I currently own a MK3 1.4 :embarassed: and having owned it for the last 1 and half years I'm pretty bored of it not to mention the fact it's cost me a fortune in repairs and is dying. So I figured it's time to get saving for a new car in the hope I can get one in the next couple of months!
I was going to go down the MK2 route but didn't want the hassle of repairs and breakdowns due to age if I don't buy a decent one  so thought I'd go back to the car I've always wanted and look for a MK4
I've just turned 20 and will soon have another years no claims under my belt so now I can go for something with a little more power. Insurance is still expensive though so an R32 is out the picture
Not sure what model to go with though... I was considering a TDI but I still want power and a decent top end (130mph or something, I know there isn't much chance to use it here in the UK but I'd like to have the option for a blast every now and then ). Then there is the choice of WHICH TDI to go for and how insurance costs are effected.
The cheapest TDI quote I got was on an SE TDI 100 which was £1500. Reasonable to say I paid £2000 last year for my 1.4 but I figured it would be a snail.
Is it worth getting a TDI? You can't even fit a dump valve can you?
So what about the 1.8T or a 2.0L? Not sure I can afford to run a 1.8T as I do drive to Derby uni daily which is about a 50mile round trip but I've always wanted a turbo.
So basically to sum that up, which TDI would you go for in terms of power/performance but still retaining decent MPG (I get about 30 in my 1.4 due to the way i drive it) or are the 1.8T's not that expensive to run?
Sorry for the long thread but want to do this right  Thanks guys!

PD130

PD130
Why? Will I get one for around £1500-£2000?
-
You can pick up a 1.8T for just over £1k now :lipsrsealed: Good for buyers, cack for sellers!
I have a 1.8T n a 115PD.Driven sensibly, I can consistently average 35 to 40mpg out if my 1.8T on a gentle drive and that's with a Stage 1 Remap (almost 200bhp)! Diesels will set you back more, I'd say by at least another grand, but you'd get even better mpg. My 115PD averages 55mpg.
Swings n roundabouts mate :undecided:

Yeah I was looking at 1.8T's and 2.0L's this morning and you can get them from anything between £1000 and £1500! but the insurance costs will ruin me I think
-
I'd avoid the 2.slow; nothing but bad reviews on this forum!!
-
1.8T all the way. Just sold mine. Enjoyed it, but the engine light will hate you.
-
dont get the 2.0 its cack drinks alot of oil as well
got for the 1.8T or pd130/150
-
2.0 is the slowest of the GTI's and isnt tuneable with out big money being put into it. also isnt that economical (around same mpg as 1.8n/a and 1.8t).
1.8 is the "medium" GTI, faster than the 2.0 slower than the 1.8t. again not very tunable due to the fact theres no turbo, again around the same MPG as a 1.8t)
1.8t is the fastest of the GTI's. and is tunable, remap, filter, exhaust, dv can see you up to the 200ish bhp mark.
dont really know much about TDI's so i wownt waste my time talking bolocks with them, have a search though and you decide which you think will be best,, plenty of info on powers, mpgs, costs ect on here, then do some quotes see what you can afford and what you like.
-
PD130
Indeed the 130 is what you want
-
Either PD130 or 1.8T.
The petrol will be cheaper to buy but more expensive to run.
Avoid the 2.0 like the plague, the 1.8 non-turbo would be a good compromise if you're going for a petrol and can't afford to run a turbo.

Thanks for the replies, it seems that most people are favoring the 1.8T or the PD130 so I'll have to get a few insurance quotes on those and see what I can afford! By the looks of things though if I am to get the PD130 I'll be in for a wait as they are much more expensive than the 1.8T! :undecided:

Go 1.8T if you can. PD130's are great but initially expensive, and would benefit from a map. 1.8T's are 150bhp as standard, with some being 180bhp as standard.
Another option is the 1.8NA which is a much cheaper insurance group, and a healthy 125bhp.

Try esure for a price. So cheap. im paying £360 a year for a 1.8t modded. But have 15+ years noclaims .Or another one is footman james ,my cuson had 6 odd points and insured a sick clanclover .Only 21 ever made in the world for £400 a year. It was like a sports car made out of fiberglass.

I just get Unfortunately, esure car insurance is unable to provide a quote based on the information you have provided.
whenever I try .
Whats the difference between the V5 2.3L and the 1.8T? They have very similar specs and the V5 is cheaper for me to insure by a couple hundred quid!
-
the 2.3 v5 is a ok engine but its very thirsty and hard to get gains from but it makes a wicked sound
-
The v5 is a bit rubbish, the 2.8 4 motion is better.
It's definitely worth saving up for a PD130 if you can though. Even one of the 115's or something would re-map nicely.
-
Although the V5 is cheaper on insurance I doubt I'll be able to afford to run it as I do a fair few miles per week  I've seen a few 115's for sale not too expensive either, what sort of gains could I see from a map? and is it expensive?
Again thanks for all the help guys!

How many miles do you cover a year, if it is a lot then it has to be the diesel, the 1.8t is not too bad on fuel but the TDI will do double the mpg in real terms.
Whatever happens avoid the 2.0 and V5

It's not THAT many, maybe 10,000 - 15,000 miles per year but on a student budget  I'm not very good at estimating fuel costs really so wasn't too sure I was just convinced that I would use loads more fuel than my 1.4L. I worked out I get about 38mpg average out of it at the moment though due to thrashing it about to keep up with traffic.

I got about 17-28MPG in my 1.8T town driving and 35 motorway.

you could always go for the 1.6
-
you could always go for the 1.6
Yeah I did consider that to be honest and it would be really cheap for me but I'd much rather have a GTI

1.6 16v are quite nippy.
Hey, you say you want a GTI, and you obviously want to save £££.
How about a Polo 6n2 GTI. 1.6L and 0-60 in 8.5 secs. The same as a 1.8T. Food for thought...

1.6's suffer with gearbox problems, for the miles you do a TDI might be the better bet.
