reading that Top Gear review makes me think i bought the wrong car....
Topgear is a s***e mag. They never really talk about steering feel etc.. Their TV show is even worst. Their star journalist--I mean that tall fat middle-age flat-face curly hair man drove a SLK AMG in the past. For someone earning millions every year, its c**p!
If you really into car, I think EVO is a much better mag. At least they got better driver like Chris Harris and John Barton
If you after staistic, Autocar will be the one! They got decent driver too---Steve Sutcliffe and Jamie Corstorphine
Autobild is also a good mag but one need to know another language!
For a long while the TV show hasn't really been about the cars. But i personally find it wildly entertaining. It's one of my favourite TV shows. Yes Jeremy is old but he's funny.
As for the 'feel' of the car and whatnot, it's all well somebody else telling you in editorial, but your own personal experience of it might be different. That's why when you are considering buying a car you test drive them yourself. I must admit when I was considering getting a mk6, the only things at the time encouraging me to buy it was the VW badge, the GTI name and the looks, and the strength of reputation from the mk5. i had a test drive in it and it was a good experience. i knew from the test drive it was a car i could live with every day just driving around doing pretty normal stuff. i had actually watched all the vids and reviews AFTER i had ordered it. yes sounds mad doesn't it.

As for printed car mags I don't really read them. there is the internet and these forums where i can get info for free. I'm not that hardcore enthusiastic about cars to want to know about the latest and greatest things.

The Danno:

The other tyre which will be available for your car is the new Michelin Pilot Super Sport. This will be available in January 2011. Unfortunately it is not availble in the size I want.

It is probably the one you should go for. It will be very expensive.

Many thanks for the advice mate.

Hopefully I've got another 10k left in them yet

A fantastic car and a great review.

Is it just me but I don't like the seats in the R.....? The cloth trim looks really boring compared to the GTI cloth. I would have to spec leather if I was to buy one.

Yeah you have to spec leather in it. Although I do like the grey contrast stitching, which isn't translated into the leather ones  GTI fabric is bang on, very retro, although my mrs doesn't get it, she's too young to remember the orig!!

I had to order mine on blind faith alone  :embarassed: there were no demo cars, no internet reviews and if I wanted one this year I had to order in December!! Lucky it was worth it really..

I like how they do biannual tyre tests (Feb/Mar for summer tyres, Sep/Oct for winter tyres).

aww man that must have been really nerve-racking. i don't think i could have ever ordered something that expensive without at least giving it a try first. i would have probably not bothered and kept my old motor had i not had a test drive.

That is some leap of faith. What were your driving before? Did you try any MK6 golfs?

I took a manual MK6 GT TDI 140 for a spin... then ordered a GTD DSG with ACC.

I had a mk5 gti before, so knew it'd be ok...it had to be a bit better than that (and that was awesome), it was an R!

The Danno:

There was logic with 'blind faith' in your selection. You could not go wrong and you did not. Great car, nearly as good looking as a GTi.

I brought my previous car ( a mk5 170 GT DSG ) having never even driven a VW before. The sales guy was a bit suprised when I told him that the day I picked the car up.

The car I traded in for the Mk5 Golf was a Mazda 6 2.3 Sports Saloon, so the two cars could have been more different. The Mazda was a great car in all fairness though.

So a Mk5 GT to a Mk6 GTI and yes its very likely I would go for a Mk7 in the future.  Or I may even just keep my car for another year and then trade it in for an R just to get it out my system

Some old pictures of my Mazda for the record.... it was a lot of car for £20,500 but I don't miss it
