive fast WHEN conditions allow, and DON'T drive fast when conditions aren't appropriate - Above all, drive SAFELY!! and don't be an immature arsehole with a complex. What are you trying to prove?

^This isn't addressed to anyone in particular but just those who need to remap their brain.

In a friendly tone, so as not misconstrued.

Not at all Hurdy, mine was a tongue in cheek friendly, (but factual by the way) comment back to Mike, whos posts are always funny and interesting.

He was, by the way, referring to a standard GTI. (Which has a 0-62 in 6.9 seconds and a top speed of 145mph).

I was referring to the 350SLK, Which has a 0-62 in 5.4 seconds and a top speed of 155mph electronically restricted. Thats from the showroom, by the way, no additional parts added, and it will do this day in, day out. Hence, they ARE faster than a GTI, AND the ED30. By over a second 0-62.

Going further, an AMG 55 SLK has a 0-62 in 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 155mph again electronically restricted.

From memory, a STANDARD ED30 has a 0-62 in 6.6 seconds and a top speed of 151mph.

There was never any mention of "fishing", "pi$$ing" or "better than" as you mention it, intended or otherwise. You really shouldn't read things that aren't there

Of course a GTI would kill an SLK, the only one being a 200 Kompressor.

No one mentioned ED30 and their total road dominance, (Next i'll hear Audi have now dumped their V8 FSI from the R8 and just used a remapped ED30 ?? ) WE ALL KNOW THEY ARE FAST, move on it gets boring hearing about how they beat Lewis Hamilton on the way to Tesco's in his Ferrari etc...

I'm not going to comment any further as I'm finding "mines faster than yours" a little tedious.

Oh apart from

A Mercedes SLK  350 "Hairdressers" car, is faster than a standard ED30, even with the roof down MUHAHAHAHAHAHA...

Got to agree with you there new golf. The 350's are a brilliant car as are the SL's (i say this even after saying I would never ever buy one).  As for comparing them with a golf.. whats the point?? From what I have read he only came on for advise as to what he should get his missus..

The 350 all day long.. over any Golf!!! (appart from mine  )

Now lets try be constructive

Im affraid I disagree with deleting threads... if your not interested in the topic or feel it is straying off the point then simply dont read it! How much more simple could it be. This is a forum where users should feel free to post whatever they like.

I think the banter is what keeps the regulars coming back. All the information that anyone could ever require about the V is there if you want it. With newbies excluded many just can't be ar$ed to search for it! So why tailor a forum for people who come on and take just the info they need with out ever being helpful to others? MAKE THEM READ OUR CR4P!!

going slightly off topic is fine as long as the original question is answered but in some cases it goes so far off topic it becomes annoying

going slightly off topic is fine as long as the original question is answered but in some cases it goes so far off topic it becomes annoying

i'm all for a bit of banter too but if the information gets lost in the threads you put people off sticking around

....It's when the thread goes off topic for more than about 4 posts that it becomes irritating. Just as in face-to-face conversation, subjects will meander.

It's very much down to the Moderators to apply a happy balance and they should always remain calm and impartial and never take sides in an argument.

Anyway, who could possibly be annoyed by those such as her : -

....The "mkv gti-24bhp" thread is a perfect example of the lack of moderation which sometimes happens on this site.

There's a happy balance but if it gets too much I unsubscribe the thread and don't bother to read - In doing so, further possibly useful contribution is lost.

I have to disagree with you there Red, Hurdy deletes " inappropriate reply s" but doesn't make a song and dance about it iv'e spotted a couple lately, this imho works well instead of locking threads.
there is a huge variety of people on here ranging from people who want to know how a fuel pump work's to people wanting to turn there front end into Kit off Knight rider.Even if i started a thread surely it is not up to me how people answer it.
I am pretty sure over controlling thread's will turn people off more than thread's going off topic.

I think the banter is what keeps the regulars coming back. theAll the information that anyone could ever require about the V is re if you want it. With newbies excluded many just can't be ar$ed to search for it! So why tailor a forum for people who come on and take just the info they need with out ever being helpful to others? MAKE THEM READ OUR CR4P!!

imo

I could not agree more with all of the above, if the person who starts the  thread does not get what they are looking for all they have to do is bump it back up and say does anyone have a serious answer please.

In my humble opinion, yes a few people on here might not like the current direction, but just look how popular this place is lately and that tell's it's own story.
You can count on one hand the number of thread's were the OP did not get a helpful answer.
Just my 2 penneth worth.

My two pence worth:

Obv if someone asked a serious question asking for technical help or advice, since iv been a member at least, the question/topic is usually answered very well tbh. There are instances where threads diverge from the original topic and the "mkv gti-24bhp" thread is an example (contributed by myself I'll admit) where the chat goes off topic.

IMO unless someone is being completely out of order/rude/offensive i can't see a reason to restrict non related chat since it builds rapport between members! If all us Mk5 owners were in a room together we could have conversations with whoever we want and it wouldn't be a problem. I know i rarely leave the mk5 section because the people i know here aren't necessarily likely to see something I post in the nonsense section. Therefore sometimes using an unrelated thread to share humour and thoughts on other matters, although unrelated to the topic of the thread, i feel is important in fostering a forum where people can be open to debate anything and share our ideas.

I know someone could start their non-related conversation in the nonsense section and would be right to technically do so. However with all respect, its the MK5 owners opinions/banter/thoughts I like to read/see/converse with since thats where i spend most of my time and you are the people i know on here. Topic digression is a way of achieving this...obv within reason!

Don't know if that makes sense to others but hey...

....Like I said before - There's a happy balance - No-one wants over control but sometimes some control is a good thing.

Anyway, every Moderator knows that you can't please all of the people all of the time.

Okay guys and Gals, here's my take on being a moderator.

1. Say what you like, but don't blame me if it goes pear shaped and I have to clear it up.
2. Banter is part of what makes this section (and forums in general) more of a community and as long as the threads don't go off topic for too long, then I'll leave them open.
3. Personal digs - these can be misconstrued by newer members and so generally I will tend to delete, but longer term members having a bit of a dig at each other comes under number 2 and will remain active unless it drops into number 1.
4. Moderators don't have to remain neutral in any given thread - we are members too and entitled to our own opinions.
5. Inappropriate threads will be deleted (or moved if they fit another section)
6. New threads which could go into another section (like chat) can sometimes remain in the MKV section. The moderator can use his own discretion in these cases.
7. Moderating should remain as much in the background as possible and only noticeable to those directly affected where possible
8. Don't FCUK with the moderator - they ultimately win in the long term

Hope that clears it up from my end

I second you John. Well worded, and yes i take "no sh!t either" or god help you all.... lol

This forum in my opinion has quadruple'd in size since ive been a member from september 06. We should say its been a huge success to get the ammount of members joining and staying mainly, and all of us have played a part in its success in my opinion.

We should give a pat on the back to Jv for such a successful forumaswell. When this website was offline, we ALL missed it tremendously, and couldnt wait for normal service to be resumed.

Keep it going chaps, this place beats all others by a country mile, and lets try a keep it going as well as it has been.
