Anyone on here got any experience with these (I know there's a few porker heads on here). I've read up all about the engine failure stuff, more interested in general ownership and driving experience.
Very tempted to trade up to one from the Mazda in 2013 and just doing a bit of research. Would be most interested in the pov spec 2wd ones as that's more my cup of tea.

That's a nice one but I'd want a manual and not for another 12 months

Someone is earning too much money

I wish, it's just I've wanted a 911 since I first had toy cars and right now these can be picked up for 10-12K. It would be a stretch and MrsH has agreed on principle if I sort the carpets, double glazing and a few other bits in the flat first.

Great cars...Sure the engine issues exist...but in the 5 years I had mine, I never met anyone who had suffered it.
My RMS did leak though...not enough to worry me had I not had a warranty.
Over the the first 3 years I had my C4S, it cost less to run/service than my Audi S3.
What do you want to know specifically?
This was mine:
It was a childhood itch tht had to be scratched...and boy, did it feel good!
Early 3.4s are not great...you need the 3.6.
Carrera is a good car...especially if you can find one with PSM which make it roundabout proof.
C4s are more usable in all weathers...
C4Ss are unstoppable...just epic.
GT3s scary (in a good way)...and well out of the budget I expect.

Cheers Ess_Three, just after general details on living with them. It would be a weekend plaything and occasional blat to work thing. So circa 5K a year mileage. A C2 Manual is probably what I'd go for (maybe a Targa). Just interested in general running costs etc. My uncle uses Autofarm to look after his 60's 911 so would probably use them for servicing etc. Much as I' be happy to service it myself it would kill the value.

Nick
18-22 MPG
I went through 2 sets of rears and 1 set of front tyres in 13500 miles (first set or rears in 5000 but that included 18 laps of the Ring)
Brakes for the C4S were £1000 for full set (discs + pads, F + R). C2 + C4 a bit cheaper - genuine discs + DS2500 pads.
Services about £300/£500 alternating. The 4 yearly about £800.
Bushes don't seem to wear.
Interiors last not too bad...but seat bosters scuff and can look shabby...none too modern, but functional and hard enough wearing.
Insurance reasonable next to tuned hot hatches.
The best advice I can offer is to use it...leaving it sitting for long periods lets the seals dry out and oil leaks appear.
For me it would have to be a Coupe, Manual, 3.6...and PSM (Porsche Stability Management) or PSE (Porsche Sports Exhaust - epic!!) as an option if possible.
Targa is just wrong...weight in the wrong place...with that engine out back, the last thing you need is more weight up top.
Sports seats are good if you are of a smaller frame - they are too small for me.
Standard seats don't look much...but hold you well.
Sat Nav etc all outdated now...so don't pay more for it.
Bose is worth having.
Sports Chassis too (-20mm)...if you are lucky enough to find one.
-
Just lack that wow factor for me to even study them.
BTW they are 2 seaters not 4!
:lipsrsealed:

:lipsrsealed:
Maybe if you studied them some more you would realise thay have back seats.
2 in fact.
So thats 2 in the front...and 2 in the back...how many is that again?
Nobody ever bought a 911 to impress people - you can buy blinger/faster/better handling etc for far less....you buy it to drive, and to master the challenge.
-
All sounding good so far.

-
You call those back seats? Last time I sat in the back of one of those was with my feet on one seat and my bum on the other
-
All sounding good so far.

You have to watch the long overhang at the front - steep driveways are a no-no...same with multi-storey car parks.
Brakes will feel dead on first drive - that's normal. They just aren't over servod like most nowadays.
-

You stated it was a 2 seater.
The Boxster/Cayman is a 2 seater...a 911 is a 2 + 2...always has been...and you can use them.

We live in a 1 bed flat, no probs with a driveway.
Been reading lots of stuff on Pistonheads this evening and I think I'm sold. Just need to bust my balls this year at work to get the next step up in my current role with the associated pay rise and then find one. Well that and do the double glazing in the flat and the carpets.

It'll be expensive...you don't run one for Fiesta money...but it's an itch worth scratching, in my view.
I loved mine...did everything I wanted to do in it (round Europe, 'ring etc) and you couldn't buy memories like that gave.
My usual co-pilot and I still go on about what a car it was...sure it was 'different' handling, not as quick as an Evo (So?) and totally impractical...but when you learn it...it's like nothing else...utterly rewarding.
-
Nick, if you want to know any specifics, PM me and I can try to answer or give you my number to have a chat.
It's not a cheap move...but a rewarding one.
A C2 is all you ever need on the road...the rest do it more often in all weathers, more readily, or more hardcore...but a C2 is a damn fine steer.
Living where I do, I'd suffer a slight lack of front end feedback in exchange for 4wd (I borrowed a 997 C2S and almost spun it, so used to the C4S, and the liberties you could take with a C4S + PSM...but then again, the 996 C4S is more than the sum of all the parts!) but no doubt the C2 is a purer machine.
Since you aren't afraid to admit the MK5 is a fine machine...you'll love it!
If you can fine a late-ish 3.6 with Vario Cam and Vario Ram, they are the pick of the 3.6 non GT3 NA engines...I have a modified airbos I'll send you!
It'll make you smile...

Have a look at this place when you start looking they always seem to have something worth buying http://www.911virgin.com/porschesforsale/ (http://www.911virgin.com/porschesforsale/)

Cheers fella. For the time being you've answered all my questions. Hopefully this time next year I'll be in touch for more specific chats. I have plenty of brilliant country routes round here for blasts out and about (Often abused in the MX5) and that'll be it's main use other than nice day blasts to work and the odd dash to work and the West Country for some moorland blasts.
Good advice BTW on the Targa. It appealed because I love the topless aspect of the 5 but in a 911 I think I can live without the open air aspect (can't stand the drop top 911's in any shape).
I like the factory Aero Kit as well:

I have also been having dirty thoughts about 996s recently.
I think it's a mid-30s thing.
You've just caught it early.
The PITA for us is that we have two young girls in the family.
This wouldn't be too much of an issue if they were the correct size for their age, but our 5 year old is already in age 8-9 clothes. Won't fit in those rear hammocks for very long!
-
I'd love a 911. They're so cheap used nowadays but I fear by the time I'm 30 they will probably go up in value.
-
Spend the extra dough, and get an older air cooled 911, The 996 doesn't have that classic nostalgia thing that the 911 will smitten you with! liken it to going out to buy an E Type Jag, and coming back with an XJS...
Thom
-
Heat exchangers need replacing how often, Thom?
I'd rather have the advantages of watercooled, although the 993 is a bit gorgeous.

People dont keep 996's for long, because they're a passing whim, I know plenty of people that have owned their 911's for well over 20 years and wouldn't dream of parting with them. Generally speaking, issues that crop up on 911's are easy to solve, and could be fixed by someone like Nick, unlike the 996 that will have you hemorrhaging money to get it fixed, knowing that when its done, it will have to go up for sale...

The last of the small 911s...and undoubtedly the prettiest.
But they rot, leak oil and aren't the answer to everyones prayers.
I have enough mates with them...
996 you CAN use as a daily...it is modern enough to be used daily, comfy enough, but still retains enough 911-ness to make it a challenge.
BUT, £12k also = http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3401765.htm

Compromise in engineering design in relation to the legacy layout and the impact on positioning of major components and the packaging of the platform.
Ever heard the one about trying to replace turbo charger heat sheilds on a 996 Turbo?
Don't get me wrong, I love 'em, but it would be a 964 C4s probs for me, and then do my own take on a RS Rep.

This is a proper Porsche IMO! porsche's are common these days, nothing special, they don't excite when you see one (gtrs aside) BUT when you see a 1980's-early 90's 911 they still have presence, they draw your attention,I always dreamed of having one as a boy (mainly because of Miami vice ) and at 33 I still dream of having one ahhhhhhhh one day

Now THEY sound good. I think the engine is the same as the GT3RS with a few very minor differences but they obviously have sequential gearboxes and uprated exhaust. They sound heavenly, I admit not as good as the F1 V8s but god they sound good when stepping on the loud pedal on the exits.

The Fabspeed stuff is silly loud...my mate has them on-off his 993 C4 and they are stupidly loud...and not even a particularly nice souind...just noise.
There is a bloke on eBay modifies the standard 996/993 boxes and fits a bypass similar to the PSE, which sounds fantastic.
However if you have a local exhaust place, you can have them fit a 2" bypass pipe to the standard boxes and get the same effect, much cheaper. I think my mate paid £50 for his 993 boxes to be done.
Ideally what you would need is a pair of standard 996 stainless rear boxes to have modified.
If you buy a 996, give me a shout...I have a brand new pair of rear boxes sitting in my garage loft, you can heve them if you want to get the bypasses made.
I also have a modified airbox - which is a nice addition!
-
