me, again.
not having DSG so £1,300 better off - choices:
save the money
or
get leather (only about £1,300 because I'd be cancelling winter pack and that cost would be coming back to me - just getting for seat heaters which come for 'free' with the leather)
or
ACC (note, very little motorway driving - some - mostly 'flat' suburban roads and around town
and/or
sunroof - does it really bring a noticeable difference into the look and feel of the car?
I just don't think my driving calls for me to have Xenons - not much night driving and, even when I do, it's motorway, not really country roads etc - otherwise, just around town.
Sat Nav is a waste of dosh - Tom Tom...
looks like save it or spend a bit on sunroof...?
-
I'd like a sunroof. I really like the novelty of my Mk2's sunroof.
But how long will you have to wait for a car to be built with one? Leather and ACC are "bolt on's" a sunroof may be a different matter.
-
didn't think of that - I'll be ordering in the next few days and want delivery 1 March '10 - I wouldn't wait for more than an extra 3 or 4 weeks - not important enough...thnx!
-
LEATHER!
no contest in my opinion.
-
virtually ruled it out - 'jac' cloth has the character, ages better than sagging, creased, perhaps ripped leather - the leather wont stand up to 'family life' useage as well as cloth - thnx for the opinion, anyway...
-
ACC and sunroof definitely. Sunroof makes the car bright and airy and allows a good throughput of air when you're not using A/C.
I'd think ACC would be a bonus for driving the family around town - I thought in normal and comfort modes it takes the edge of the hard suspension when you are potterng around.

I agree fully, the cabin at the back in particular is quite dark so the sunroof will give a little extra light to the 3 kids.
Don't touch leather, childrens shoe buckles come to mind, scratches and rips anyway the cloth looks the business.
Think you'd better go and order this car mate or something else will come into your head and you will never make up your mind. Good luc James.

I'd order as soon as possible if you want the car for March 1st.
btw, save the money
-
For me, in a luxo-barge leather is all but essential. In a hatch, not so much...
I'd go for the ACC and not bother with the sunroof. :lipsrsealed:
-
I like the idea of a sunroof...I've had a couple over the years - and I like the extra light it lets in.
Having said that - I never used it on any of my cars!!!
ACC - I picked it, and most of my driving is around town. The car as standard has sports suspension. I want the option of going a bit softer for my trips back and forth to work on the pot hole roads. Then when I want to hammer it, I'll set it to sport!
Leather - to me seems like a lot of money. Cloth seats look good. They don't have the same 'executive' feel - but so what... its not really an executive car.
Xenons - make a huge difference for night driving and look better in general. £1000 better?! Tough call really. My MK5 ones were £750ish, and I paid for them. My R comes with them as standard - if it didn't I'd probably still buy them!
Sat Nav - get a second hand one off eBay for £500-600 and fit it yourself in 20 mins. Not THAT expensive then, and looks much better than the standard offering!
-
i would use the extra cash for the xenons (if you havent already), maybe go for the sunroof, but I would definately put aside £600 for a Sat Nav unit from fleabay!!
-
save your money and don't get either.....
I haven't got any of them but had them all on my scirocco, don't miss any of them at all.
-
I'm not convinced the options make that much difference to the delivery time.
At the risk of being smacked for repeating this again, my 8th July order showed up as advertised 10 weeks later, and that included a sunroof.
I really like the sunroof, and I'd recommend it over ACC any time (I've got both).
Rolfe.
-
Hi.
Regarding the sunroof:
If you've got kids sitting in the back, I'd 100% get a sunroof.
IMO (based on test driving one with and one without on same day), the GTI mk6 has them tinted windows in the back, and the sunroof car let in a lot more might, the glass roof made a world of difference in terms of light. Our little test driver in the back pref'd with sunroof so we opt'd for one (also the light in the car did make it IMO a nicer place to be). In terms of drop in the hight of the roof, I'm 6' 2" and no problem there (our current mk5 has a sunroof and it was a no-brainer option for me). Dealer also added a lot of people with kids opting for the 5 doors car also spec the sunroof for the same reason which was interesting. It's made no difference to our delivery for 100% on for 1st March.
-
Sunroof and xenons, ACC just a gimick  if the gti suspension wasn't good enough already why spoil it for silly gimicky stuff...more things to go wrong
The xenons make the front of the car and they look awesome on the new golf with that little cowl over the top of the xenon.

I agree re the ACC. I couldn't really tell the difference about town or on motorway with ACC in comfort or normal (which is apparantly close to the normal GTI set-up). I asked for a car with and a car without to test as was considering changing my order.
However this was just my opinion, I was glad the dealer was able to get 2 cars for me to try against each other. I'd strongly recomend that if your able to, would then a least give you some direction (was comfort setting I was interested in vs the a "normal" GTI set-up car without ACC). I couldn't really tell the difference about town or on motorway, but each to their own. Try before you buy
-
The ACC will feel the same in Normal and Comfort when you are bumbling around town at 30mph or cruising on a motorway because in Normal mode it is constantly adjusting the damping to suit - i.e. it's more than likely going to be selecting the more comfort-oriented settings in those conditions. Get it out on the open road and chuck it into some corners and then it'll firm up.
I'm sure the standard suspension presents a perfectly adequate compromise though and if you properly driven a car with and a car without, you can make an informed choice.
-
I read the golf's steering is speed dependent anyway and stiffens up the faster it goes.
I can certainly feel mine stiffen up if I'm belting along country roads and I don't have ACC.
-
Can someone explain whether a car with ACC, set to normal, is actually different from a car without ACC? I didn't notice anything much about this in the VW literature - I thought the ACC just gave you the two extra settings. However, several posts on this forum suggest it's not as simple as that.

The proper VW name for ACC is actually DCC - Dynamic Chassis Control - which gives you a better idea of what it is doing when it is left in Normal mode. Comfort obviously selects the softest setting on the dampers (and reduces the resistance in the steering at low speeds). Sport selects the hardest settings for greater body control and steering feel.
In Normal mode the system is actively adjusting the dampers (and steering) based on various things like steering angle, throttle position, suspension movement, body roll. It is not an 'average' setting, it is a constantly varying setting. So if you driving along the high street at 30mph it will be closer to or in comfort mode. If you are hurtling round a corner it'll be closer to or in sport mode. At other times it might be somewhere in between - maybe the average which you assumed.
Not the mere 'gimmick' some claim it to be. More reading can be found on the suspension manufacturers website here: http://www.tenneco.com/media/uploads/pdfs/A3_CES_GB_3.pdf (http://www.tenneco.com/media/uploads/pdfs/A3_CES_GB_3.pdf)
My understanding of the standard non-ACC suspension is that the fixed-rate dampers are somewhere in between the sport and comfort 'limits' - i.e. the 'average' setting.
-
But how long will you have to wait for a car to be built with one?
looking at order to build dates for August/september/october/november there seems no relationship between the amount of options or any option to the build date given. As an example the only option i have is Xenons as you say a bolted on bit were as others have the works and gone to town we are all given similar build week dates.
-
Im not bothered about reading page after page of science on the ins and outs of ACC  the GTi is renowned for its flexibility around town and its pouse and agility when pushing on.The more driver aids on the gti there is detracks from the overall drive, I.e the Mitsi evo used to be a right car in the version 5-6 after that it was just gizmo after gizmo...I drove my mates evo10-360 the other month around silverstone and dont get me wrong it was the quickest car point to point Ive been in but it just felt num.
Personally with argument I would go xenons, sunroof, RNS510(ebay) rear camera and lux pack.

Would that be why many people (including me) sat they don't feel a huge difference when switching between normal and comfort (for example)? Because the car is tending to go there anyway, when road conditions are appropriate for the comfort setting?
My test drive was in a non-ACC car, but to be honest it wasn't much of a drive - just a tootle along an urban stretch of the A71 and back to base. I suspect you'd have to drive two different cars a lot to notice just how much difference the ACC makes (or doesn't make).

Hi, Darren
Thnx - you saying that the front of the car looks different with the Xenons when they are off (obviously different when they're on!)
hardly anyone says get leather - I don't need it in a hot hatch - ACC (or DCC more correctly) pointless for me - looks like sunroof is good.
So yes to sunroof but Xenons?! No country driving, only night driving is local and suburban...
-
James, FFS make your own mind up mate..........
What do YOU need on YOUR car? That's the question.
-
Of course, gossa, the whole thing is very personal - you are so right
-

Well hurry up and make your decisions so we can all tell you how good it will be when it eventually turns up!
-
James, take your time and start as many threads as you like! Choosing the options you want is half the fun of getting a car like this, and the forum is a great resource to help you decide. Nobody has to read it or respond if they don't want to. Others enjoy reliving the pleasure of deciding what to have, vicariously.
Rolfe.
-
You could simply do what i did.
I made a list of the options i would like. It came to about 13 options iirc.
I then sat down and worked out over a matter of days what i really needed or was it just a male thing and i wanted it. I kept saying to myself do i really miss somthing on my present car that i must have it on the new one. Is there somthing from past cars i really miss.
You will be amazed how quickly you start crossing things off the list.
-
Thanks, Rolfe - appreciated!
-
Thnx, Snoopy - I'm pretty well there now - what's the xenon thing for you? Does it make the front of the car look different, a thousand quid different?!
-

AHHH!! Ya killing me!!!!
Have you been to a VW dealership and looked at all the options in the metal? What do YOU think of the Xenons? Do you live in an area where YOU would benefit from them? If not don't buy them unless YOU like the look of them or YOUR budget is flexible.
Like Rolfe says, ask as many q's as you need and we are all here to help but it sounds like you're either extremely indecisive or you haven't been and had a good look at the cars? Like Snoop says, make a list.
I'm different to most people, I went to the dealership in June and asked what cars were built and ready to go within a week and I took my choice from what was there. Did I get everything I wanted if I had sat and made a list? No but I have added that since (RCD510) but I realise there aren't as many cars built and ready now. If I was speccing and waiting I would have gone for Xenons as I do a lot of driving late at night on country roads but none had xenons so I just upgraded my bulbs, not as good but good enough.
-
Thnx, Snoopy - I'm pretty well there now - what's the xenon thing for you? Does it make the front of the car look different, a thousand quid different?!
No but i live in the the middle of the coutryside miles from anywere, in the wet north so i spend alot of time on small rural unlit roads each week. I also spend alot of my weekends traveling up and down the country for one of my hobbies so spend alot of time on unlit motorways. One of the only must haves on my list for my mk6 thats not on our mk5 was headlamp washers, the lights get far too dirty far too quickly and reduce visability on our mk5 imo. Our mk5 has ok lights since i changed the bulbs but i decided to go that extra step after using cars from work that have xenons. Its the only option in the end i went for though except metallic paint and 5doors.
-
Thnx - gossa, you right - I've had 3 test drives, 2 DSG, 1 manual - but it is all personal - I remember one time when I was thinking of a new car, loads of car mags etc and questions.....etc...saw Clarkson reviewing an RX8, I hadn't considered it, Clarkson loved it - I test drove it the next day and ordered it straight after the drive - that was surreal.
-
Absolutely great for you, Snoopy, pointless for me - thnx
-
In all honesty I think every new car should come with xenons...I have a mk5 golf and have been wanting to retrofit the xenons for ages. I managed to get hold of some and fitted them and the difference is really night and day and I think the mk6 is the same.
Xenons make the front of the car my last car was the new Focus ST225-spec2 and xenons where standards on that and they were excellent same has the R32 the R20 will probably have xenons has standards aswell.
It wont quite count for you yet cos your just buying your car but come resale time you will see the return on your xenons compared to a car without xenons. Its what alot of people look for first these days
Darren
-
James, brill car those RX8's, if the oil and fuel consumption weren't so bad i might have bought one when I bought the scirocco.
So, tick Xenons off your list then, now we're getting somewhere!!!!!
-
Thnx, D - how do Xenons alter the look of the front of the car
-
Well, just for another point of view.
I live in the country and do a lot of driving on unlit country roads. Every time I see a set of xenons coming towards me I want to take the driver, screw his head off, and stuff it down his windpipe.
I didn't spec them for my own car, funnily enough.
Rolfe.

If only the choir knew your darker side!!!
-
ha ha ha nice thread... If I had a choice and money and purpose was not an issue including delivery times, I would have gotten the following specs:
Candy White - You only live once
Xenons - To blind Rolfe
5 doors - Kids
18" Monzas - To be different than Rolfe
Park Distance - For the women drivers
Rear Camera - To impress my mates
RNS510 - To deafen me and to find myself around
Dynaaudio - To help me go deaf
Lux Pack - Need to fold the damn side mirrors
Winter Pack - To warm my arse...
DCC - To pamper the car
Cloth seats - Leather is too difficult to maintain...
-
The xenons make the front look more aggressive compared with halogens.

Darren
Well, seeing the damn things come towards me makes me feel quite aggressive, so you may have a point there. I think it's the ones where the driver, having dipped the lights (to just almost-blinding) then miscalculates the switch-on point and gives me a blazing eyfull just before our cars pass who annoy me most.
But they're all offensive.
Rolfe.

Now, now calm down dear!! me thinks this is just a tad of jealousy lol :grin xenons look the bees knees, the cats whiskers and any other superlative you can think of, xenons are fine if used properly.

Thnx, D - how do Xenons alter the look of the front of the car
I think Xenons are a must, Looks, Visability, They turn with the steering and they do a cool dance when switched on, up/down side/side

Have heard some non-scientific evidence recently that the ACC dampers work much better when fully bedded in. Mate with a Passat CC mentioned that he thought his ACC was broken when compared to the 12 month old demonstrator he test drove.

Neil
where are the xenons in the pic?
Where did you get the wheels - order them as part of spec when you ordered the car?

 The xenons are the complete headlight units, normal headlights look totally different
The wheels are from VW Racing not ordered with the car

James, look at the front of my car and compare the shape of the Neils, can you see all of the internals of the headlamps have a completely different shape? The Xenons look more pointy and 'grrrr''!!!
I really think you need to go back to the dealership and spend all day there comparing cars/lights/gearboxes and make that list!
-
^^ yes i think you need to get a bit more information from dealer and compare different options, get him to explain them to you
before you make your decision
-
I went through the options and made my mind up these are what i came too (why i deleted them my own personal reasons)
It was not a financial one i could have easily got them all but if i felt there was no point why not use that money for something else
5 door (i like the smaller doors easier to get in and out in car parks easier to give friends and family lifts)
DSG (I still cannot get on with it after 4 years of it on our car at work, It makes choices i would not and in traffic i don't feel in control)
Auto hold function (gimmic for people who cannot drive was my view)
Cruise control (I can hold it at a steady speed for hours also it was cheaper retro fitted for the mk5 so i would not be suprised if its the same again. I never seemed to use it much on past cars)
Xenons inc headlamp washers. (nearly did not go for them and was just going for headlamp washers)
Monza Shadows (White worm and corrosion also they do look a bit chav and halfords to me much prefer the monza IIs)
Tyre presure monitor (not the most reliable indicator from experience with my mk5 i can tell before it did.)
ACC (ruled out as will be very costly to replace when the dampers start to go soft around the 50K mark, i will own this car 10+ years i hope)
Winter pack (never since the mid to late 80s have i needed heated washer jets and even then it did not stop the pipes freezing. Heated seats felt no need with cloth had them before with cloth never used them. Headlamp washers i feel i need due to the amount of muck that gets stuck to the front of our mk5 on motorways)
Luxury pack (Folding door mirrors i don't need and i know local youths if the car is parked at the side of the road anywere the folding mirrors attract them to try and pull them off!. Puddle lights i felt no need for i never used them on my other cars in the past. Tilting passenger mirror i quite liked the idea of but when reversing out of my drive i cannot see the gates in that mirror when it tilts i can move and do the job manually if im worried that much)
Storage pack Underseat draws and 2 luggage nets. (I did not seem to use the net on the mk5 and the draws i can live without.)
Metallic paint (simply down to colour choice this one for me)
DAB/DVD satnav/ RCD510/Dynaudio (i thought about it just for the DAB arial especially as come 2012 analogue will be switched off. One of my hobbies is sound quality car audio so i ruled out all audio upgrades as i can do a better job aftermarket.
Telephone prep (Small number of phones it will work with)
Park assist+F&R sensors/Parking sensors/rear view camera(i can park and am able to drive our mk5 fine so cannot see why this will not be the same with our mk6, anyway the sensors flatline far too early)
Side airbag rear seats with seatbelt warning (our mk5 will be the main family car so ruled these out and i would hope i never wish i had them)
Leather (two of the cars i test drove had leather and i liked the smell! but our mk5 at work has leather and its sagged, creased and its gone very shiny it does not look good at all to me and looking at other mk5s it seems a common problem.)
Sunroof (I do like how it lets extra light in to such a dark cabin and it was the last options i crossed off. The reasons were i carry a few 6ft5+ friends often and they can struggle in cars with sunroofs the more headroom the better both front and rear. Also the blind can rattle, + i can crack the rear window to let air in alittle on a 5door.)
All the above are my OWN views everyone elses will be different please no one take offence, thank you.
-
I find the Dsg a lot smoother and no where near as indecisive as the box that was on my mk5 R32
Mk5 was gearing down into 1st when slowing down for junctions etc when you didnt want it too,(making it look that you cannot drive) Mk6 i havn't had any problems much more civilised imo, great piece of kit
-
thnx, Snoopy!
What is white worm?
Did you order your car with those wheels?
If it's your main family car, isn't that reason for having rear side airbags? (although there are plenty of analysts in the car safety field who say they are dangerous near kids, that they protect adults but can injure kids.
Audio - I don't know much about it so assume that £350-odd is pretty cheap for an upgrade which will be good enough for me.
Xenons - pointless for me.
Thnx again!

White worm.
The 18" monza shadows have a top surface that is a machined than lacured finished rather than painted or powdercoated like other alloys are. What happens is over time either the lacure is breached (stone chip etc or with tempuratures the metal expands and shinks more than it does or it becomes more brittle with the heat, it also does not bond to the metal very well so it can lift in places especially the edges. These problems cause whats known as 'white worm' (see photo below)
This only effects a polished/lac or machined/lac finished type wheel it does not effect the powdercoated finish on the 17" standard wheels.
VW will replace wheels that suffer this under warrenty as long as it was not caused by curbing etc but after 3 years your on your own. Which is why i did not go for them. I did not go for the optional 18" shadow wheels i went for the standard powdercoated 17s i went for function over looks for the wheels so i get less hassle.
Family car,
The mk6 will be my own commuter car. Our family car is a mk5 that my other half has. This is why i did not go for the rear airbags also theres an another reason that only effects me and that is for one of my hobbies im into soundquality car audio getting all the cables from the rear of the car to the front is far far far far far far far easier if the rear side seat airbags are not fitted.
Audio,
I have said in quite a few threads for the money and an oem upgrade i rate the dynaudio tonality and think for what you get ie dynaudio speakers etc its a bargin at the price VW are doing it.
My order,
My order was very basic in the end i went for a manual 5door + Shadow Blue metallic paint + Xenon Headlights(that inc headlamp washers).
I came to the conclusions as i said above, of i may what something, but after sitting down and thinking about it logically for days i did not really need it or probably use it much at all if i had got it, so 99.9% got crossed off my list. You could say as my wife says i treated myself with the xenons rather than the winterpack (to get the headlamp washers)
-
Thnx, Snoopy
White worm - yuk? Standard 17's don't do that? - your wheels look very different - aren't they black?
Rear side airbags - I understand your decision - my mark 6 wouldn't be family car so could go for my preferred 3 door (no disrespect to 5 dr owners) - I read tougher body shell which is good if kids are in the back
thnx, again
-
surely VW must be fixing that issue due to the high numbers buying the 18" Monza shaddows?
Thats very very poor otherwise
-
Thnx, Snoopy
White worm - yuk? Standard 17's don't do that? - your wheels look very different - aren't they black?
No the 17s do not suffer this as they are painted or a powdercoated finish.
The photo i posted is of a 18" monza II wheels fitted to the mk5 GTI, the only difference is the gray inner sections on the monza II are black on the Monza Shadows as fitted to the mk6 but the outer surface is the same.
Jellycat,
You cannot fix it. Its a problem that every wheel with that type of finish suffer eventually over time its because lacquer is directly applied to a metal finish rather than a painted one. You would think VW/Audi/SEAT would have learnt from past problems with this type of wheel finish. As they have had problems with wheels with this type of finish since the 80s!!
-
Thnx, Snoopy - I might stick with 17's - if I get 18's, when would ww be likely to first appear - any idea as to cost of replacement of 18'' Monza Shadows?
-
When, that seems to depends on alot of things. I had it on the mk5 wheels after about 2 years and as soon as it starts it speads like weeds. Some have not had it in 4 years. Some have suffered with it within months. Anal care of the wheels is the key regular waxing and cleaning. I also think location and weather have a huge impact on when it happens. VW will replace them for you in the 3 year warrenty period.
After that you can get them refurbed at a cost of £55-£100 a wheel depending were your at, the really good recomended places normally charge ~£100 a wheel.
-
Major difference in looks between car with 17's and car with 18'?
-
Personally, I think the Mk6 looks wrong on 17's - they are too small. I'd get the 18's and look after them. Then when they get ugly, have them refurbed but in a painted finish like the 17's rather than machined/laquered. A clever man will get this done by VW under warranty, so there is no additional cost.
-
You're right, Mac - I'll look after them but I wouldn't have the patience to look after leather, the treating, the conditioning - cloth requies no work and holds it's look
-
Right then James
What's your final spec? ordering this week? come on put us out of our misery, tell us your placing your order tomorrow!!!

A bit of advise i will give is whatever you choose as options be it leather, paint colour, wheels, lights do not base your decision on any photos you have seen. As the difference between real life and photos is huge when it comes to things to do with the mk6 for some reason.

It may well be a Monday 16th order - watch this space for final spec - there may be some surprises, some choices against the run of play...

James
Getting excited for you mate, you are going to be so thrilled with your car that any options you may have thought of and knocked off won't matter a jot.
All the best

Thnx, GW - much appreciated!

So James can you tell us what you think you'll be ordering? I think we deserve to know considering all the help!
-
Indeed you do, Gossa, but I think I'll let you all know when the order is in or you'll all have your say again (I appreciate with the best of intentions) and it'll all start again -

Good luck with the order James!
