Which one to go for?
« on: 26 January 2012, 10:00 »
I currently own a MK3 1.4 :embarassed: and having owned it for the last 1 and half years I'm pretty bored of it not to mention the fact it's cost me a fortune in repairs and is dying. So I figured it's time to get saving for a new car in the hope I can get one in the next couple of months!

I was going to go down the MK2 route but didn't want the hassle of repairs and breakdowns due to age if I don't buy a decent one  so thought I'd go back to the car I've always wanted and look for a MK4

I've just turned 20 and will soon have another years no claims under my belt so now I can go for something with a little more power. Insurance is still expensive though so an R32 is out the picture

Not sure what model to go with though... I was considering a TDI but I still want power and a decent top end (130mph or something, I know there isn't much chance to use it here in the UK but I'd like to have the option for a blast every now and then ). Then there is the choice of WHICH TDI to go for and how insurance costs are effected.

The cheapest TDI quote I got was on an SE TDI 100 which was £1500. Reasonable to say I paid £2000 last year for my 1.4 but I figured it would be a snail.
Is it worth getting a TDI? You can't even fit a dump valve can you?

So what about the 1.8T or a 2.0L? Not sure I can afford to run a 1.8T as I do drive to Derby uni daily which is about a 50mile round trip but I've always wanted a turbo.

So basically to sum that up, which TDI would you go for in terms of power/performance but still retaining decent MPG (I get about 30 in my 1.4 due to the way i drive it) or are the 1.8T's not that expensive to run?

Sorry for the long thread but want to do this right  Thanks guys!

You can pick up a 1.8T for just over £1k now :lipsrsealed: Good for buyers, cack for sellers!

I have a 1.8T n a 115PD.Driven sensibly, I can consistently average 35 to 40mpg out if my 1.8T on a gentle drive and that's with a Stage 1 Remap (almost 200bhp)! Diesels will set you back more, I'd say by at least another grand, but you'd get even better mpg. My 115PD averages 55mpg.

Yeah I was looking at 1.8T's and 2.0L's this morning and you can get them from anything between £1000 and £1500! but the insurance costs will ruin me I think

2.0 is the slowest of the GTI's and isnt tuneable with out big money being put into it. also isnt that economical (around same mpg as 1.8n/a and 1.8t).

1.8 is the "medium" GTI, faster than the 2.0 slower than the 1.8t. again not very tunable due to the fact theres no turbo, again around the same MPG as a 1.8t)

1.8t is the fastest of the GTI's. and is tunable,  remap, filter, exhaust, dv can see you up to the 200ish bhp mark.

dont really know much about TDI's so i wownt waste my time talking bolocks with them, have a search though and you decide which you think will be best,, plenty of info on powers, mpgs, costs ect on here, then do some quotes see what you can afford and what you like.
