I just did for the first time in ages because I'm running lower than normal this month because I didn't get my full salary last month and still have a few bills coming out, no wonder my f@cking bank is low  Seems she's forgot about the small fortune in her account and been rinsing mine!
She says "oh but I transferred you £100 the other day..."
Yeah, that was for the weekly shopping that came back out the next day! Cheeky cow!
Do yourselves a favour and check their accounts if they have access to yours!

Not being funny or anything at all, I'm not married but both my married sister and brother just have joint and business accounts?
They don't like have different money they juts share it all.

personally when im older and maried ect ill only get a joint account which half of my money goes into and half of the other halfs goes into and that will be for bills, shopping, days out ect ect ect. and have my own bank account with the rest of my wage to spend on me, maybe her if its an important occasion. :)

Um.... sore subject for me to. I find having separate accounts and a joint just for the bills helps manage things..
Bellend, don't follow in your family's footsteps, should a relationship go sour, you really don't want to be worrying about the safety of your cash!
-
All comes down to trust and how you have your payments for bills etc sorted. Split everything 50/50 I say!

Fair points to all the above.

Dont, whatever you do, try giving them advice on how to manage their money, especially credit/store cards :lipsrsealed:
They fail to see that witholding £1000 in savings whilst having £1000 outstanding on their credit card (an no other way of repaying it) is a bad idea
-
 @ Sam
We used to have a joint account, had a silly over draft which we kept going into, we also had our own bank accounts from before we were married/lived together so closed the joint one, paid off the over draft in full and carried on using our old ones that had no over draft at all in order to help get control of our finances again because we were spending more than we were taking in each month.
Having 2 seperate accounts also help us manage our money easier, I find. One of the directors at our company has 3 accounts, 1 for fuel & car related bills (Alfa owner), 1 for other bills, 1 for food. He gave me the idea of doing this and it works well for us. Or so I thought, might have to stop giving her so much of my money  Not a bad balance for an stay at home mum
Chris, I told her to get rid of the store cards and even had to cut them up because she couldn't bring herself to do it when we first started sorting our sh!t out
-
I dont look at the wifes account cos its none of my business, another reason I dont look is she takes home 4-5k a month more than I do so I dont want to be left in tears.

My god! Why do u own a mk3 when your missus is taking home that much money!!??
-
I dont touch her money, I earn my own
Ive also got a jap import Sti and a 328 coupe
-
Hmm. This is the downfall of many a relationship. Money.
Now, if you are just living together (not married) then you have two options.
1. Equality
2. Proportionality
1. Regardless of salary you split all household bills 50/50. A sound argument seeing as you both live there. However this may breed resentment if one of you is one a far higher wage/salary that the other. This may lead to "its not fair" arguments, When one of you has very little fun money at the end of the month.
2. On the basis of your annual take home wage/salary you then split the bills into an fair ratio. This may be the more fair option as you will both be left with fun money, and be seen to be contributing your "fair share".
If you are married/single but jointly paying a mortgage, then other legal (on divorce/separating) considerations need to be considered with the above.
i.e if a partner is not directly contributing to mortgage payments, their other payments ( food, bills, maintenance etc.. ) will be taken into consideration on the division of assets (the house) when you split up. Yes, now cohabiting partners have rights to your property on separation. Don't need to be married.
Jonathan.

We work It
Wife pays the mortgage and the Health insurence
I pay bills-food-car-holidays-nice extras
works well for us and have never argued about money or much else actually..married 6 years
-
That's sound advice there Jonathan, for those that have other halfs that work

Other way around for us, but she's in VERY part time employment (i.e. around £400 a month) and I earn... lets just say below national average... and I have to pay ALL bills (inc mortgage) and she only has food to worry about.
-
Thats not a bad shout elvi, the proportionality thing. I am going to try it!
-

Its the best way to keep both parties happy.
Regardless of the actual amount being paid out by both of you for bills, you are both paying the same, in proportion to the money you each earn. No arguments.
-
No never as it's not my business to! I bloody should though my OH is astonishingly bad with money and completely untrustworthy with it
I would NEVER have a fully joint bank account with him, my money is MY money, he'd probably go and waste it all on stupid crap he doesn't need nor can afford!
I would consider a joint account for the bills and each pay in X amount, keep rest for ourselves.
Anyway it's all a moot point now he's redundant from end of this month, I'll have to somehow pay for everything including his debts that weren't my choice and that I've already paid off once for him
He's lucky I can be patient and forgiving.
I dont look at the wifes account cos its none of my business, another reason I dont look is she takes home 4-5k a month more than I do so I dont want to be left in tears.
If I earned that much my bloke would be my full time kitchen b!tch and no mistake.
-
Me and the mrs both put an equal amount into a joint account each month to cover mortgage bills etc... and the rest stays in our own accounts to do with as we please. That however, does not mean that when we go out to eat etc... we take it in turns to pay, it generally is all up to me! :lipsrsealed:
-
I would never have a joint, but that's just my opinion, some people love it, some hate it. I use to be a bit crazy with spending, but since having a daughter and buying a house I cleared any debt possible. Both me and my partner have separate accounts, we see each others in-comings and outgoings and it bothers neither off us, however I did let her work 1 day less a week since having our first born, wish I could do the same.
I really need to progress somehow into a real career and start earning real money... or at least I can dream
-
Had a joint account for 6 years with my partner everything is joint seems normal to us & were not even married, seems very weird for married people to have seperate accounts unless you have something to hide

I do the above
In 7 years we've never argued about money
-
We've had a single joint account since we purchased our first house back in 1995, both salaries are paid into the account. Still do too. Luckily we're both pretty sensible spenders and trust each, over the years we've also had very similar salaries too which I think helps massively in viewing things 50/50.

Makes loads of sense nowadays i think, ok costs a little to have the machine but people just dont want to pay in cash nowadays or just don't have time to go & get cash out.
I very rarely carry cash, usually only time i do is when we are on a night out.

We take card at the fish and chip shop for any amount, it encourages people to come back rather than go else where.
Even if its a small amount, more often next time it will be a big amount. Its good business.
You would be really surprised how many people want to pay with card.
-
In answer to the original question, myself and my wife have a joint account. We do have our own accounts, but all the money goes in the joint.
We both have access.
My wife is studying at the moment, so i'm paying in the vast majority of the money.
She still spends my money like its her own, so when she earns money i expect to do the same.
Its what a partnership is all about.

I think this is the first post you've made that I've actually agreed with.
There is a lot to be said for the "North South divide", I'm just glad I've left the rat race behind.
