Title: The Colour Thread
Post by: blueheaduk on 05 June 2013, 19:50
I figured with the number of people unsure which colour they want from their GTI that perhaps a gallery showcasing each in the flesh might be quite useful.

White: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZGr89PbT_g http://recombu.com/cars/reviews/volkswagen-golf-performance-pack-gti-review http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=254284.msg2333320#msg2333320
Carbon Grey: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiVtFcE74_s http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=255530.msg2344339#msg2344339 http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=255807.msg2347237#msg2347237
Tornado Red: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96fxpepWb7w http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=255807.msg2347237#msg2347237
(Deep Pearl) Black: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_OtHZmsjlEU  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgtfxziBbTs
Night Blue: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpbbcHC5e4c&feature=youtu.be  http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=254937.msg2339255#msg2339255, http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=255765.msg2346757#msg2346757
Silver: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=254937.msg2359152#msg2359152

Hope this is useful! If anyone finds any better examples post them below!

I think it looks nice from the rear Bill with the lights but your losing the striking features at the front with the darker colours

You make a good point.  Also supposedly I've seen night blue in person (on a standard mk7) and it didn't look great.  However, I strongly suspect the dealer was mistaken because it didn't look anything like any of the videos or photos of night blue.  Sometimes I wonder if they make up half the stuff they say...

Well just completed the test drive . The car was a standard trim 3 door in Night Blue with no extras.

Initial impression of the interior where mixed when compared to my current Scirocco. I would have to say the Scirocco feels of a solid and higher build quality than the GTI. The seats are top notch, I love the tartan but the carbon fibre around the dials and radio looked cheap IMHO. The smaller radio screen also didn't help create the luxury feel I was expecting it was very low resolution

How did the car drive? In one word its excellent no complaints on that front. There is a defiant performance improvement over my 2011 2.0 TSI and the car only had 400 miles on the clock. Ride quality was brilliant and more than comparable with my current motor running in normal ACC mode. I honestly think the ACC is a waste of money when I think how often I use it in my current car (just being honest).

Night Blue what can I say its not a head turner I doubt most people in the street would even know you are driving a GTI it just looks like a plain old Golf. I didn't even mange one head turn at the traffic lights. Not a good sign.

All in all im still happy with my purchase. My build weeks is still 26 so role on the end of July...

Mmmm... The 'Night Blue' just doesn't do it for me.  Don't get me wrong its a nice colour and probably ideal if you want your GTi/ GTD looking discrete. It does have an air of "Class" about it like a Saville Row suit, but definitely not "Racy" enough for me!!!

Have to agree, It makes the car look decidedly average from the front

If white was not an option it would be carbon or the blue as next best for me.

With regards ACC, this Version 2 actively manages the ride no matter the setting so think the only true comparison is a against a GTI without, opposed to 'normal' being compared to standard non ACC set up

By way that was a general comment on ACC and not review as would like to know difference between 2 MK 7 with and without

Bugger, I was hoping it wouldn't look as good from the front but it definitely does. Colour choice has been without a doubt my hardest decision and even now I'm not fully 100% behind what I've chosen.  :undecided: :undecided: :undecided:

This probably the main reason why I wanted to stay away from darker colours this time. You can spend ages washing it and taking care over it but notice every little imperfection.

That grey is a temptng colour, I didn't condier it as it wasn't on the configurator at my time of ordering. If I really wanted to change given my latest order bump i'm sure I could do it without affecting my order negatively. Best metallic shade IMO (2nd being DPB). I would have to go and see one in the flesh to be tempted to change, right next to a TR one.

Strange you should say that, i saw a GT in Tungsten today and it looked very very nice! I kind of wrote it off originally cos all the pics i'd seen it looked almost champagne but not in real life, i'm not changing mine from white now as it's sat at week 40 but it definatley made me think! :-\

Hi I just found this video on you tube, and I am sure this is Oryx White as opposed to Pure White.
I know that a lot of people believe that VW have used Oryx white at the motor shows, but I have never been convinced of that I always thought that the motor show cars were pure white.
This video shows the difference (I think), I like it and I'm glad as that is what I ordered, however I think the pure white and Carbon grey are awesome too.

I strongly suspet its limestone grey, but it could be tungsten silver?

I took this picture of a limestone grey mk7 GT the other day but it doesn't pop anywhere near as much as the ones I the above link. Tbh I don't think it suits the GTD/GTI at all.

There's a guy in my work who has a Limestone GT TDI.
Some days I look at it and really like it and other days I think it doesn't look anywhere near as good as Steel Grey (the days where my car is actually properly clean that is).

Carbon Grey will knock spots off it when it's clean.
But when it's dirty a grey is a grey whatever shade of grey it is.

Hi Iain

By all accounts the normal suspension set up on the GTI is not particularly harsh so you should be ok. The 19" Santiagos really are stunning and I'm sure have made a good choice
Title: Re: The Colour Thread
Post by: monkeyhanger on 03 July 2013, 13:16
Standard GTD set-up on 18s is miles better than 17s on a MK5 Golf GT TDI170 - been in both back to back between sunday and Monday, 19s will be a bit harder but not massively. If comfort over handling is top priority then maybe get ACC/DCC.

Ian, you won't regret getting them, even if the the ride will be a little firmer. Always loved them, but not enough to part with £965 big ones.

Much prefer the Steel/United - now how does the latter compare to the Carbon? Hard to judge if they are not in the same photo but it looks to me like the Steel/United is a more neutral and slightly lighter grey, the Carbon has slight bluish overtone. Anyone?

I have wasted too much off my younger life cleaning, buffing and polishing dark coloured cars that show dust and dirt, so I've ordered Reflex Silver. White was a consideration, but my other car is that colour and it shows the dirt more than silver cars I have owned in the past.

Maybe I'm too old for a GTi?

I've always steered clear of silver cars; if you're unfortunate enough to need any bodywork repairs, I've been told by a couple of people in the car body repair trade that it's one of the most difficult colours to get a good colour match

I'm pretty anal and OCD about the appearance of my car, and I wouldn't be able to live with a 2-tone paint job. I must admit though that silver is one of the easiest colours to maintain, and shows the dirt much less than dark colours.

Has anyone actually seen Tungsten in the flesh? I'm curious to know if it's got a gold / beige sheen to it or if it's a pure silver, although slightly darker than Reflex.

Wouldn't order any colour without seeing it first hand, but just interested...

Have you ever had a really deep stone chip that's taken the bodywork back to the cathodic coating? It's like that kind of creamy/putty colour, but with a metallic sheen. Not for me!

Audi do it for UK orders (at quite a price) but VW don't seem to. Look on VW's germany website to see the range of colours you can choose from for a whopping 1800 Euros if you are a German customer. You never know, it may be one of those things that is possible if the dealer looks far enough into it (doubtful though).

They make the Golf bodyshell at Wolsburg, apply all the protective coatings and then ship it to the plant that routinely uses the colour you want. The car and all colour coded components are painted there and it is shipped back to Wolfsburg for final assembly. That process of inserting a "foreign" car into their paintshop schedule and the shipping each way to Wolfsburg obviously costs VW a good few hundred quid, hence they charge 1800 Euros for it!

My dad is regretting his DBP choice (of picking up an order change mistake early as opposed to picking up the reorder in October) - it's twitful to keep clean. When it is immaculate it looks amazing, when it is not immaculate it doesn't look half as good. I would say the gloss black will be even worse for this as it doesn't have sparkly bits to break up teh very glossy surface. Have a Black or Carbon Grey or Night blue Golf and be prepared to wash it a lot!

Although it's orange in the pictures, the details below the pictures state that it's deep black pearlescent, so maybe it's been vinyl wrapped. From the pictures, it does look like a matt finish, which would seem to confirm it's been wrapped.

Yup, black will look stunning when washed and properly dried, but will soon lose its beauty.  Even the act of washing a black car is a bind compared to, say, white or silver.  I've had one black car in my life, and unless I win the lottery and can afford to employ somebody to look after my cars, I'll never have another one!

I've had my CSG for a couple of weeks now. It's been raining, driven it quite a bit, spent 3 days in an airport open car park and I haven't had  a chance to wash it. Still looks very smart. I don't think it will that bad to keep loooking good.

I find my CSG mk6 soooooo much easier to keep looking good than my previous mk4 and mk5 Golfs, both of which were Deep Black Pearlescent. In my experience, CSG doesn't show the dirt nearly as much as DBP.

I've never regretted getting CSG, and it would be one of the 2 colours I would have on my shortlist I if I was considering ordering a mk7 GTI or GTD (other choice would be Pure White).

So how close is CSG to the old Atlas Grey of the Mk2?
Looks fairly close to me. Reason I ask it that I like the look of CSG in pictures, but never liked my Atlas Grey...

If the picture of your mk2 GTI is a fairly good representation of Atlas Grey, then I'd say that Carbon Grey and Atlas Grey are quite different. I always think that Carbon Grey has a slight green tint to it, which becomes more obvious in bright light. Video clips below are a fairly good representation of Carbon Grey; the 2nd clip showing what it looks like in bright, sunny conditions.

I really like Carbon Grey, but then I am biased (see signature!)

Oops, sorry! Off topic, but that mk2 GTI looks pretty tidy. Never had a mk2 GTI and always wanted one, so would have been more than happy to have had one in Atlas Grey.

Steel Grey is more like Atlas than Carbon mate, my mk6 is steel grey.

Got the week off work so was bored this morning and decided to go down the VW dealer to have a nosey as I have a GTD on order (with different dealer) and havent seen a GTI/D in the flesh yet.......

They had a 3DR CSG non-PP Manual pre-release (no ADC) GTI as a demo car and thought it would be rude not to take her for a spin.

The car was pretty dirty (dealer was very apologetic and said it hadn't been washed in a while and the manager had it out all last week).

All I can say is WOW!!!!

CSG looked amazing even though the car was pretty filthy (pics below).

I've never driven a 'performance' car before (apart from a 2 hour blast in a Ferrari 360 2 weeks ago which is a story for another day) and have had 3 Diesel Golfs in my years driving to date. The sound from the engine/exhaust from 4k revs and above is just addictive. The power is superb.

I got a 20 mins blast of back roads and dual carriage ways with the dealer in the back (and holding on during some of the squirts of acceleration and flying round corners I did lol).

Manual box is the usual VW supreme (by usual I don't mean run of the mill in any way - I drive a lot of manual hire cars and think the VW gearbox is best by far).

My order is still staying GTD though for a few reasons:
- I don't like the standard 18" Alloys and if I were to go for the 19's I think I'd have to add ACC (adding £1800)
- I don't like the red Jacara (I do like the grey in the GTD) so would opt for leather (adding another £1800 or so). Honestly though I could probably live with it and get to love it.
- I have an unconfirmed build week of 38 and don't want to upset it!

The main reason I would change to a GTI though is the power and noise of the thing but I dont think I'd get to use the power as much as I'd like to justify.

Was surprised that there was only about £150 price difference in insurance between the GTI with PP and GTD.

Dealer told me if I ordered today it would be a Feb delivery.

Insurance is a strange thing - the standard GTI is actually £15 a year less insurance for me than the GTD, PP is £5 a year less.

That is one filthy demo - they should be doing all they can to display the car at it's best.

I just got a quote for my new GTI to get an idea of what to expect, and it is less than what I'm paying now - more great news on top of my car going into transit!

The GTI demonstrator near me is in CSG too, it's a nice colour, but not one I'd opt for.  Gotta' say though, the night blue shown previously looks nice in that picture, but again, not a colour I'd want to own.

In fairiness it was 1st thing on a Monday morning and the manager had it out all last week. Dealer was very apologetic about the state of it and I'm sure it was straight into the wash bay once I was gone!

Just had a look on the VW used car website - Citygate Colindale have a 3 door manual in Night Blue,£25000 exactly,
-not sure if it's the sunlight, but must admit it looks quite tasty even though it wouldn't be my first choice.

It's one of those colours that looks great 10% of the time and not so great 90% of the time. On a really sunny day it can look amazing.
