Title: Landrover 90- new engine time!
Post by: shepgti on 26 May 2012, 11:36
well thought i would start a thread for my new toy as it may interest some, was an impulse buy as it came up for sale a few doors down and was pretty cheap.

Landrover 90 2.5 TD

runs and drives great but needs work on the rear crossmember and a small patch in the batter tray.

possible 200tdi conversion may occur at some point

quick snap

My boss has put a 4.6 V8 in his with Edelbroch carb's and manifolds, goes like a rocket and sounds feckin awesome!
These things are so easy to Mod with loads of room for upgrades either under the bonnet or underneath.

I would love a Landy they are super cool

The 3.5 that came out got about 10/15mpg, the 4.6 gets 15+
He is going to put the EFI on from the Rangey that donated the engine, so should see a few more mpg's

The paint is way past saving trust me!

Along with the rear cross member, probably one or two of the outriggers, the engine before too long and almost inevitably the sh*tty LT77 gearbox.

Will not end well, or cheaply.

Chassis is surprisingly solid. The engines are cheap to fix, don't fancy breaking the box though. Give it a couple if months and it will put jap crap to shame ;)

Perfect way to spend the long bank holiday weekend

I drove my mates old 110 County once, it was a V8 monster, cool though. It blew the head gasket though which meant it was laid up for a couple of months before it got a replacement engine from a Rangey. Sadly he sold it, but it was a hoot to drive around.

Good luck with the refurb.

f**k me that was shot.

Love working on my dads custom 100" defender...

Just recently cleaned, sanded/brushed, rust etche primered, then painted the chassis and axles.

Their are grease nipples on the prop and mmm somewhere else, keep these greased up!
A bit of the linkage is prone to wear, pop the gaitor off under the knobs and have a gander for any wear.
Need to catch that paintwork! going to be using some zinc oxide primer on my dads doors soon to stop them rotting away

It's a Land Rover, something will always need doing.

thats a good thing

weird how the rear of the cahssis was quiet rotten but the front is mint
Title: Re: Landrover 90
Post by: Diamond Hell on 08 June 2012, 12:24
Land Rovers - often used for putting boats in salt water - hence the rotten rear of chassis.

That said my mate, Sean's just spent a couple of weeks replacing the rear section of his K-plate TDI, so it may just be that 'they all do that, sir'.

He had to do the front outriggers as well.  Have you poked about with yours yet?

That's the thing about Land Rover's - they're so badly engineered, there's always something f*cked.
Title: Re: Landrover 90
Post by: shepgti on 08 June 2012, 13:40
the boats and salt water may be the reason.

the outriggers and mint, not even any surface rust (think it must have been waxoiled for alot of its life)

was watching a landrover workshop dvd earlier and the phrase 'when working on a defender, expect every bolt to break'

my main critism of the design is that they are designed for offroading yet everything underneath is a mud/water trap!
Title: Re: Landrover 90
Post by: dazzawest1987 on 08 June 2012, 20:35
Most defenders/ land rover's rear cross members do seen to rot. I work at a independant land rover place and have lost count of how many I've seen,  the outriggers are pretty common aswell.

That's exactly why I don't like working on them, everything I go to undo is rusty and corroded.

That said would still love one though.
Putting a 200tdi in it sounds like a plan, the defender boys at work swear by them

Putting a 200tdi in it sounds like a plan, the defender boys at work swear at them

Only because the TD motor that came before it was so gutless and ineffectual.

Coming along nicely... This is one of my favourite build threads - nice to see some old british iron getting put back in to good working order.

If it wasn't for the poor economy and back breaking seats I might consider it myself...

Thanks for posting and keeping it updated.

Pump it out using compressed air.

Pump it out using hydraulic pressure from the brake system.

Buy another from the scrappy.

Buy a new one from the stealers.

Got afew tips, what we do at work is get someone to pump it out via the pedal, make sure you have pads in the non seized side obv and hold the non seized piston with water pump pliers so it dosnt pop out.

Pump it out as far as it will go, without it falling out. Get some light grit emery paper, wrap it around it and rub it down + clean it up.

Get some WD, spray it like fook, and get a pry bar and push it in as far as you can get it.

Get the person inside to keep pumping it out, you keep pushing it in, eventually it will free off, in out, bla bla, sure dont need to teach you how to suck eggs

Trust me, 19oatcake - 2012. It works every time

Seriously want a 90, top work so far!! Dont hesitate to hit me up with couple questions if need be work on them every day

At work were doing a 60 plate puma with high lift kit, diff guard, wide arches, fooking huge wheels, rock crawlers, fancy bumper re-sprayed orange + black like g4 etc etc atm, if your interested i'll upload some pics if you want

looks like that truck is getting some serious love.  bet it won't take long once you start driveing it for the TD to leave, i allways end up twerking the pump and turbo so there not so painfully slow the old TD dosnet like been tweeked they all seem to go bang  but 200 / 300 tdi's out of discos are cheep and only need minor tweeks to fit and they turn up well and run on veg oil very well

forget the rover V8 tho it sucks we had one 3.9 that used to get low- mid 20's on the mpg department probem is the old V8 will run forever if you keep throwing headgaskets at it but they are actualy about knackerd after about 60K and need a rebuild.

need to find a bellhouseing from a south african  2.8 6cyl bmw powerd 90 and bolt a more intresting bmw 6 to it out of an M5, it pissed over 90's various hot rover v8's  including some running TVR lumps and soposedly top end superfand RPI  motors  ( and better on fuel )

cheers for the replys guys. Ref the brake caliper i need to wait for a new brake hose before i can hookit up and pump the piston out, i will try and lever it as i feel once its broken the 'seal' it'll be fine as the one next to it was the same but managed to free that one.

do have an issue with the clutch/pedal which i think is the last thing to sort out really, it has a really short travel and doesnt seem to spring back enough? maybe just needs a new clutch?

when i can afford it a tdi lump will be going in for sure

Why not just buy a more recent one?
For 5900 + vat you could get a decent one, eg...

As it happens I know rather a lot about cars , I also know quite a bit about living and I do know this; your early twenties should be one of the most productive and fun times of your life.  It really is a waste of your life spending hours and hours tinkering with a rusty little car.

I think you'll find most Land Rovers will let you down - you don't need to do them up.

Jeez, where's your sense of fun - your early 20s are all about mucking about with cars, as are your late 20s, early 30s and late 30s as well.  I'll let you know about the 40s when I get there, but I have my suspicions....

I am happy to help with my experience.
I wasted some time restoring an huge Yank Tank from the early '70's, a muscle car no less, with a 7.8L engine.  That was in my twenties.  I now realise every second of that job was wasted time that I should have spent womanising, boozing, trail riding, starting a business, writing a book...

Perhaps fair enough for a genuine muscle car but to do the same for an old Land Rover is just silly.  The only old LR's you see round here are driven by bald, fat, red faced, grubby pensioners.  Ex farm workers or sold-up small farmers.  Not cool in Kendal.

Well good news and bad news, Good news is it didnt fail on anything i cant handle. Bad news is it failed on;

o/s front brake pipe (between caliper and flexi) has a kink possibly from a knock at somepoint so needs replacing

handbrake efficency too low, have tighted up the cable quite a bit and feels good but is hard to tell?

and lastly combined braking efficency was too low, possibly linked to the brake pipe and due to the fact i dont think the new pads have been bedded in fully yet. Will also completely re-bleed the system as it feels a little spongy(need 2 rear drum bleed nipples)

All in all not bad for its first test in 5 years

Looks real enough to me and will be a lot of fun.

Shouldn't have bothered with the re-spray - Land Rovers look better with patina.

Make sure you know the law around driving rights of way before you go green-laning.  Lots to come unstuck on.

to be honest if it was all the same colour to start with i may have left it :undecided:

i think ill be leaning more towards pay and plays than green laning due to such issues..

Front brakes are now fixed however whilst working through bleeding the system the rear bleed nipple thread in the drum slave cylinder broke so now have 2 new ones to fit! hopefully wont be long before it earns its years test.

You'll learn far more at a trial.

Find a club near you here:

http://msauk.org/site/cms/localGroupFinder.asp?category=469

If you've not done anything like that before I guarantee you will have more fun than green laning and it's a lot more directed than a 'pay and play' day.

If they do they get snapped up! main thing is to look for one with a *little* rot as you can drive the price down and the repair panels are a decent price and straight forward to weld

i was very lucky finding mine tbh especially as ive since discoverd a private landrover dealer in the farm down the road!

coming along nicely now, engine is all hooked up to the gearbox, fuel lines are hooked up bar blanking one of that's not needed now. electrics were 'fun' but are all sorted and it's cranking which ment undoing the crank bolt was a bit easier.

timing belt and tensioner changed

old

New

the old belt looked fairly new so hopefully that's a sign the engine has been looked after!

still to do- hook up the New custom down pipe, connect up the pas pipes, lower the rad mounts on the front x member, hook up water hoses and turbo intercooler hoses.

hoping to have it running this weekend!
