Title: New wheel manufacturing company...
Post by: Jack3559 on 21 February 2011, 12:03
Would you trust these guys?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140512853313&ssPageName=ADME:X:AAQ:GB:1123

0 Feedback, no wheels sold.

How would they make the wheels?

Would the wheels require ridiculous amounts of balancing due to being made by amatuers?

Do the wheels actually look any good?

Discuss.

I like them but like yourself would be hesitant in commiting to a purchase until id seen some positive feedback on there.

I'm just slightly confused as to how this bloke managed to produce 200 wheels.

I'd love to know how they're made - I'm a bit concerned that they're just banded steels.

Could be rejects or faulty stock, I would not be happy until they have some feedback.

"Hi Jack,

Thanks for the question.

We get them made in China by a Steel wheel manufacturer that makes wheels for all sorts of cars and has been for years. They are made using good quality steel and are structurally very strong. We also specifically asked for longer welds joining the centre with the rim than normal steel wheels to ensure we had the best strength possible.

The chrome is tested to 500 hours salt water washing to ensure they dont corrode too easilly. They are currently DOT certified and in the near future we will apply for TUV approval too. However they are fully certified for UK.

As with any chrome we cannot guarantee that it will not rust if not looked after, they will need to be kept fairly clean and occasionally polished. However I am sure they will last a very long time.

Kind Regards,
Oliver

The fact the outer rims are chromed suggests they're not banded steels?  The people I've known to do banded steels said that although possible would be really very expensive.  The price is fairly competitive so they're either genuine or super dodgy... Haha.

I do really like them though, but the lack of feedback and such is a worry.  I'd buy them but I'd want to go up there, physically see the wheels and any documentation first.  If he's genuine I'm sure he wouldn't mind accommodating.

On some products this is the case but admitedlly the seller has already stated that they've specified that the wheels are to have extra welding around rims for increased strength.
Ive just sent the guy a message as im intrigued into these myself and to whether he has any plans on suppling rims for the 5 stud masses.

The trouble is and I know this from the cycle trade what you ask for and what you get when dealing with China are very different.

Labour is very cheap, to give you an idea, a company I use ordered 400 cycle frames, only 45 were able to be sold the rest had problems.

Saw that... what were they thinking?

What I find even funnier are peoples comments on the article "This wall is just like the walls of the British government."

I don't know what kind of crack they're smoking over there.

As long as those wheels are good though, I'll be happy!

those wheels look very nice. not bothered about the feedback scenario as if pade with paypal you can claim monies back should it go the way of the pear. id be interested to know the process of manufacture and spec of steel & chrome finish used and if the regs meet Eurpean standards.

on the made in china comment...thats where a large part of the worlds steel comes from so i dont see too much of a problem with the quality of it!

He said: "Yeah, I can understand that. Someone bought a set through eBay yesterday and they collected same day and said they would leave feedback today so that will be good. I do have a personal account which is 100% positive but obviously had to start a business account for these wheels for legal purposes, so yeah the zero score is frustrating but will build soon I'm sure."

Dan as I said earlier it is not the quality of the steel but the making of them, labour is really cheap and they tend to cut corners.

TBH  as long as the steel they started with is ok you'd actualy be hardpushed to f**kup makeing a wheel.  the welds are sbout the last thing id be worryed about.  bet  the chrome plateing is sh!t tho

Just a thought, if someone was thinking about getting some why not buy a set and take them to a wheel specialist and have them check out the welds, the quality of the metal, xray them to make sure there's no cracks or defects ect.

Not sure how easy it is to check if its a naff wheel but its proberbly possible if you had the right equipment and know how ect?

steel is very easy to work and weld predictably and to a standard that is more than sufficent for a wheel TBH.

if they were alloys i woudl be a lot more suspictious  as there are a lot of really really sh!t aluminium alloys that come out of china,  usally of a completly random composition made of recast sh!t.   ally is a lot less forgiveing and recast amalgum alloys can have serious contamination issues and sketchy propoties resulting in metalfatiuge setting in rapidly

Hi Guys,

I am Oli, one of the Directors of Bullet Wheels,

We’ve had a few questions through Ebay from people mentioning your forum so we thought we would come take a look, and have read your comments with interest. As you are aware we are a brand new company and the “Bullet One” is our first design to hit the UK market. The company has been 18 months in the making, from finding the right supplier to adjusting the design to accommodate the measurements and spec we wanted. All our hard work came together as we received from our manufacturers the first batch of our new rims last week.

We have noticed that there are a few sceptics out there questioning the quality and finish of our wheels due to lack of feedback on Ebay. We understand you holding back and in order to put your minds at ease we will be offering 10 sets of our wheels at the special price of £325 exclusively for forum members. This offer is only available through e-bay as we want your feedback and intend to be creating wheels for you guys for a long-time to come!

We are positive that you will love these wheels but as always, just in case, you are more than welcome to return them to us if you feel they are not for you!

Please either message us through Ebay or give us a call quoting the code

â€˜COME ON LADS LETS HAVE THEM A LITTLE CHEAPER’

To take advantage of this exclusive offer. (First come first served!!)

We are on hand to answer any questions you may have so please don’t hesitate to call or PM me on here. Also if you feel like the drive or live in the South you are more than welcome to come and view the wheels yourself! We are based between Alton and Basingstoke in Hampshire.

Thanks in advance for your support and business, keep chatting about us!

Cheers,
Oli

Hi Gav,

We have sold a good number of sets now, (mostly outside of ebay) and people have been happy with the quality. At this time, we don't have any 5 lug sets, but we are looking to produce them in the future. But at this stage its hard to say how soon.

Kind Regards,
Oliver

If we get a good demand for 5 stud then its something we would definitely look into doing soon. We can order these wheels (at this specific size) with any PCD but we have to order at least 50 sets for it to be viable. These wheels are perfect for mk2 and mk1 golfs but the question is, is 15x8 with ET 17 a desirable size for mk3 gti's? If 15x8 is desireable and would sell in those quantities we could definitely produce them soon. But if you guys mostly want a larger diameter we would have to make new moulds specific to that and that would take longer to produce.

For now, if you wanted some, the easiest way to do it would be with some 5x100 to 4x100 adapters. Extra cost but a simple bolt on and go.

I've also heard that there are companies that can redrill them. But I really don't know much about this and the cost.

As far as 5x100 stud patterns go I think 15x8 and 16x8 would both sell well, as would staggered sets.  My favourite set up for a mk3 is 15x8 fronts and 15x9 rears, but I suspect later models would want a 16"

16"s would sell better for a mk3, pointless fitting 15"s really as that is the standard size.

Not really, you can get a mk3 as low on 16"s as 15's with the right offset and tyres.

I'm not sure whether I'd go for 15's or 16's.  For wheels that wide I suspect 15's would need a lot less work to accommodate them.  I've not really seen that many mk3's on wide 16's, most of the ones I've seen in person that are down and out are on 15's (which in itself is a reason to go for them I suppose).

I know from previous experience though how much difference jumping from 15" to 16" can make when running a super low car (driving perspective, not looks).

I was going to leave the above sentence as 'one inch can really make a difference', then realised the company I keep on here and decided against it.

Tyre sizes make a difference, 195/50/15 and 195/45/16 work out about the same in rolling radius, so 16"s will be ok and also were a factory fit on anni's

16"s on a mk3 are fine, 17"s can spoil them however.

I was going to leave the above sentence as 'one inch can really make a difference', then realised the company I keep on here and decided against it.
But you put in anyway?!
Yeah they are nice wheels

17's are too big on mk3's.  How would tyre stretch affect the drop?  Is there an equation somewhere?  surely a 195/45/16 on a wide wheel would have a different radius to a 195/50/15???

I'm not disagreeing Wayne, I've just never been able to work it out.  If a 16 would fit I'd probably go with that.

Although this is elementary as the wheels don't yet exist

It is not exact as such but a 8x15 and a 8x16 with the correct size tyres and offset will work out the same in terms of clearance.

Hi Sean, did you see this below from an earlier page? If you are interested in a set you can allways come down and take a look.

Oli

"Hi Guys,

Cheers,
Oli"

Google banded steels, there are a few mk3's running 8" at the front and 9" at the rear.  Although they won't look the same it'll give you an idea of wide wheels on a mk3.  In fact, I'm supposed to be picking up banded steels that wide this weekend.

Colour coded centres did look a bit cool on the chuffwagon.

I'm not sure about painting the lips though because they're polished up quite nicely.

I'm pretty stuck on gold really... I'm getting the car wrapped in white vinyl pretty soon, so gold will go with that still.

I just meant before I bought my vinyl.  The great thing about Vinyl is that it has made colour changes a much more viable option as a mod.

House of Kolor must do something.  There's a really good place in Rayleigh that makes paints too, but I can't remember the name of it for the life of me.

How would you reccommend spraying your wheels?

Do they need etch priming?

Actually I didnt do mine in the "proffessional" way. I simply went down to halfords picked a colour and bought a few cans. with a quick rub down with wet and dry to key the surface they came out great with a couple of coats and a good polish. I just painted the ford Ivory white straight over the black and with 2 coats and it was great.

I painted another set silver which required lacquer and did that the same way and again looked really good.

But I'm sure there will be proffesional painters on here that will tell you the right way to do it.

There are a few flecks on it but nothing a polish wouldn't sort out.

The back of the wheels look a little bit untidy where the paint has been sprayed on quite thick, but you won't be seeing that when they're on the car.

It is! this offer is for forum members only but not just this forum.

We've sold quite a few sets now. Theres a guy who I'm not allowed to name (he is well known) who has bought these for his show car that will be entered into all the shows this year too!

Well...

I got them on the rear.

They look lovely on, but they need spacers at the front to fit over the calliper.

I'm going to grind down the casting seam on the bit that fouls and try again tomorrow.

Yeah, the bore needs reducing by a little but, that'll be covered up soon enough.

So... When I can, I'll spray the centres, roll the arches and bring it down a bit.

Oh... And fit the fronts somehow.

Just wanted something skinner. Less poke.

Just had a test drive though and they ate awesome.

I will have to roll my arches and run camber though.

Rotten sills, floor and seatbelt anchor points.

Headlight needed aiming, rear plate light needed doing.

NSR wheel bearing and stub axle.

Plus a few more he didn't mention.

I've just managed to knock £300 off the price by asking.

I'll do the bearing myself as well to save a bit of cash.

Shaun you can see the rust breaking through the plastic covers in places. Typical mk3! Saying that it costs us nothing to maintain, the old girl keeps going and doesnt break down (touch wood!).

Gutted you have to sell them jack! They look awesome in the photo in your for sale thread!

Hope you manage to get the work done to fix the car...

alright oli i was wondering if these wheels would fit my 2003 caddy, i have fitted at the moment g60's with 195/45/15 and was just wondering of i would need spacers? i realise that i will need spigot rings, i was also wondering what size of tyre would be best as i dont want much stretch

cheers michael
