I do roughly 25,000 miles a year. My heart wants a Golf R. I could not even justify having a GTI with such high mileage. So my head decided on a Golf GTD. :nerd:

I'm very happy with my GTi, but that's one helluva review and does make me go slightly green I have to say!

The 'R' is a great car.

I did not buy one because:

[1] It was not available sooner than the GTi.
[2] I prefer the front and profile look of the GTi.
[3] I badly wanted the Jacara seats. So iconic.
[4] I felt the boot in the 'R' was a bit too small for my purpose.
[5] After having driven both, I prefer the lightness of the GTi.
[6] I wanted a car with the 18" Monza Shadows (Detroits). So iconic.
[7] I like the manual gearbox and I felt this suits the GTi more than the R, IMO.
[8] I drive mostly in London, so I felt I did not require or would notice the extra performance.

That was the logic then.

Now, I am toying with the idea of buying a BMW M3 Coupe in 2012, maybe.

Oh, I truly love my GTi, more than I have any other car. Funny that.

I think the R is a bit too mature to be a great fun hatch--That's why mags like Evo prefer the Clio 200 or Megane 250.
Since I trust German cars more than French. My personal preference is a Bluefin 'MANUAL' GTI fitted with lighter 17 alloys and better tyres such as conti sportcontact 5. I am sure it will provide more fun on our B roads being lighter, ride better and more agile!

BTW: The smallest available size of the Conti 5Ps will be 225/40 R18s. These will be in January 2011. I've ordered mine already!

I am still thinking about which lighter alloy to go with my summer tyres!
Oz vs BBS
At the moment I prefer the Oz Alleggerita. Their 17s weigh 6.35kg  which is mighty impressive!
Shame BBS don't give out the weight of their wheel for comparison!

The GTI is all the car I want and need, it is fast when I need it to be and is as good a family car as it is a sports car.   For me an R would have been a very extravagant waste of £5000.

Sensible thinking Giz, not to mention the additional fuel/insurance/maintanence costs etc.
I initially wanted an R, but was pursuaded to be sensible by my frigging wife.........of course I'm not bitter

if the GTIs were 4WD i don't think i would mind so much, hot hatches are supposed to be mostly 2WD aren't they....
it's nice of you to say they are an icon, but i think only the mk1 and mk2 are the real icons, at least at the moment. the mk6 needs a few more years (probably at least 10!) before you could say it's an icon.

even if the current crop of Golfs turn out to be icons in the future, they all have the mk5 GTI to thank for it, it revived VW into being a big player in the hot hatch market.

I looked at both the R's from stock when i was been messed about by my dealer and VW with my GTI order. I was on the brink of cancelling the GTI order so looked for alternatives. At the time due to VAT+price rise and the great deal i got on the GTI i was looking at an extra 10K+1K(lost deposit) to cancel my GTI order and buy an R in similar spec.
I think what sealed it for me was a lass who worked at the VW dealer did not know what the R was and thought it was just a basic model! But she knew what GTI was as do most people, you don't have to explain what a GTI is.
I did think hard about it and the Golf R just did not look special enough to me but i was interested in the Scirocco R as it looked more sporty and most people would not mistake it for a bluemotion with big alloys. The only plus points to the golf R for me were the 4wd for snow but the extra performance i would rare use if ever (I drive normal not like most on here) I then decided to just wait it out for the GTI and see what happens and i could spend the 11K i had saved on something else for the winter months so i would not worry about all the other idiots hitting my new car in bad weather conditions. I could for example have got a mk4 R32 or mk5 R32 or mk5 TDI 4motion with the money saved for winter duties and may still do that.

I think the opposite Snoopy, I think that is what makes the R so special. Its a wolf in sheep's clothes.
Most Chav's in their souped up Novas and Saxo's wouldn't have a clue.
Yeah they would know what a GTI is but I'd much prefer something more subtle.

I've even got the 3 kids and the Mrs spotting R's when we are out and about. They don't bother with the GTI's now as they are 10 a penny. I'm talking about all models.

that may indeed be true but i think it's the more popular models that stir the strongest memories in years to come. imagine 10 yr old kids now, they are probably going to more likely see GTIs out and about. when they grow up to be 20 something they are going to remember the GTI brand more strongly. that's what i think anyway. The GTI brand is still pretty strong now thanks to the way VW have revived it in the past 6 or whatever years since launching the mk5 GTI.

Where are you getting it?

My screenwash was refilled when the car was serviced ten days ago, and went solid on Thursday.  I don't know what they put in it.  I've been reduced to carrying an old towel soaked in neat screenwash to wipe the windscreen with when it gets too filthy to see through.  I need to use the screenwash at every possible moment to get rid of what's in it, so I can refill with something that's a bit more familiar with the liquid state of matter.

Is it just me but I don't like the seats in the R.....? The cloth trim looks really boring compared to the GTI cloth. I would have to spec leather if I was to buy one.

Like lots of car nuts in this country I used to love big wheels but save pennies for my tyres. Now I am very picky with what tyres go on my beloved motors as tyres play one of the most important role in a car handling + safety. If you go through these tyre review, it is amazing how much better a Conti or Michelin perform eg. aquaplanning compare with budget tyres.
In motorsport like F1, a tyre with the wrong compound can even cost you a race!

For a long while the TV show hasn't really been about the cars. But i personally find it wildly entertaining. It's one of my favourite TV shows. Yes Jeremy is old but he's funny.
As for the 'feel' of the car and whatnot, it's all well somebody else telling you in editorial, but your own personal experience of it might be different. That's why when you are considering buying a car you test drive them yourself. I must admit when I was considering getting a mk6, the only things at the time encouraging me to buy it was the VW badge, the GTI name and the looks, and the strength of reputation from the mk5. i had a test drive in it and it was a good experience. i knew from the test drive it was a car i could live with every day just driving around doing pretty normal stuff. i had actually watched all the vids and reviews AFTER i had ordered it. yes sounds mad doesn't it.

As for printed car mags I don't really read them. there is the internet and these forums where i can get info for free. I'm not that hardcore enthusiastic about cars to want to know about the latest and greatest things.

A fantastic car and a great review.

Is it just me but I don't like the seats in the R.....? The cloth trim looks really boring compared to the GTI cloth. I would have to spec leather if I was to buy one.

Yeah you have to spec leather in it. Although I do like the grey contrast stitching, which isn't translated into the leather ones  GTI fabric is bang on, very retro, although my mrs doesn't get it, she's too young to remember the orig!!

reading that Top Gear review makes me think i bought the wrong car....
Topgear is a s***e mag. They never really talk about steering feel etc.. Their TV show is even worst. Their star journalist--I mean that tall fat middle-age flat-face curly hair man drove a SLK AMG in the past. For someone earning millions every year, its c**p!
If you really into car, I think EVO is a much better mag. At least they got better driver like Chris Harris and John Barton
If you after staistic, Autocar will be the one! They got decent driver too---Steve Sutcliffe and Jamie Corstorphine
Autobild is also a good mag but one need to know another language!

I had to order mine on blind faith alone  :embarassed: there were no demo cars, no internet reviews and if I wanted one this year I had to order in December!! Lucky it was worth it really..

I like how they do biannual tyre tests (Feb/Mar for summer tyres, Sep/Oct for winter tyres).

aww man that must have been really nerve-racking. i don't think i could have ever ordered something that expensive without at least giving it a try first. i would have probably not bothered and kept my old motor had i not had a test drive.

That is some leap of faith. What were your driving before? Did you try any MK6 golfs?

I took a manual MK6 GT TDI 140 for a spin... then ordered a GTD DSG with ACC.

There was logic with 'blind faith' in your selection. You could not go wrong and you did not. Great car, nearly as good looking as a GTi.

I brought my previous car ( a mk5 170 GT DSG ) having never even driven a VW before. The sales guy was a bit suprised when I told him that the day I picked the car up.

The car I traded in for the Mk5 Golf was a Mazda 6 2.3 Sports Saloon, so the two cars could have been more different. The Mazda was a great car in all fairness though.

So a Mk5 GT to a Mk6 GTI and yes its very likely I would go for a Mk7 in the future.  Or I may even just keep my car for another year and then trade it in for an R just to get it out my system

Some old pictures of my Mazda for the record.... it was a lot of car for £20,500 but I don't miss it

Me too!!  I put my deposit down in May 2009 before the car had officially been announced - although it was fully refundable if I didn't like pricing etc.  My order was placed in October the day the official ordering commenced and I ordered going by pictures I'd seen on the internet!  I had test driven a MK6 GTI, GTD, TTS and S3 though... and owned a MK5 ED30 - so I had a rough idea what I was letting myself in for.
I'd never seen my colour / wheel combo anywhere though... not even in pictures - so that really was blind faith!

I got a test drive of an R in February - so if I'd hated it I could have walked away only losing my £1000 deposit.  Thankfully I loved it, and I loved my colour choice when I finally saw it in April

My only slight regret is that I never saw the steel grey before I ordered my RB one, as my last one was a discreet black GTI, RB is a little conspicuous and "look at me". I have a bit of a love hate with the colour. Most of the the I love it!!!!!

And me - this is the only car I've ever ordered without driving one first. But as it's basically a cross between an R32 and a GTI, it was a fairly safe bet that it would be a good car. Like you p3eps I'd driven the GTI, S3 and R32 so had a reasonable idea what it'd be like.

Danno and p3eps - you both made good colour choices, although I regularly see I black one which looks very

Yeah we planned it on the other forum!

Our plans were somewhat foiled by your random screenwash jibber jabber, but i called in the troops. The battle cry of the R was heard (slightly muted now since we lost the V6!), and with the screeching of all four wheels spinning, they came to the rescue!

Totally agree with you on points 2,3,6 & 8(apart from the london bit)
I personally think the GTI looks better, it was the power factor that was edging me, I dont need it as my driving is short and usually only weekends but the figures look good. Honeycomb grill, 18" monzas, sold!

Funny that.

i do honestly prefer the look of the GTI over the R - to me the R just looks a bit too serious, a bit too "BMW-ish", sort of too clinical. On the other hand the GTI I look at it and I think it's like the girlfriend who's willing to go away on that spontaneous romantic trip with you without worry about how much it's gonna cost or that she's got work on Monday and she doesn't have to get ready cos she already looks great as she is........

I had full intentions of buying a set of Winter wheels - but got caught off guard by the early snow!
As above - the price of Winter tyres now is stupid, so I'll hang fire for just now.

So far it seems to handle the snow reasonably well with the regular tyres, but I think a set of Winter tyres would make it very good.

Call me old fashioned, but I like the fog lights on the GTi, and now that that they have the LED DRLs integrated into the headlights, I feel it is as 'modern' as I would like it to be. Those LEDs in the R bumper look like an 'afterthought' and have a 'stuck-on' appearance. Also, the side skirts on the R look like two railway tracks and again very 'add-on' and an 'afterthought'. Not integrated like the ones on the GTi. Ofcourse this in IMO.
The R is no doubt a brilliant and fast car.

I hear ya! I would have preferred to have fogs in addition to LEDs, but hey I suppose I want to look slightly different from a GTI, that process has to manefest itself somewhere/somehow!

How successful do you all think the mk5 R32 was in comparison to the GTI? When had my Mk5 GTI I thought the mk5 R32 was a styling disaster with it's silly shiny passat style grill. In my mind this new Mk6 version is leaps and bounds better...

Would like to hear how all you boys and girls might have made the R look different from the GTI?? Try to be constructive!

I think they have got the styling spot on with the R, i for one would love one.  It is subtle in comparison to its competitors which I think makes it more appealing.  I like the interior look on the R also.
Title: Re: Cat amongst the pigeons!

For the R, I think more 'jewel-like' LED DRLs in the headlights would look the business and leave the present area where the DRLs are empty. This will give it a very stealthy and clean look. Obviously, the headlights should be 'smoked'.

Not sure you understood what i was saying. I didn't rate the Mk5 R32! i thought it looked wrong at the front

Good for you. Loads of people must have, as they shifted shed loads of them. You can pick them up for a bargain now. I half fancy one 'cause of the engine and that noise!!

If I lose my job, maybe i'll look for a secondhand one

Personally I loved the Mk5, both GTi and R32. Though, I wasn't too keen on the silver teeth of the Mk5 R32's, of which they copied for the Jetta's. These high-spec cosmetics should be individual.
The LED's on the Mk6 R's seemed almost 'desperate' to comply with the above. Other better options should have been considered, as these are almost identical to those on the Skoda Octavia RS-whatever. They might be all German now, but come on, VW is one marque and Skoda is quite the other !
In terms of performance of hot hatches, lets face it, VW screwed up with the Mk2/3-Mk4. They recovered with the Mk5 onward.

My Mk6 GiT is perfect for me and I love it, though its a shame that VW's standards have slipped over the past few years.....

I'd have to disagree. The MK2 was just brilliant. It went wrong from mks 3 to 4.

Quite a few marques have them in the air dams, new 911's for starters.

It does piss me off a little the way VW re-use these unique features on other models. I know why they do it, but it doesn't help. No offence, 'cause they look great, but things like the rear LEDs on the new GTI should have remained and R exclusive feature IMO

Yes, this was another example. Cars should be individual, don't just stick them on anywhere (common places) and show the car's integrity/indivduality.

If you take away the front lamps as a unique location, as most new cars will have them there, including the new cooking golfs, and you take away lower down on the air dam or bumper as unique also, you're running out of locations to put them. On top of that there's probably some EU law stating they have be located within certain parameters.

Mk2 was (and still is) brilliant. Loved the Mk4 R32 styling but never quite accepted the big silver grille on the Mk5 R32 - both great cars though. The Mk6 R just hits the mark.

I much prefer the R running lights to the string of fairy lights in the new headlamps, which seem a bit fussy and girlie to my eye

I'd say sharing a styling cue with a 911 just increases integrity. The R running lights are in the same location as the indicators on the non-R Sciroccos and the Passat CC, so follow a recent VW styling trend, rather than being 'just stuck on anywhere'.

Well you can't have them on an R so you would find them 'girly'.
Be happy with your Two Cheap looking Afterthought Christmas Tree Fairy Lights on your front bumper.

Oh, and they are pretty ineffective to boot!

To catch up on the last few pages...

I like the location of the DRL's on the R.  I like the ones on Mercs just now that are in the same place, but have a slightly different shape to them too.  Personally I don't like the ones in the headlamps as they're just too cluttered.
I also agree that the rear LED's should have remained exclusive (other than those who retrofitted them!).  In the brochure they were originally classed as exclusive - but I think thats probably just the darkened lenses.

I love the side skirts on the R, and can't believe that they missed them out on the MK6 GTI.  The MK5 had them, the MK4 had them... and I feel that having a black little strip on the MK6 just looks like there is something missing.

For me the MK4 R32 is a much better looking car than the MK5 R32... but as mentioned above it is looking a bit dated.  Its funny because I really don't like the MK4 GTI - but I think the R32 looks fantastic.  It annoyed me on the MK5 R32 that it looked like a Passat from the front!

Agreed the Mk6 GTI side skirts are a pretty poor effort by VW designers.

I totally disagree.
The sideskirts on the GTi exhibit great design flair. They are most unusual and they give the car length and prevent it from looking like the fat bloated duck that the R is.

Now which R parts have we GTi owners fitted apart from the smoked rear LEDs? In sad retrospect, I prefer the cherry red ones that are now standard on the GTi.

I think you might be indulging in a fair bit of exaggeration with the above list of 'R' retro-fits.

I am truly surprised that there are some very stupid GTi owners who have reverted to this quite ugly centrally mounted twin exhaust feature of the 'R'. I dislike these as they look terribly out of place.

The reason the GTis exhausts are spread apart is to give the rear a semblance of width and prevent it looking like a fat bloated 'R' duck from the rear.

The Smoked Bi-Xenons: I am glad I did not purchase these as I far prefer the standard non- smoked Xenons of the GTi. The look more jewel-like.

The Black Door Mirrors: These are tasteless and are a sad 'one colour fits all feature' that is best avoided. They cheapen and chav-up the look of the 'R'.

I feel that the iconic GTi is the superior looking car.

I thought long and hard before posting this on the GTi forum.

On Wednesday I saw the White Golf R DSG 3 Door with Gloss 19" Tally wheels SteveP drove.

It really looked the business. The standard seats looked wonderful, the massive twin exhausts were eye openers for their size and they looked even more fabulous by being in close proximity to each other, the LED driving lights set in the bumper were eye candy and the even lower ride height made the whole car look very, very, fast and menacing. Next to it my GTi looked frumpy. The overall effect was of a higher priced premium model.

I really, really, loved it and wish I had one. No doubt. In fact, I saw him drive past me at one stage and I can say this in all honesty, everyone on the street looked at it and turned around as it went by. This does not happen to my GTi, possibly because it is red and 5 door but most probably because it looks a bit ordinary. I have seen 3 door and 5 door white GTis, but a White R shod with Gloss Black 19" Tally wheels is something else! Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous.

PS: Negatives - Very tiny boot and really lousy fuel economy for town driving."

I remember reading that the designers originally wanted the Golf R to have the wide set tailpipes (like on the Scirocco R and original R32) but the marketing people insisted they be used on the GTI to differentiate it from the otherwise identical diesel.

The little side skirts on the GTI are actually a very clever bit of visual work, as Asker says making what is a very tall bland side profile (especially on light colours) look a bit leaner. The contour on the R side skirt is supposed to provide a similar effect but as it's all one colour is less effective.

I actually considered painting my door mirrors body colour for a while but now think black is a bit more practical to repair if one gets damaged.

If I bought a Golf R, I probably leave everything standard except the door mirror---I prefer the mirrors to be body-colour!

I like the R exterior and power but I prefer the GTI newer engine, cloth seats and 2wd!

The Danno, my minder!

I am truly flattered that you trolled through the forum to find my post regarding my sudden and slightly misguided love of the R.

It was written in a moment of extreme weakness and I retract much of what I have written!

I have every right to defend the GTi which you R owners seem to view as a poor relation. It is not. It is less pricey and is different. Its iconic status will be hard for the R to emulate. The R is a follow-on GTi.

I have not only changed my mind in the cold light of day, but have also made my feelings about the R's looks very clear in this final analysis.

The R is an unnecessarily overpriced but truly brilliant car, has more power and is faster, but, for me, it is not as goodlooking as the GTi.

For me, at least, the best looking Golf is the GTi.

The best Golf is the R until now.

Next year the even better 'Golf', the Audi RS3 will be released.

It seems that the greater the performance of these petrol cars, the less pleasing they become to the eye.

Cars on steroids are not very attractive IMO.

I guess it all depends on what you want out of a car but to me best is not simply because its faster. Im not a speed freak so as long as its nippy thats all i want. I often question myself if i should have got a GTD instead and if the only reason i got the GTI was simply because of also owning the mk1 and that the GTD would have maybe been the best choice for me. The R for me just did not make sense and when i realised i could have 2 cars for the price of one i decided against it. After crashing my winter car im glad i did not go for the R as that would have ment i would have crashed the R and i would be  for months.
