GTI engine is configured to run on 98RON I believe therefore you need fuels such as Shell V-Power, Tesco 99RON or BP Ultimate.
your GTI will run fine on 95 RON but the engine will retard the ingnition to suit and thereofre you will not have full power at your disposal.
is there any noticeable difference though in performance/power and mpg when using the standard and the elite?
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=58279.0
try and read this, Sean did a fuel run down just the other day.
The thing i don't understand, is why my fuel cap, and the manual say use 95RON when 98RON is widely reagrded as the suitable juice?
i'd go for shell, optimax is good for high performance cars. stops melting pistons (well on cossies anyway lol)

Not BP Ultimate, as it is only 97 RON! :nerd:

wasn't sure! I drive a diesel after all
cheeky git. thats what i meant,
even though the shell garage i go to still has the optimax logo on the pumps.
Do they still have the rubber tubes you drive over, and a bell rings in a wooden hut, and then a man appears in a brown dustcoat and flat cap, and fills it up for you . . . . .

He only asks Girlie as they are now called 'Independent Motor Vehicle Technician (ret'd)'. Some still keep aforementioned cap in their cars, along with the jacket....
Right back at you Sean!!!!

ps - you forgot to mention the ferrets

Sorry old fella - I couldn't resist!!
Actually the EVO review showed BP ultimate 97 in the golf GTi gave an increase of 15 bhp and XX torque (forgot sorry!) only marginally worse than tesco 99 but better than optimax,
I filled up other week with ultimate and am getting 3+ mpg better and definatley crisper throttle reponse, so the extra p / litre is not so bad considering your getting 30+ miles extra from a tank. ultimate 99.9p Leeds

Hmmmmm - don't suppose you have a linky to that? I'm always cautious of any "tests" done by magazines which clearly get their revenue from advertising. What about the fact that Optimax is obsolete! Unless you know that there was a "control" to the test, and the environmental conditions were identical, then any published review like that would be flawed.
blimey! thats cheap compared to Ultimate here!
either way I'd beat you all in a race cos you'll be stopping every 5 minutes to fill go! GO DIESEL
it was 107 last time i went to bp
think the test was done at the back end of 2005 / beginning of 2006 so before Optimax was made obsolete :nerd:
check out www.evo.co.uk and look for the test
shell v power (got it right then! bet ur checking after the optimax thing! lol) is 99.
something. i dont understand why theres such a big difference in it?
either way I'd beat you all in a race cos you'll be stopping every 5 minutes to fill go! GO DIESEL    :laugh:Nah, the only reason you'll stand a chance, is because we'll have to keep stopping to clear your soot from our windscreens!
I remeber in Evo when they tested the fuels they reckon that one of the most important things is that the fuel is fresh as it quickly deteriorates. Your best bet is therefore is use the busiest filling station you can find!

As much as I love my PD150 I'm still looking forward to going back to the responsivness of petrol. :embarassed: But you're right, I'll have to be stopping a whole lot more to fill up. Still at least I won't be sooting up TTs windscreen when I pass him.

And which particular windscreen might that be ?? :smug: :smug:
So have we come to some sort of agreement/conclusion as it which fuel is the best?
Alot of opinions so far with some people differing their opinions....
- BP Ultimate (is that RON98?)
- Shell V-Power (is that RON98?)
- Total Supreme Unleaded (is that RON98?)
- Tesco RON99
?
Unfortunetly, my local Tesco only does RON97 (which i had to put in yesterday).

so you will be back in 2 days creepy to fill up your R32 again, or it feels like it, mines the dam same, good for my clubcard points at tesco mind you :smug:
I filled up with £43.00 worth of Tesco's 99 this morning, but without a turbo I don't suppose it will make feck all difference, only too my wallet

Doesn't yours need the 98 brew, then? What does it say on the inside of the fuel filler flap?

VW brochure says 95 RON minimum, just like every other car in the range.
I would have thought GTI, ED30 and R32 would all be 98 RON to get the best out of them :undecided:
Aye me too. But it might just be a turbo or FSI thang - and CCs has neither! But on my fuel filler flap, if defo says 98 as the preferred, then something like 95 with reduced performance. I just wondered if CCs .:R32 said the same?

No my flaps say 95, and I thought the R32 had an FSi fuel system ?
mind you it is a lazy engine, I mean 250 from a 3.2 is hardly pushing the envelope

I too initially thought the 32 had FSI (VW stealers again!!!) - but have subsequently been told it definately does not. CC, look on your plastic engine cover - if it does have FSI, then those three letters will be adorned on the cover. Alternativley, remove the cover, and look for the injectors, and more importantly, the ultra high pressure FSI fuel pump. To id the pumps, look at the pics of the engine in my RS4 thread - there are two pumps, one for each bank, sitting on the red-tops, near the rear RS4 carbon cover.mind you it is a lazy engine, I mean 250 from a 3.2 is hardly pushing the envelope
I'll look tomorrow, starnge though as the fuel pumps kick in when I open the drivers door, just like the Gti, thought that was asign of FSi.

That'll just be the normal lift pump, mounted in the fuel tank, or it could even be the purge pump for the carbon canister.

The noise comes from upfront, so I suppose it's the latter.
No, the best fuel, now proven by two independent tests:
- Tesco 99 RON
A close run second would be:
- Shell V-Power 99 RON
Tesco 99 is the best and proven aswell over shell v-power.Your local tesco may only do 97 octane as most of the smaller tesco outlets only do that grade, if so , get the V-power but you will pay over the odds for it, (as long as tesco dont balls up like recently),

illyan, read teutonic Tamers thread in an earlier post my friend before singling me out
Please read the very start and useful link from Wantmygti
Steve, read this, from the archives.......... im not the only one, far far from it
-------Oh dear, that is a very "generalised" statement.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tesco 99 Super Unleaded is not "any old petrol", which the likes of Asda, Sainsburys and Morrisons use. The Tesco 99 is supplied by an independently audited company, Greenergy. It is the official fuel of the British Rally Championship. Furthermore, it has been PROVEN, in independent tests, to be considerably better than the now obsolete Shell Optimax, AND the current BP Ultimate.
I certainly wouldn't recommend anyone filling up with standard unleaded at Asda, and the like - but we are specifically talking about a high octane super unleaded - which the Mk5 GTI should use all the time!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
if you read the 1st 2 pages of this thread, you will see quite clearly im not the only one, and your comment about bp being better fuel, plz read again pages 1 and 2
Steve theres nowt wrong with tesco's 99 stuff, like i been saying, shells fuel is refined the same process as shell fuel,(again read the post prior) with their own additives which realistically dont make sh!te difference in performance and "care"of your engine.
SLEEP WELL

....Two very strong reasons to drive past Tesco stations without stopping. Not only is V-Power more consistent but has the additives. Each to their own though of course .
I'm really peee'd off that nowhere north of Yorkshire, and south of the Scottish borders has the fuel...
Clearly they must think we can only survive on the 97 octane stuff... BOOOOO!
They must think that nobody north of Yorkshire has cars that need the good stuff.... Shame be upon them!

Where did you get that one from?! Shell and BP Ultimate have been consistently rated as better in tests that I have read in Evo and Car Magazine... plus contributors to this forum have also consistently praised Shell V-Power and felt that it was much better than Tesco 99... the only exception it seems is you.
