cheers!
-
much better
-
Are you fitting black front carpets? I just got a 1.6 for my dad and did like you have done/are doing. I got all the interior in black (door cards, carpet and all the other trim) and have been gradually swapping it over for him. He's having my GTI interior and I'm having the black leather vr6 stuff that randomly lives in his :)
I have yet to fit the black carpet, but believe me changing the door cards to black makes such a difference, the car went from feeling so crappy to feeling awesome just by swapping them! I also changed the inner plastic sill type bits to black and everything else too at a later date which was equally worth doing and I recommend it.
Your guna be so happy when you swap yours all over believe me, and 8 quid is a bargain!
-
yh plan is to have everything black. i wanted to get the front seats in before i did the front carpet because of the mounts being different, so now i can fit the carpet round the new mounts. yh i wanna change all the plasitc sill trims to black too, not sure if im gunna buy new ones or spray my ones black yet tho?? yh i know couldnt believe they finished at £8! guess i just got lucky lol
you got any pics of you car/progress???
-
Looking good man. Keep up the good work. :afro:

Re: New wheels.
You know what I like.
after i put those centre caps on i did think you'd like them, think they finish the wheels off nicely, i might spray the centres with some mat black paint just to make them look a bit better bcoz there looks a bit gray (they are off a 20 odd year old polo bread van lol)
-
If you have access to a heat gun, give em a blast with that. Should do the job nicely.

Had two black and two white alloys for months now as I still can decide which one I prefer
-
White looks refreshing mate
-
Definitely the white dude!
-

-
Cheers for the comments. I'm gunna spray them white and sort some things onit bcoz I might driving something else soon ;)
-
I reckon polish them up dude.
Would be hard, but worth it.
-
Would look awesome but I really don't think that I would have the patients seems as I couldn't be bothered to spray the other two.
Just seeing but would anyone be interested in buying these off me?
-

Well not conferming anything as I'm going to look at it on Monday so might get sold before then, but let's just say after months of talking about buying a new car and trying to save for one I fort f**k it il borrow the money and sell the 1.6 to pay it back. Can you guess? (or just have a look thru the for sale section n you'll probs figure it out lol)
-
Could have picked a different colour this time!
-
Lol if i get it, it'l be the fith car I've owned, and the forth green car I've owned lol
-
Oh oh oh, what?
-
Just put a deposit down on a new car
-
So yesterday I picked up a mk3 gti 16v, so sadly I have to part with my 1.6, well not exactly as my dad bort bort it off me last night to replace the Jetta . As the Jetta is too good really for a work car.
So decided to get a couple pics of our vw collection
(http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h364/murrayminf/Photo0453.jpg)
Il start a new thread for the gti when I start doing bits too it.
Cheers
-
You going to swap bits over from the 1.6?
-
I've swapped the cd player over lol. I'm not sure about the coilovers yet because I want some desent ones on the gti but in the back of my head I know that I probs won't be able to save up for then lol

I thought that with the mk4, save up for decent coilovers....however I gave in and bought some JOMs
-
Haha, yh I did see that in your thread. You fitted them yet?
-
Haha, yh I did see that in your thread. You fitted them yet?
Nope, not got any tools with me in Doncaster, they're all in my dad's garage in Cumbria so I've got to wait for some mates to have a free couple of hours to help me fit them
Also need a different arb to prevent rubbing on the driveshaft.
-
Ah that sucks, bets it's killer having them sat there and not being able to fit them lol,
-
Looks awesome Josh.
Anything is better than standard suspension. Get the cheap coilies on, put the GTI shocks on the 1.6, sorted!
-
Was thinking of doing that, but dw it'll hopefully be dropped within the next month or so
-
Well getting this back next week as I didn't really like driving the Jetta. And I'm quite excited bout getting too, I kinda missed it.
Since the last time you saw it, all the stickers have been removed and a gti grill and chrome badge fitted (small things but big difference) and tried on the snowflakes

Really like the work mate! Some proper good engineering skills in this thread, love it!!
Great sticker in bottom right of the rear window
Wheels look really really  What rubber you got coming for them?
-
Cheers bud! Just about to order some 195/45/16 toyo t1rs for them, so little bit of stretch
I dunno if it's a good thing that I don't think twice about chopping up parts of the car :undecided:, but so far it's come out okay .
-
N yh like tht sticker too, that scheme killed a lot of good cars
-
Oh my, some very nice rubber
That scheme helped an awful lot of people though...
Where is your car ATM? Is it sat on block of wood outside your house or actually got alloys with tyres on them?

Right test fitted my Passat splitter on my spare/scrap bumper.
I thort, ah I'll bit of cutting, screw it down 10 mins later boom, new splitter
WRONG!!
Took me fecking ages
I wanted to ke the bumper as intaked as possible so that I cout run oem splitters if I wanted/broke this one
Turns out only 4 of the taps that hold the splitter on line up with the bumper.
So after an hour of cutting swearing and forcing in place
(http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h364/murrayminf/2b2dfabf-bd2b-41f2-891f-fa50c23d9644.jpg)
The other side went a lot quicker as I just put the cut one on top of the new one and marked what had been cut
Comparasen
(http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h364/murrayminf/b5c8fcd5-3403-4e49-801b-48f5b6e60981.jpg)

There's a bit of a gap on the drivers side as I kinda rushed that side, il do it a lot better on the bumper I'm using
Finally got it fitting, kinda

Looks good and will look even better once its stanced up properly. I seen a pic on vortex of a Mk3 on the deck with a duckbill and it looked awesone.....and different. Was going to get one myself but could never find one at a good price and ended up sourcing a VR splitter instead. I'm actually glad now as I have too much to do to my Mk3 without having to spend time getting that to fit right, but you seemed to have pulled it off so well done mate.

Cheers bud, I've seen a couple mk3s with it on, some looked awesome, and some looked a bit dodgy so glade this looks alright. Yh it did cost a ill bit, and didn't really like cutting something up that I'd just paid out for . Didn't wanna rush it as I knew that it wud look sh!te and I can still fit my vr6 splitter which I'm most pleased with.

Aye all the ones I seen were too expensive so went off the idea. Maybe a mod for the future. Just got myself a set of brand new in box rear Hella blues for £5.50 off ebay!! Dunno if i'll use them but still a bargain and can make some cash on them and buy a duckbill

 that it cheap!! I was watching a set of green Hellas but they were at £110 and I couldnt justify that, I would love a set of all red hellas
-
Yes the red hellas are like porn in the mk3 world these days lol. The blues I got wern't listed as hellas on ebay nor could you see the hella markings in the picture so took a gamble on them. Was pleased this morning when I relised I had got the real thing and that they had never been fitted. Worth £50 of anyones money I would say!!

Looking good mate
Thanks dude :afro:

Quite like the Silver Hellas. I have Hella Blacks at the moment and I have run greens (but I broke one  )
Duckbill looks good, I do like it, but will need more lows to pull it off well.
-
Was wondering how it would look lower, so jumped in the car and went off to find some raised Tarmac

Golf took a bit of a beating today, on the wa to my mates house (about 3 miles away) I managed to slice the side of my tyre wall. And then I tried to get up the lane up to my mate barn to change the wheel and folded the new splitter back on its self, cracking it and scuffing it!!!

Will be goin lower soon!, I'm gunna try and keep 0 camber (scene killer) as its my daily and I do a lot of miles so would like to keep these tyres for a bit
-
Agreed, i think due to to slight tyre stretch it appears to have created more arch gap so bringing it down a fraction would be good. I reckon GTI headlights and a black grille badge are needed as well.
-
Yh I wann get some gti lights and joey mod them, I'm gunna go lower but I'm running like this ATM as I need to roll be arches before I can go lower, might roll them and lower the front tomorrow
-
Looks really good

You'd have to be proper low to pull of the duckbill splitter so good choice going back to the VR one...
Does need to go lower though...but good job...like it a lot.

Cars looking good by the way murray, we will have to organise something soon. :afro:

Was good for a couple of hours at Volksfest but not the same unless you camp, all day pissups are the best!
Cars looking good by the way murray, we will have to organise something soon. :afro:
Yh the car park was shocking, wasn't too bad when we got there coz its was fairly early, but was fun trying to find a way out! yh wasntthat much todo without getting drunk .
Cheers bud, having a look at some of the other mk3s there I've realised how badly mine is crying out for a respray, but a new engine is more important! Your cars looking pritty sweet too! Yh would be good to arrange a meet, only thing is its an 1 1/2 hour drive to Bristol, but I don't mind too much.

Who said to go to Bristol? That's an hour from me. dragongreengolf can travel down to us.
There were some nice MK3s there, couple of really clean red ones too which caught my eye. Respray for me would be last on the list as I also want an engine conversion.

 yh good point where would be best to meet for you?
Yh first thingim going to do is uprate the brakes then start looking for a doner car
You going for valver or 1.8t?
-
Have to get some southerners together, screw the big boys up north.
Think I'm going valver but looking into how to get the most from the engine, you can realistically achieve 180-190bhp from one. Still researching it though. What about you?
-
I'd be up for a northern invasion!!.

I'd be up for a northern invasion!!.
But they are all miserable up there! Have you met any of Team Grumpy?

Well been putting a couple cheeky bids on some 1.8t lumps but probably gunna go abf as I like the look of the engine and the sound. I'm gunna strip it down and reprint and rebuild back up before it goes in the car. How do you get 180 out of one? As that would be sweet! And more then enuff power for me.
-

 No, but i'd love to put some faces to names at some point.

We will organise something, get the ball rolling in the events section for something soon me thinks.
Anyway, murraymint, what engine you going for then?

Abf sorry :embarassed:
Yh how can you get 180bhp from the valver lumps?
-
..Well i've met Deano briefly when i bought some shocks off him and he seemed like a decent bloke.
-
Think I'm going valver but looking into how to get the most from the engine, you can realistically achieve 180-190bhp from one. Still researching it though. What about you?
Yes you can but not easy and very expensive, cheaper in the long run to go 1.8t.

Yh that's why Ive never asked in the mk3 scetion as I know that this is the answer I'd get, an extra 10/15bhp would be nice
-
we will sort something out i don't mind travelling for a meet tbh i went upto manchester in october for a rolling road day at carbon chip tuning and i enjoyed that  i'm busy for the rest of this month but definately up for july i also want to get my car up together as its started showing its age abit now its been a hard winter
i suggest an abf conversion they are really good strong engines i havn't had one problem with mine yet apart from now i think it needs a sensor changing  to get 180 bhp your probs looking at atleast a head rebuild port and polish skimmed etc then could benefit from a lightened fly wheel and new clutch get a professional re-map a good exhaust system a good breathing cold air fed induction system and you could even get involved with itb's or throttle boddies
anyway much quicker and probs cheaper to get a s3 engine tucked in there  catch you soon

How did your car do on the rolling road?
Yh that seems like a fair bit of work for more bhp, not sure how much i will do to the engine tbh, just a rebuild and good service will do me for now. Yh an abf conversion would be much cheaper then an 1.8t as with a 1.8t I'd still need to buy an abf doner car as well as the turbo lumps and the custom looms part the list does on.
Yh some time in July sounds good as it gives us some time to organise
-
Ill go for a meet in july.
Cars lookin super cool on them new rims buddy

It produced a healthy 154.9 bhp which is better than stock its only got an exhaust system (with cat) and induction setup all standard apart from that i might get a remap done soon with a sports cat and replace the valve stem seals and hydraulic lifters as its abit tappy at the mo  i'm up for some time in july hopefully will have new wheels sorted and some of the small jobs that need doing done also

The ball joints and rod ends where still on and looked like the one the factory put on 20 old years ago. But the wheel bearings feel nice and smooth
So took them to work today and a very strong work collouge with a big hammer and the gas bottles and get the rod ends and ball joints off
Then cleaned them all up with a wire wheel

time to nut up or shut up ;)

Well today the sun is out!!!! So I spent some quality time with my car . First off took out the front mk4 seats and modded the rear mounts so now I can move them back and forward! Next, a year after o bort a set of black front carpets I finally put them in. After that I gave all the carpet a fecking good hoovering. After that's I attacked the whole inside of the car with dash/interior cleaner, then hoovered the seats and put them back in. Then cleaned all the shut edges. Cleaned the wheels then the outside of the car and then cleaned all the glass. After all that drove it down the road and has a bit of a selfwhore fest
Pics!
My sisters dog making the seats hairy!

Not quite hella all reds but they'll do for me 8-)
-
Looking good buddy, would you not be better tinting the top bit of the cl's red? Thats what i plan to do. Going to rub them down smooth, tint orange bit red than laquer and polish the whole lot.
-

Cheers bud. Yh did think that as my reverse lights are now red . Il probs end up tinting the cl lights as the rain has made the tint peel a bit round the sides and now look sh!te
-
Fitted a momo team wheel today
(http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h364/murrayminf/d21f7513-fef8-4b46-a506-43c3ea310177.jpg)
I wanted 280mm one but this one came up cheap, but after driving with it I think the 280mm one Wudda been too small!
-

Yeah you really need the laquer them to seal them from the elements. I'm just waiting on my red tint showing up then i'll batter into mine. We'll see how they turn out. Steering wheel looks good, need to get myself one of those soon.

Yh didn't lacquer then as It was only a test to see what they looked like then I left them on lol. Cheers bud came up at a very good price so couldn't say no

Well after a LOT of thinking and looking round, I'm gunna keep my mk3, I really can't face selling up, had a couple offers on my wheels but said no as like em too much :D . So im picking up a 16v donor car on Wednesday and converting the 1.6. I know I've planned many conversions, many in my head lol but this one WILL happen..... Hopefully.
-
Thats the spirit, you can't leave now the mk3 family is growing so much!...
-
Was gunna be replacing it with a mk3 anyway
But yh I couldn't jump ship....... Sorry

-
Good man, look forward to seeing it turn to a valver :)
Cheers bud. I sold my mountain bike for £750 so gunna use that to fund the conversion, picking up the doner car on Wednesday night for £350, then use the rest for a decent ss exhaust and other ill bits like finishing off my 4 stud big brake upgrade on the 1.6.
Been talking about doing an engine conversion for long enuff so it about time i did it lol
You set on doing a 1.8t conversion now?
-
Sounds like a good plan. At least you got some money to put things together :)
I'm still waiting for my MOT (Wednesday). After that irony bloody know, engine change will be last in line with paint job.

Yh loved my bike but only used it once since building at the star torture yer so thort f**k it!
Yh mine wants a respray but I found covering it with a thin layer of dirt hides the fact.
Think yours will be a beast with a 1.8t lump init and dare I say worth a fair bit too
-
Always best to sell things you don't use, let's you buy things you still don't need lol.
I reckon if I maintain it's Anniversaryness and get a 1.8T engine in there it'll be a good one, that's for sure.
-
Good choice on keeping it and slinging a ABF in her :) I was gonna do the same until my new one popped up!
-
Good one man, keep it and make your own. Love seeing cars go through it, like watching a child grow up :D
-
Cheers lads!! Well...
Donor car bort!!!!

It was cheap because the jacking points are gone and the heater matrix don't work.
I am kinda tempted to have a look under the arches and sills, and if it's not too bad, get the welding done and use it..? :?
-
If car is ok, might as well use it. Heater matrix is a pain but can be done no worries and if the other bit to get it through MOT is welding sills, keep it!
-

Yh the heater matrix is a pain but not a majorly important job.
Yh il have a look under the sills and arches and go from there, I've got most of the stuff to do a 4stud conversion so could put my wheels onit too!. Work will start tomorrow!M

Had a good look thru the service history, it had a service every 10k since new, last service was last year at 146k. The last 6 mots had no adviseries.
I've found somewhere I can store it off the road, I'm gunna repair all the rust and get it resprayed 8-)
-
Respect to you wanting to repair that, also a GTI is better left as a 5 stud as per many threads.
-
Cheers. Well I was expecting all the arches to be like the drivers rear one. And both the sills to be fecked. I work with metal as a day job so thort may as well give it a go.
-
Only my opinion but id rather drive an uprated non gti that is solid than a gti that has had a crap load of welding done.
Yours is solid and you have all the running gear required to convert yours.
Like i say just my opinion. The only thing i see the 16v has going for it is the lack of 2 doors.

Agree with Gaz on this one too!
Also aren't your wheels 4 stud?
Surely for the hassle of repairing the GTi you could just convert your other one. Would be cheaper and more fun would it not?

^^This has to make the most sense in the long run, the sill on the valver looks a mess.
-
I wouldnt waste my time and effort with that shell, not only is yours more solid its also a better colour. Just gut the valver mate.
-
Yh can see all your points and that was the plan. But after a lot of thinking and head scratching I think Itl work out better for me in the long run to repair the gti. Firstly if I convert mine, I will have to rush it ina way as I won't have a car and my work is 20 miles from my house. So if i repair the gti I can take my time and do it right as il still have my 1.6 to drive round in.
Secondly I'd feel a LOT more confident doing the bodywork on the gti then gutting it and fitting it all in the 1.6, as I've done body repair and refinishing at college and now as said before work with metal daily, here's what I've been doing at work most recently.
http://s1106.photobucket.com/albums/h364/murrayminf/cobra/
But as much as I'd like to think I know what I'm doing engine and wiring wise, I don't know much at all and would need a lot of help.
The only big things that need doing on the gti is a new rear arch welded in and bend up a pice to do the sill. I would just patch it up, I'd do it properly, cut all the rust out.
-
I'd repair the GTI too
-
No matter how good a repair id always know that the car had been welded up which would bug me.However im not a bodywork man(i can do it i just hate it)but the mechanical side of it is simples to me so thats why i would do it.
You also have to factor in a respray with this one unless your just going to cover the patches up with the sill and arch kit.Again something that would bug me.
If you sell youyr green one it will make baby jesus cry.Dont do it.
-
One more point to make, guess you have looked into it but how does the insurance stack up for the GTI against yours converted.
-
If your good with metal and welding then i would say fix the gti. Nothing wrong with a car thats been welded, usually ends up stronger than when it rolled off the production line. And if your that good, you could do it without it being obvious.
-
I agree with Jamo on that too. Its in your mind as to how you feel about welding it up, and in the grand scheme of things, its not a bad thing provided you do it properly! Good luck with it anyway mate, and it make sense with your reasons behind it too!

No I don't mind having it welded if it done properly. As for a respray my 1.6 needs one also so I'd have to pay for a respray no matter what it did.
If/when the green one goes Itl be on standard sus with steals and black bumpers.
I'd repair the GTI too

No Havnt looked into that tbh but when I changed the insurance over to my old valver it only when up by £200 so not too bad.

Yh I'd do it right so you couldn't tell it had been welded. No ugly patchs over rust lol.

I LIKE THE GREEN ONE!.........
I love the green one!! but im sure when I've finished with the black one you'll like it too!
-
Even if i do i will lie because i will miss the green one.
-
The green one does look fantastic in all fairness, I particularly like the rear lights. But then the black one does appear to scrub up well, despite having a few scabs. The argument as I see it, is this; the green one is apparently more solid and so is ready to be graced with a well serviced ABF. It would make for an excellent 'sleeper', which is always cool.
The GTi on the other hand will save you all the work of the transplant of not only the engine but the running gear also, which will be time consuming, leaving you potentially carless for an extended period of time. Not an ideal situation when you're employed a significant distance from your home. You may also have to part with your beloved alloys, since, as Wayne states, the 5 stud setup is preferable.
You are more bodywork inclined, rather than mechanically.
The logical path therefore seems to be to repair the GTi.
Though I will admit I side with LowlifeDubber on the fact that I think you should keep the green one!
Good luck either way, intrigued to see which way this will go
-
What you doing with the wheels then?
You going to convert to 4 stud?

That looks proper sick! As brad says, it's definitely worth converting to 4 stud to keep those wheels of yours, they are fooking lush! Am I right in thinking all you need for the conversion is some four stud hubs and some Ibiza cupra/MK2 16v/G60 discs and your away?
-
Cheers bud. Yh getting up the unit on Thursday hopefully and then the work starts
Yh bud. I've got most of the 4 stud conversion, I have
Mk2 16v hubs
Mk3 280mm gti callipers and carriers
Mk2 g60 vented brembo discs
New track rod ends
Just need
New pads for front and rear
Mk2 discs for rear
New bottom ball joints for front

I've also bort a set of let vr6 3door colour coded side trims so no more arches.
And also sourced a new rear arch repair panel

Your converting the GTI to 4 stud

Your converting the GTI to 4 stud
Yup. Well if I put the brakes on my 1.6 with the abf init, it's considered an upgrade, but on the gti (basicly the same car bar two doors) its considered unsafe . I can't see it myself. Yh okay the wheels will have for less bolts holding them on but there still gunna be safe.
And i think the insurance company would be more concerned about a 1.6 with and abf init then a gti with oem 4 stud brakes

Completely the wrong way of looking at it and I doubt your insurance company will share your view, a mk3 GTI was built with 5 studs and uprated hubs and bigger bolts for a reason and not just for fun.
But I have nothing more to say on the subject as I think it is madness to even consider it all, even more so when the wheels you have are available in 5 stud.

Okay well I think we'll just have to agree to dis agree
I did think about selling the wheels but couldn't bring myself to doing it. Also they we only £350 and the fifteen52 5 stud ones are £700
-
Don't you need to change lower arms, etc as they are different?
I don't agree with changing to 4 stud, plenty of wheels to choose from. I wouldn't say it was a dangerous move though. I've been OK with 4 studs.
-
Changing the wheels would save so much time and effort but fair play to you for going about the swap anyway.
