Title: 80s Styling
Post by: SoundillusioN on 21 April 2010, 23:17
My favourite decade for performance and styling was the 80s.  Insane Group B motor era and wide as feck body kits.  Was reading through a site that had all sorts of posts with mad 80s styling.. Thought I'd start one here just for VAG and see how it went.

Sbarro Golfs (RWD Mk1's based on either Porsche 928s or Merc 300s possibly others too!)

Same actually, i was a young teenager in manchester when that style was still kicking about and before i properly discovered dubs my dad had an astra.  i saw a reiger style in the flesh and just wished my dads looked like it!

To bury far far far away never to be seen
Awww come on... I know its all out of date now and a lot of them were impractical and over the top but i'm sure there are many of us who thought differently when we were younger.  IMO it was this era that really kicked off the modding scene and the pursuit to be different. They werent all that bad, as an example that first MK1 would be great if the grill and lights were changed but it was just the style at the time.  A 600 bhp Group B Audi Rally Car... you cant tell me you'd bury that!

I love all of big wide reiger stuff, im particularly partial to a reiger mk2 astra. and those sbarro golfs care just rude.
Max powers project Mad max corrado was awesome back in the day, think its still kicking around now. Ive got the original mag where they finished it and had the competition to give it away.

There was a MK4 but as it was styled in the 90s for a car of the 90s it was no where near dramatic!

i was not a massive fan of it really, but iv never loved corrados so i think thats prob why, much prefere the Escort

i think they should all be left how they were or restored to how they were but yeah, orange, pink.. both bad shades , the body kit on the rado is horific tho

horrific or not, it was done in a time when people thought it looked cool... by the sounds of it though the rado needed to be redone if it was that bad a job in the first place...i'm quite surprised by that, would of thought they would do a top job since it was going to be a prize, otherwise peeps would think MP was cheap!

on the point of horrific, 3 spokes are horrid and people are telling me to keep them on!

i found this

"It was the '95/'96 Max Power project car and appeared on the stand at the Birmingham motor show in October '96 for the last time. It was the car just after the lime/luminous yellow Lotus Carlton looky-likey (with the nice three spoke alloys but very good Courtenay turbo conversion) but the last one before the pink (sorry, Karmin Rot) F2 Escort RS 2000 (aka Projecxt 2000).

It was a nice install in the VW… apart from all the air brushing inside. It was loud, when it worked. But the sub box was made from 1in perspex… sadly, the subs weren't mounted properly and the seal between the box and a couple of the subs broke meaning the bass was knackered.

Max were glad to see the back of it… right up until one guy crashed it into a lamp post and expected them to pay for the parts/on-off paint job. Erm… don't think so."

 thats funny, "Max were glad to see the back of it" shame... sounds like they spent a lot of cash on a sh*t build... ah well, im sure they made enough money out of it during its peak.

from what i read the corrado and the carlton projects were not bult very well... at all. now thats prob not really max powers fault but the people they employed, and if i remembeer correct it was always top companys

i read the people who did the install didnt want to do it the way max power wanted, they gave plans in for 2 better ways to do it but they were rejected. the install company did the work as max power wanted but were not happy about it.... they were obvioulsy right

did you notice the pics of RS KICKER project car which was on same thread as the pink one, still looks exactkly the same
Title: Re: 80s Styling
Post by: SoundillusioN on 26 April 2010, 21:44
Yeah they wre probalby only caring about making the install look good instead of thinking about practicality and long life (being a mag)...shame about the bodywork, yeah i thought it was major players that did the work and you'd think theyd do a good job as it was being shown by one of the most popular modding mags!... mind you i suppose they didnt car if it lasted, as long as it looked good for a year or so of showing!

Yeah i did see the old Kicker... thats an old car now!.... still looks tidy but read it doesnt run right at the mo.... they should all have a reunion!

It was a std red 1.8 16v that had been lightly rear ended plus front corner damage hence why they paid so little for it, we fitted a 2.0 but they did not want to uprate the brakes or susp at the time.

The 80's were the last decade of freedom on the road in many ways. The cars that also were produced or came from the late 70's such as the Capri (Britains answer to the US Mustang we were told). But there where some very fast cars and then the injection came into play and the big 3 litre and V8's were not that un common.
In many ways these cars where a victim of their own success with many thefts and more fatalities and offcoarse the enviromentalists had plenty of ammo.
The 90's produced the speed camera, the speeding humps, the large engined cars went on the down turn as fuel started to rocket and then to me the dreaded heavy lump in your exhaust called the CAT.

Yesterday my ABF Mk2 left a Focus ST for dust, believe me he was up for it and it's the driver that REALLY MEANS IT in a close dual that wins it but nevertheless it was 80's V the modern 2010 . Speaks for itself!

What he said

Which is why I'm stuck in the 80's when it comes to cars... technology had adavnced but only to a point where it made things fun, fuel injection and better placement/management of turbo charging etc. Motorsport: nothing will ever beat group b rallying but then safety became an issue as you pointed out.

When i'm back in my dub i will always feel proud whatever i pull up next to, even if its something faster.  its not just about speed for me, its everything.

The only cat my car had underneath was due to an issue with clearance when I ran it over!  (JOKING!)

Love the 80's styling!!

Yesterday Up north (Stockton on tees) I saw a Orange BMW (now sure what model it is exactly) but had them crazy wide arches and fitted with a crazy wide 80's kit. Also sat on some lovely keskin rims. Looked the nuts. Colour was bit bright for me tho :)

Still a good example of a well thought highly modded german motor.

There was also a Vauxhall Nova modded in the 80's style afew years back in black. now that was WIDE. and Super fast.
Looked abit chavvy tho, but stood out in the croud.

I think when it comes to cars like these it has to be either or....... have a crazy wide body in a sensible colour like the Rieger Corrodo's on here or the Sbaro golfs.  or have a normal body with a mental colour.. doing both makes is OTT.

Found this

"
I used to work at a Well Known Custom VW shop in the Late Nineties that were involved in a few of the Max Power Projects... We re-painted the Corrado before it was given away, it looked like a load of Seventeen year olds had been ragging it across fields, the Kit was hanging off, the Stereo was broken, the air brushing in the back was all damaged, it looked like they had been carrying stuff about that wasn't secure... They were out of money and Couldnt afford a new Candy paint job so it got an Orange Mica instead, and looked better for it!! Then we did the Magenta Escort... That thing had the best of everything, Ford Motorsport 4x4 Rs2000 shell with no sunroof, WRC Rollcage, Steel Cosworth front wings and rear Quarters, special suspension mods to push the Front Wheels forward because of the increased wheelbase of a cosworth, Group N spec engine, One off Bodykit..... The Rear spoiler was a proper WRC Cosworth one, the first one was cut up to fit but we mucked it up... No problem just get another, right? They wern't smiling though, at a Grand a piece... If I remember right It cost somthing crazy like 80 Grand to build and we had to paint it Porsche Puce red (Pink!!!) with a Lime Green Roll Cage. It came back again before the Motorshow at Earls Court for a few bits, but again it needed a Full Re-spray Needless to say it was their last big project... "

Clean is now the modern look... This thread was just to show off how crazy the complete opposite was.... some of it was purposeful like the group b cars, wider stance etc. The very first golf i posted is an example of wide but smooth and well thought out design for RWD.  I like that one the most (apart from the square lights and grill!)  I like the kit on my car because it was a typical not over done look of that time.  I do love the clean Euro look but I wouldnt strip mine down for it, i would rather buy another car thats not kitted.  My kit is no fibre glass rubbish.  its original BBS and tough as fook!

Engine:
        1.3L 1298cc(79.2.cu in) 16valve DOHC
   100HP @ 6500RPM
   83 lb-ft of tourque @ 5000 RPM
   EMPFI (Electronic Multipoint Fuel Injection)

the swift GTI was alot faster than what paper said too, they could easily show up alot of much bigger powered cars, an absolute GEM of an engine they go right round to almost 9k revs too. One of our fave battles was against dave of B autos in one of his 2.9 VR6 mk 2's, which could not catch the swift hahaha, then their was a guy in 205 hp RS turbo who would just not believe my car was still a 1.3 after he had been easily cained... such great fun, i still have the car stored away and miss driving it, keep almost getting it out and re building the engine... one day i will , the car is a bit like what your mk1 is to you i guess  :nerd:

those pics of the skeete R5 turbo kill me, that was such a top motor in its day, to see it like that now, iv got the mag still, and its even in one of those previous links i provided from retro rides forum...

i wish i had, that was from a guy that was in the army, it had spent most its life in germany, but was mint, i padt £6k for it,  my mate had it after me, and kept it well, but it was the 90's, we were into the club scene  he got into some bad drugs (crack) and seen as the rest of us were not into that he dropped of the radar, the car went to rack and ruin, and was sold on for peanuts not long after.

for some reason the swift meant alot more to me and i always kept it, really was a good fun car..

likethe look of them rims bottom left in the ad you posted

one one of the retro ride links i put up earlier, a advert for the teddy bear wheel has been posted, says they were £150 each rim at certain VW  dealerships

the swift GTI was alot faster than what paper said too, they could easily show up alot of much bigger powered cars, an absolute GEM of an engine they go right round to almost 9k revs too. One of our fave battles was against dave of B autos in one of his 2.9 VR6 mk 2's, which could not catch the swift hahaha, then their was a guy in 205 hp RS turbo who would just not believe my car was still a 1.3 after he had been easily cained... such great fun, i still have the car stored away and miss driving it, keep almost getting it out and re building the engine... one day i will , the car is a bit like what your mk1 is to you i guess  :nerd:

those pics of the skeete R5 turbo kill me, that was such a top motor in its day, to see it like that now, iv got the mag still, and its even in one of those previous links i provided from retro rides forum...
cant believe youve still got the swift, thats great.... yeah i was a litle disturbed by the R5, only good thing is he didnt get the chance to put that gash bumper on!

yep still got her, looks alot different now, sadly, not long after that picture it was vandalised outside a nightclub i was working in, was drug related, not to me but one of my best mates who had done similar to another persons car a few days before (was a golf gti as it happens) the swift was very well know at the time and took the brunt off the argument, i was so gutted. almost let it go the way of the dodo but i ended up taking it off the road and it was re built yet again, by this time it was 1999, and the in thing (for jap cars at least) was very mad colour changing paint schemes, it was finished in a gold/purple (the shame haha)  but i loved it and it was one of the firs to have this type of paint. 3 years later it was locked away in my dads garage on axle stands and its stood their ever since. it has survived in great shape too, not many of these cars left.

its tempting to get intouch with the guy about the skeete R5

He doesn't say what the crack is with the engine..... you have to ask.

Mind you, who care's, I'd rather ask what the feck is going on with the rest of it! Not sure what he was thinking about when he got those numberplates, was he building a bike?

Don't know why you'd bother, the recess at the front is there for a standard plate, looks daft it you don't fill it with one.
