Title: Test Drive with Pics
Post by: CraigW on 24 May 2013, 16:06
Well guys just had an unexpected test drive in a GTI and thought I would share my thoughts

Appearence

The car I drove was a three door manual in flat white and can safely say it was absolutely stunning looking. The white just sets of the grill at the front superbly and maybe i'm biased but the 3 door looked sleek and quite aggressive. The car had the standard 18" alloys which were really nice and the chrome pipes along with the diffuser at the back looked very cool  The wrap around smoked lights at the back are very very nice

Interior
The cloth seats can only be described as brilliant. They really hold you in position and are of a really nice quality. The driving position is really good. The whole interior just oozes quality. The car had the 5.8" sat nav fitted which was absolutely fine. The back is very spacious and when the back seats are folded down the boot is huge. Overall very impressed.

Driving
Unfortunately my dealership is in a really built up area so didn't get a chance to fully floor it but when you put the foot down the acceleration/torque was awesome !!! (this was without the perf pack). The gear changes were really smooth and the suspension in comfort mode was great, hardly any roll going round the bends.

Verdict
As you can tell by the gushing report I was very very impressed and am so glad I took the leap and ordered one without seeing it. I have specced quite a few options on mine but to be honest the vanilla car was all anyone would ever need.

Your definitely not going to be dissappointed guys!

Enjoy the pics

Good to see we get real time reviews now though there is some feeling of self harm haha, in reading them and seeing the photos as the day to own is so damn far away still!

Note the heated and cloth again so think ends that debate :)

I like the 3 door too, great lines! But practicality and fact think this model holds the 5 door lines pretty well has me comfortable still in going the 5 door way - Reason went for white, as think accenctuates so much of car features also.

You said in 'comfort mode' so did it have ACC then?

So all in all, jealous you had pleasure today !!

Brilliant! Mine will look pretty much exactly like that. Love it.

The "GTI" start up logo on the radio is a nice touch.

The same as mine will be (but I've got Performance Pack), looks amazing in 3dr White though I may be biased.

Thanks for posting the pics man

Mmmm, nice.  Thanks for the pics!

How nice to see that the clock now displays the date.  That always seemed like an odd omission in the Mark 6.

Great first impressions Craig. Love the pics!!! "Pure White" looks so much whiter than "Candy White".

How was the engine note? Any different to the Mk6?

Anything you disliked? Any problems with the stop start or electronic handbrake for example?

Hey thanks for uploading the pics. Shame its only a GTI

Wonder if the GTD will get its own logo in the start up screen? Hope so

Just loving the 3 door and in Pure White at last! Every other picture has shown it in Oryx White.

Whaaat!!!!

So that's Dunlops, Continentals, Pirelli's & now Bridgestones that we've seen????

You would have thought they would have a standardised tyre???? They must put on whatever is available at the time?

Looks absolutely stunning and i'm sure it looks even better in the flesh

Best colour and the right number of doors imo.

Thanks for the pics, helps ease the long wait.

I reckons they've got a huge pile of them out back with a giant plunger mixing them up so no car is ever the same .

Unique selling point that is.

Also had a test drive today in a Midnight Blue three door manual with ACC.

Inside I thought the area around the ashtray was a bit tacky, there was already a deep score on the plastic lid

The car was fitted with the 5.8" sat nav, the screen look a bit low res, not as crisp as the RNS510 so maybe the 8" screen would be better.
The rest of the interior was very nice and much the same quality as the MK6.

No performance pack fitted either but I did get a good run in the car and the performance was excellent.
The engine note sounded louder and better than my MK6, not sure if they are feeding false sounds into the speakers.

Handling wise the car seemed a lot lighter and sharper, the steering feel was nice but the steering wheel is definitely not a patch on the MK6. The various suspension settings are excellent. Putting it in comfort on a very bouncy road really made for a smooth ride.

Still not sure on the looks, especially that red line under the lights which I think looks a bit cheap, maybe it would look better on a white, red or black car.

I am not thinking of changing for a year or so but it will definitely be in my top three.

Cheers for the pictures im glad to see the car does not look dramatically different to the MK6, I was starting to worry I wouldn't like the look of the car as much as my MK6

Did any of the cars have reverse cameras?  If so how how did it look with 5.8" screen?

Look like bridgestone tyres too.

Squinting a bit, Potenza S0001.  Looking at the tyre ratings on Blackcircles, they look noisy (73dB) and don't have great fuel consumption (rating "E").

The more I see the Mark 7 in white, the more I like it.

Hi guys

Glad you like the pics

To answer a few questions

The exhaust note didn't sound particularly loud to me however I didn't really get a chance to get the foot down. The electronic handbrake will certainly take some getting used to however I actually really liked it, the brake just automatically comes on at stop which is really cool. The tyres were bridgestones as some have pointed out.

The car did have a cigarette lighter which didn't look great but I'm guessing the car had the smokers pack as an option. The resolution on the screen looked fine to me to be honest.

The flat white was really cracking. I've been swaying between white and DPB but that made my mind up.

Again I really liked the red line going into the headlight. IMO it's a nice feature.

I really don't have a bad word to say about it, maybe the exhaust note could have been a bit more throaty but first impressions are very very good.

I hope some of you guys get a test drive soon to gauge other opinions.

Sorry no reversing camera on the one I tested dippy and to answer Gung-ho, no major problems pal. The only thing was at one point when I stopped at lights I thought the car had cut out with the stop/start however it hadn't, it was just so quiet. The stop/start might take a bit of getting used to ad well

Argh. That looks amazing, so glad I changed my order back to a three door now! I've gone with the girly pearl white though, if only just to get a little sparkle in the white. Can't wait to get mine but don't think I'll see it until late September. Still, the wait will be worth it!!

I need to pop to Silverlink VW to get my service book stamped up for a service I had recently and forgot to bring the book along

Could be a good excuse to see if they have one in (maybe not if Scotswood Road have one).

They didn't have one yesterday.  (I went hunting).
When the mark 6 came out silverlink had one and scotswood didnt, so perhaps they only get one for the franchise.

I was really impressed - Looks stunning from the outside and in.  I had concerns about the 5.8" media screen being to small but in use it's fine.

As the inside pics show it is a bit of dust magnet which may be a problem for some of our OCD brethren.

Roll on Sept or Oct! (or will it be Nov? )

McMaddy: Silverlink has one and it was in today. Shadow blue. I went for a look and as I pulled into the dealership it was just coming back from the sales manager having taken someone out (he was driving, not the customer). He got out and was back in the dealership by the time I had parked up and walked around. Had a good look at it (around it and through the window at the interior). The salesmanager came out and asked if I was interested in ordering one, or had I already. Then he recognised me as the person who'd been in, got short shrift after asking for a discount and getting a poor p/x price offered for the Roc, then coming back days later for the Roc service and telling him 2 had been ordered elsewhere. He told me that as I wasn't buying from Benfield he wasn't prepared to let me sit in it. I said that I was a Benfield customer as i'd previously bought 3 cars from them and I still chose to take my warranty work and servicing there for convenience. "that's aftersales" he sneered, and walked back in the showroom, what a complete twit.

Anyway, all looked good from what I saw except wor lass wasn't impressed with the red/white/grey tartan. "looks a bit mulberry charva that does, is yours coming like that?". I then proceeded to explain that GTI and GTD come in the pattern except for the GTD there is a shade of grey where the red aspects of the GTI interior are. She could see that I wasn't impressed with the comment and said "well the grey will look better than the red" in her attempt at appeasement.

I might drive a little further for my services and warranty work in the future. They must have people going in there and accepting low p/x as well as no discount routinely....mugs!

For anyone in the Tyneside area wanting to pop by, the GTI was being parked in the parking bays just outside the glass doors into the showroom that face the used car lot (around the corner on the right of the main building as you face the front doors).

Yes, i'm a Pulman convert after Benfield tried to shaft me on the last car. I always go to Benfield first to see what the bottom line is for p/x and discounts and then get Pulman to beat it, which they do without issue and usually by quite a margin. If it wasn't so far out of my way to get servicing and warranty work done, i'd have it all done by Pulman. They also sponsor NUFC too

If I lived near I would go down there, play him along for a test drive then explain I like the car and will be ordering one, but not from him as he has a poor reputation, and leave.  Teach him a lesson about customer service.  But I don't live near.

Sales manager sounds like a real Banker!

Btw, I showed the interior pics to a girl at work and she said "No way, you can't get that interior. You have to get leather!". She laughed at it! I thought about it for a bit then realised she's only 20 years old lol. What does she know about GTI's.

Regarding Benfield I booked a test drive online to drive the new golf 1.4 .Arrived at showroom at appointed time to be told salesman had taken it home and was on his day off ! I was driven to salesman's house at Gosforth, distance about 10 miles to swap the car we were in so I could drive the Golf 1.4 back to Benfield.
At least i got a good long test drive but surely not good customer service.

And yet they remain open. Plenty of people prepared to put up with that level of service in Tyne and Wear. Silverlink was no better when Colebrook and Burgess had it (aka Cock-up and bodge-it) before they acquired all the Audi business in Newcastle.

http://www.judgeservice.com/car-dealership-reviews/group/benfield-motor-group

That website is full of very bad or very good reviews. Many of the very good reviews read nigh on identical, as if the same people wrote them.

I really don't know why I give them any warranty or service work - convenience I guess. When my MK5 GT Golf with 16" Hockenheims showed the dreaded "white worm" cosmetic corrosion they would not replace. They blamed stone chips or kerbing for compromising the lacquer layer. I asked them to show me any damage to my wheels that they had described as causes and they could not show me any. I also showed them numerous examples of the same issue on their used car lot and still they wouldn't budge. Pulman (my first contact with them at the time) said straight away it was a common issue and replaced them as soon as the ordered replacements were in.

They ruined my MK5 GT Sport 170TDI following massively shoddy repair work on a number of aspects including leaving the car with an unsafe brake fault and then lied about it (loose caliper refit, 3 different people working there told me 3 different causes), things taken from the car and not returned as well as a filthy interior. All this on a car that was 2 weeks old with 405 miles on the clock.

And yet I still go to them - I must need my head read!

It's personal preference, you say 'pure class and iconic', I say 'cloth seats'...

Admittedly I've leather in my MK5... which is of reasonable quality, certainly beyond that of the plastic of the dash and door inserts. But on the MK7 the interior component quality is outstanding, and so is the quality of the leather used. I sat in a GT in the showroom with leather when I ordered my GTI, I couldn't believe I was sitting in a Golf... there's not a chance that I would have gone with cloth seats given the quality of finish in the rest of the interior.

If you're 100% hell bent on the 'iconic Tartan tradition' then of course go for the standard seats.

But if you escape that bracket, see them for what they are 'standard fit cloth seats'...

There was also a guy there looking at it after just placing an order for a GTD

Wasn't approached by anyone while looking & was just in a quick look while on route somewhere so wouldn't of had time sadly if was offered... maybe next time.

Thought the seats were great and liked the wee touch having the red led ambient lighting in the trim on the door, looked cool.

I thought the standard screen was great and I have google maps on my phone so couldn't really justify the near £2k for the nav pro system.

One thing I did notice though was while the interior lights (reading/map etc) were LED, the vanity lights for the sun visor mirrors were normal halogen?

Hi Croz, it was me that met you yesterday, thanks for posting the pics, was gonna do the same but you beat me to it. The ACC sensor is missing off the front because this is not a full production model (showroom purposes only) it will return to have the sensor fitted at a later date & be sold as a demonstrator. Glad I changed mine from Tornado red to Pure white now. As someone said earlier, it shows the subtle lines down the side off better in white. The LED lights look great and the touch screen media system is superb. With both doors open it is a beast................be sure to park as far away from anyone else as possible people.!!

You know, every time I see the white, I lust. However, I have ordered the red and everyone else seems to be ordering white. I don't think I can justify the extra for what should be a standard colour, the car is now ordered and I don't want it put back any more. I've just done some data crunching on the ordered thread and here are the results: 22 Pure White, 7 Tornado Red, 7 Carbon SG, 3 Blue, 3 Black Pearl, 1 Silver. However, white looks good in the sunshine, red looks good in overcast conditions. Guess which we get more of? Red also looks good if you are a keen waxer and detailer, which I am, so I think I'll stick with the Tornado Red!

Just a note... I had just cleaned my Candy White MkVI and my friend pulled his Tornado Red Up! onto the drive beside my car in the very warm, bright sunshine. The white sparkled and the red looked kind of lacklustre. Then the clouds came over and the red popped. Strange but true!

The interior looks lovely. I would probably have stumped up the £700 or so more for the alcantara/leather/tartan seats, but seeing more pictures of the cloth, I think that probably isn't worth it as the cloth is lovely.

This Tornado Red was in MK today - Colour looked a little flat in the light at the time but I was always going white anyway, so just an observation.

But a lovely car no doubt :)

Sat in an R Line leather also while there and truly liked the cloth seats more and think they both supported better from first impressions than my S Line Half leather which however are still pretty good.

One thing I feel happy on too, is choosing the 5 door. The R Line was a 5 Door and lines looks good and obviously easy to get in with loads of room back there .. Seemed much tighter to get in back of the 3 door than my present A3 which always brings a series of moans from whoever is attempting.

An off the cuff post where think everyone knows what meant :) but you are right it was MK6 Golf R - For my own purposes wanted to check leather seats against cloth and access of 3 door opposed to 5 door thinking there be not be too much difference in these aspects between models (to many here these are well known details but this is my first Golf so checking all aspects)

The Tornado Red GTi was out the back and had a good level of dust on wheels so imagine not long been delivered and was not in direct public view so imagine still to get the showroom treatment.

Glad to hear they're not launching the R Line over here (yet). That body kit, alloys and badging should remain exclusive to the R itself.

They just had, or are in final stages of a refit at MK and there were 2 x Golf R second hand for sale in showroom - And very nice they were, would be very happy with either :) One had a £29k sticker on it but as was there looking at GTi was not taking too much notice of the details of these.

There was 2 cars with covers on at back roped off, probably for unveiling - New Polo?

I was in Glasgow today so couldn't resist taking a detour to the dealer at Crow Road to see the white GTI from the start of this thread.   It looked incredible and every bit as good as I hoped.

White isn't my thing but it really looked great in that colour.  I loved the inferior quality, the seats were really comfortable and it's a small thing but the colour MFD is a neat touch.

Only problem is I want my GTD now!

It is cracking looking. My entire family have been round to look at it and have a sit in it

All the time I was climbing in and out and poking about it nobody from the dealer came near me.  They must be getting used to folk just popping in to see it.

I noticed they had a Golf R cabrio in the showroom too.  That's a heck of a lot of money for less power than the normal R and no four wheel drive.

Yes the colour MFD is impressive.  Its completely integrated with the Nav system which I love, so you can control everything and view everything with the steering wheel and the MFD.

So much for needing that 8" nav screen eh?!

I've been in three times now. I think they are sick of the sight of me. It's been the same young salesman/helper who has been chatting to me about it every time i go in. The guy also said that they had to bring it back indoors because they had a quite a few youngsters looking to view it/test drive it without any real intention to buy (the rights or wrongs of this are debateable).

In terms of the R Cabrio you would have to be literally insane to buy one

Hmm... well, I don't feel 100% comfortable myself.  I've already placed an order at another dealer.  Perhaps I should have asked my local to beat the offer first but I didnt so when I'm talking to them they assume I'm a prospective serious buyer.  Yes I am, but not from them!  So in that light I'm asking for a test drive knowing I'm then going to have to make up an excuse why I'm not interested afterwards...

Obviously having a test drive doesn't oblige me to buy, for all they know I'm deciding between this and a ST and the ST wins, yet I still feel guilty about it.  :embarrassed:

The standard Discover Nav screen is too small in my opinion. RNS has a bigger screen. Pleased i went for the full 8"

Yes the 8 inch one looked wonderful.  So pleased the demo car had it!

My current TomTom is something like 4.3", and my current GTI has nothing of the sort!  So, a built-in 5.8" screen is more than large enough for my needs.  Even taking into account the extras that come with the Pro Nav, there's no way I could justify an extra grand on top...that's just crazy, but then so is spending what I'm spending on a Golf anyway!

Think we would all 'like' the 8" Sat Nav, looks great! But at a £1000 more, £ I spent on ACC with change :)

My present Sat Nav is smaller than the 5.8" and will I am sure be fine and to just have integrated is my leap of joy right there. - Know the Pro gives a little more than screen size but doubt would use any of them and the 2nd SD card will have plenty of room spare even with my entire music collection on it.

Overall they way overpriced full stop with the Pro being more acceptable at Discover price and Discover half its present price - But it is what it is and if want you have to pay the VW man ;)

Most of the the tech on GTi/GTD is standard so option choosing was made really easy - Speccing the Audi was having me compromise across the board and particularly on engine but now I have the must haves of DSG 5 Door and Engine and pretty much every payable option on Audi as standard :)

I'm pretty sure for you guys with the 5.8 it still integrates all the same functionality with the MFD.  So your just missing out on the Nav size and resolution, not too bad really.

I'm still really pleased I got the Pro though.  I've shoved all bank balance related brain activity into a folder marked "not to worry about until the future" and dumped it in some deep dark recess of my mind.

Its the only way to get through the day, no matter what I'm spending money on, car or groceries!  Everything is overpriced it seems.

Exactly the way I was when I bought my TT. To be able to get in the car I could only afford the basic model with no extras. Fortunately this time I'm in a position where I can add a few toys

I'm looking forward to the fact that it's also a DVD player so when I get kicked out the house I have something to watch. Does anyone know will you be able to watch music videos on the system, e.g. ones that you have downloaded from ITunes?

It should play video content from the SD cards, not sure about an ipod/phone though?

The car was going to get was 5 Door A3 S Line Sport Back STronic with either 150BHP or the 1.4 ACT engines with Sat Nav Interior lighting Pack Comfort Pack a nice car no doubt but when saw the MK7 reviews and all the standard options I was stolen away! - I could have afforded the basic manual GTi but the GTD with lower C02 enabled me to add the final touches and give me performance/economy balance I have now - Also as faithful as been to Audi, just going to be nice to drive something different so cannot wait :)

Awesome it is.  The pro nav in the vid 3 down from on the side looks in another league though!

It should do when it cost more than my laptop, games console, and AV amp all combined!  Value for money it aint', but agree it's a nice thing to have!
