Well definate musts are: head gasket, head bolts, 2 x coolant

Then depending on when it was changed: cambelt kit

Title: Re: Head gasket
Post by: barry-gti on 13 January 2010, 21:41
Cambelt was done Dec 08, I've been told that you have to do Cambelt at the same time and skim the head
Title: Re: Head gasket
Post by: Purely VAG on 13 January 2010, 21:48
Oh aye head skim too (£50 up this way), Yeah no garage i know would do head gasket without fitting cambelt kit.

Cheers mate, Wondering weather to get AGU Head and intake while i'm at it lol. might make me feel better about the situation  :undecided:

And, its been a long story i think. but, Just went out tonight and got a warning light for my water, and then got a warning light for my oil. took the cap off to top up my oil (which i thought was weird because it was topped up Saturday) And saw the Mayo on it, Then open'd the header tank and it looked like melted chocolate.

No Car. No Happy

Unlucky mate, sorry to hear that  . Let this be a warning to everyone.. water isn't coolant - with weather like this don't take the chance.

Post by: barry-gti on 13 January 2010, 22:32
i dont think it was that, The coolant has been gradually getting browner and browner over time. And running out quicker and quicker. BUT, i think thats the lesson. GET IT CHECKED IT STRAIGHT AWAY!  :embarassed:

Does anyone know if i will need anything else other than an AGU Head and gasket to fit my AUM?

Nuh u just need to get a AGU head from the breakers and get it skimmed and also inlet mani to change to AGU. Run your rocker cover with the head.

Get a new gasket and also do the cambelt and water pum at the same time for the sake of £100

i was gonna do the cambelt, i suppose it makes sense to do the water pump

Yeah they are, The fitment of the AGU coils are different but AUM rocker cover should fit AGU head... Someone tell me if I'm wrong though!

the AUM rocker fits the AGU head no problem but you can only use the AUM coilpacks as the AGU rocker cover has bigger holes for the coil packs! BTW i think hulmie will have a spare AGU inlet manifold as he brought mine for polishing!

So i need AGU Injectors aswell now?? lol. Will that affect any performance?

And BaV, got offerd a head and intake on Edition. He said that the head is worth £200 of anyones money and that he will hold it for me untill i know whats the definate problem...

And i'm awaiting info from Jordy on edition about the intake...

But yeah if you could have a look that would be sweet

Cheers mate

And i was just speaking to some polish geezer but it sounds like he's chattin a pile of shyte.

Basically he said that if it was him he wouldnt be putting the head of a different car onto his and that if his head-gasket ever went then he would put a new engine in it. Because, If its over heated then it could have f**kked the pistons and it may keep over heating again and again. and you can pay the same price for the work being done to get a new engine and get it fitted.

i said to him that would mean that everyone who has a head gasket gone should change there engine? he didnt really answer but he said to ask someone lol.

can anyone let me know exactly what i should be getting? Its only i havn't had much involvement in the internals of engines.

I know now i need the head, and the head should have the Cams in? and also is there anything else i need with the cams? and i need to get the AGU head skimmed and tested? and then i need head gasket, New intake manifold and new injectors... And then a new cambelt and water pump?

Cheers

Polskie talking rubbish bud, i've replaced head gaskets (proper job, skim head/replace worn valves/full head gasket set injector seals etc/water pump and new belts and bolts) and the engines felt like new and ran on and on!

Although there was this one time when i ripped a cam seal upon refitment and didn't realise until after i'd been fooking around doing donuts on the trafford centre car park when my oil light came on and the big ends sounded like two monkeys smashing hammers on my engine   :lipsrsealed:

Oh yes you want the complete head gasket set and not just the head gasket, if you do it properly the first time you won't have to do it again!

You only need to replace the valves that are worn should be around £8 each and there maybe a couple that are sharting to wear at the seat, the machine shop that skims your head can check/replace everything it shouldn't cost too much and they will fit the new stem seals that come with the head set while they are at it

ive rebuilt a few engines over the years and can tell you know that if you take your car or cylinder head complete with cams etc. they will be able to send it to an engineer and what they will do is strip it down and then skim the head and then reseat all valves, clean the lifters, put in new valve seals and refit cam etc. this should come to no more than £500. Your cylinder head will come back looking brand new. then with the head kit you will have left over the headgasket and head bolts to fit.

this will do fine, no need to get a new head as that would still want skimming if its second hand.

Is there actually much proven difference between the large port/small ports?

Ive not seen any... Its not like we see AGU's bhp topping AUM's with same turbo is it?

I guess he'd get less mpg due to loosing the vvt(would he need AGU cams) and he may need to tweek the map to suit?

We was actually talking about this yesterday, isn't there a way to put the AUM Cams and Sensors for the VVT into the AGU head or something like that?

Jrd,

from what i've seen from R-Tech Rollers the AGU's with K03s do gain a bit more BHP. BaV Is pretty close to them though...

The only reason AGU's top most AUMs with same turbo is because they are apparently easier to map as they have less sensors and stuff holding them back.

And you can still run an AGU with vvt you just need to swap the tensioner / sensor thingbob from the AUM head which is what im doing.

Well if you can get a AGU head and inlet for cheap enough then i would probably go with that and use the bits from your head to get the vvt to work.  And as for the injectors im sure A D would be able to get them to fit

Well, The AGU head i can get is about £Two-Hundred quid. and the Inlet manifold for about £50. So, Is it worth it for 10 - 15 BHP?. And then i suppose i'll have to get it mapped because it will be a bit lean?

To be honest im not the best person to speak to about mods and if there worth it lol the ammount of money i have spent lately!

But i would be very suprised if you saw even a 5 bhp increase with just the head and inlet so for the money its not worth it if they can just fix yours back up.  You would be better off saving the £250 that it would cost to get AGU head and inlet and buy a ABD small port inlet from awesome.  You would see more gains from the ABD inlet

Hmm, Maybe. I'll see what they say about my head i suppose and then make a decision

Yea mate i reckon thats your best option. When did they say they were going to have a good look at it?

Monday, Simon is going to put the oil cooler from his car on it and see if it cures it.

The only reason AGU's top most AUMs with same turbo is because they are apparently easier to map as they have less sensors and stuff holding them back.

And you can still run an AGU with vvt you just need to swap the tensioner / sensor thingbob from the AUM head which is what im doing.

When AD let me know whats happening do you think i should just stick with my head if it isnt Cracked?

Well if you can get a AGU head and inlet for cheap enough then i would probably go with that and use the bits from your head to get the vvt to work.  And as for the injectors im sure A D would be able to get them to fit
