My heart just sank! 32k is just too much for me.

Currently have a mkiv R32 and never upgraded because i could never find a car worth upgrading to. MKV was good, but didn't thing it was worth spending the extra money.

Looks like a GTi for me then.

What happened to our free parking sensors / rcd510 update / ACC that was talked about.
Although we're a LOT cheaper than Germany, it seems our 'extras' have gone

I'm still unsure about which colour to go for...
I'm at almost £33k - and then retrofit my RNS510 and Fiscon kit... then sell the RCD510 I had to update to so I could have a reverse cam!

Agreed i was hoping for some of the goodies included!
but i guess we'll have to make do with the bigger turbo, xenons, latest version of 4 motion and exclusivity

Makes the GTI with 5k of extras and a revo remap look like a bargain !

As to residuals if few new ones are sold due to the price then the market for used ones will be a very limited one until the prices become sensible - the more you pay the more you lose !!

Mmmmmmmmmmmmm.

A 5 door DSG with all the option boxes ticked  = £40,845.

£41K for a Golf!!!!!!! That is madness.

Like the fact they are offering black alloys as a factory option.

Even at the base price, ACC is an option. Am I also right in thinking that the RCD 510 is an option too?

Especially when a basic golf costs 14k. I would rather have a 14k model and spend the £27k on mods

Comparing new to used is such a stupid arguement. I could spend £15K on a Fiat 500 Abarth, but wow that's also Porsche 911 money.

Agreed and point taken. I was just trying to put across the point that for that amount of money, I feel its better spent getting some more car for it as I feel this new Golf R is about 3 to 4k over priced.

If there is a limited run of 500 then for those of you buying new that will at least help with risiduals.

But... I got a brand new Mk5 R32 in November 2008 for a smidgeon over £20K. Same spec Mk6 R is £35K. Crazy!

But who cares? Only money and as previously stated, limited run should help with residuals.

My dealer claims the R is special order, where it has to be faxed direct to VW.

As the R is a "halo" car, I assume VW will want it parading round the roads of the UK ASAP... so hopefully they'll pull a few GTD/GTI build slots so we get one as soon as!

EDIT: Dealer also claims that, due to limited run, no demostrators... so those waiting for a test drive could be waiting a while.

Personally I think anyone that pays that much money for the R is INSANE !

As someone else mentioned, get yourself a GTI with ALL the toys and a remap and you will as much as makes no difference be just as quick as the R yet still have 7 odd grand in the bank for beer and strippers. Its a lot of money for "exclusivity". If you want that buy a Mondeo ST220 as Clarkson pointing out there are less of them than there are DB9s.

I thought VW would play this one better, and come in at just over Focus RS money, but thats plain stupid.

GTi for me, and TBH I'm very tempted now to get the official VWR remap and exhaust + induction for £1500.

As for the new to used comment, totally agree however a mate has just bought a 12 month old M3 for £41k and you could never compare it to the golf, and its mint. 2 months on the road with the Golf R and they would both be in the used bracket!

VW dont half know how to make their on monopoly !

They know people with MK6 dont want to invalidate their warranty so charge them a quite frankly prisonable price for a remap, sports exhaust (not even turbo back !!!) and bigger CAI. I dont blame you for going via VWR as it keeps your warranty but it makes me sick that VW take the piss like this.

Base price is what was expected and already on the high side but just about palatable - but seriously 35-40k for a well specced one is just plain silly. Golfs are great but only up to a point. The whole point for me is for a hot hatch to punch abover its weight for price and servicibility as the mk5 R32 and gti did/do.

Despite current market conditions this will have one very big anchor of depreciation dragging it down when those fortunate few who can afford it come to trade it in - but then if you can burn the money why not - your choice and not going to critcise anyone for it.

It will have the halo effect and kudos amongest all car fans but come trade the same old same old will happen - a spanking. Do not kid yourself - Selling price residuals will be strong - trade will still hurt particulaly if you buy new and sell in the first 2 years - it has happened with all VW's over a certain price and will continue to do so.

Will have one when theyre 20k - which wont be long.

3k for seats - seriously - leather not standard - acc not standard  -  gets worse as I type

"The Golf R 2.0 TSI 270PS 4Motion and Scirocco R 2.0 TSI 265PS 2WD open for ordering on Friday 30 October. As we expect production volumes for 2010 to be approximately 500 cars, these cars will only be available for sold customer orders.

Initial launch cars have been ordered and will be allocated shortly. Current production forecasts indicate that the first customer deliveries will be able to take place from March 2010. Please make sure customers are aware of the long lead times for these vehicles.

The UK test drive of the Scirocco R has already occured and there will be reports in the press from early November. The Golf R UK test drives are scheduled to occur in late November and we expect the reports to appear in the press from early January 2010."

Looks like despite being number one in the queue at my dealer, I'll still be waiting until 1st March 2010 - as if its not going to be arriving until Feb - whats the point in registering it a week or 2 early.

I don't know if the new VAT rate is on that prices or not - but VW has given dealers an extra 2.5% discount for the next few months to balance it out.

I wonder what sort of discount I'll be able to pick up tomorrow?  I'm guessing they'll give pretty much NOTHING!  I've got nothing to trade in... but in the current climate, that may work against me now.

For me its:
3 door
DSG
Reflex Silver
19" Black wheels
RCD510 with Dynaudio
Reverse Camera
Winter Pack
Parking Sensors
Luxury Pack

£32865

I'd love to order Recaros, but I can't justify £3080... hell... I can't even justify £1730 for normal leather.
I'd like ACC, but then I'll probably use it for the first week and never again - so its a bit of a waste.
I have an RNS510 to fit at home, but I HAVE to take the RCD510 if I want the reverse camera (which I do) so I'll do my retrofit and sell the RCD510.

All will be revealed tomorrow

Why get a Golf then? Don't get me wrong I love Golfs, but at that price (£41k) you can get more car and more prestige for your money than any Golf can give.

re: VAT, I took this from the VW website

"If you order a new Volkswagen before the 30th November 2009 and take delivery between the 1st January and 28th February 2010, we will give you a 2.5% discount on the pre VAT basic recommended retail price of the vehicle including any factory fitted options. "

I just specced my theoretical golf R and it came to £34k, thats about £6k more than my GTI, excluding discounts.  Biggest difference is the 4 wheel drive system and moer power.  Lookswise its fine, but I actually prefer the GTI with its tartan seats and red highlights.  18inch wheels actually don't look that great on the website, even rising blue looks awful on screen (though i'm sure its great in the flesh).

Standard kit a massive disappointment, no ACC, no leather, no RCD510, and park assist is not even an option
Title: Re: golf R prices and spec on website now!!
Post by: keelaw on 30 October 2009, 13:49
also, VW are quoting 5.5 - 5.7 secs for 0-62... that is pretty good, though still not Evo X quick

note the range is the old DSG vs Manual argument.  The DSG option in the R gives:

- 0.2 secs faster to 62mph
- better fuel economy on urban and combined measures
- lower CO2
- same top speed

I just priced my spec on the R and its come in at just under £33k  for a Golf!!, what are they smoking at VW UK. If it had a few options like the acc, cruise, 19s and even sat nav and priced it about £29k then I would said yes its worth it. I say one thing if it gets slated in the magazine road tests, then god help them shifting it at that price.  I will now be looking at the Audi TTS as that looks like a bargain compared with the Golf and I know for a fact I can get a discount on a TTS and it will hold its money even better than the Golf. Shame as I really wanted  one, but not at that price, VW UK are you listening!!

It will be a nice car but they are taking the pi$$, A big no from me at that price, should have cost about 26- 27k. MK5 R32 was £23745 against £19995 gti when first released the end of 2005

It doesn't matter if they're listening or not... there are people out there (like myself) stupid enough to pay for it - and if people are paying it, why would they reduce the prices.

£41k for a Golf isn't really realistic on any level - I doubt there is anyone out there who would actually tick EVERY box?!
My decent specced one will be £33k.  Its a little bit more than I was expecting (I was hoping for about £31k) - but I've waited this long.
Maybe I'll get a wee bit of discount

It's an expensive car. But thinking about only new cars (rather than second hand cars) and putting discounts to one side for a moment, what else can you get for £30K? Everything else I'm seeing with similar performance is around the same price or more expensive except the Impreza and Focus RS - and I don't want either of those on any level.

If it truly is to be a premium, limited edition model, then VW will just wait until someone willing to pay full whack comes in rather than give it away. It's not a 'bread-and-butter' model.

The S3 is also better equipped and you get double figure discounts on it unlike this golf Rich

Even at the crazy price, they will shift 500 units no problem.

Bear in mind that at least 50 of them will will go onto the VW UK company car scheme, so they'll be in dealers next autumn with sub 10k mileages and plenty of toys.

Out of of interest I just spec'd a scirroco to the same spec as the golf R I'm ordering
Why is the sat nav unit £400 cheaper
And why do they get the ACC included and the winter pack as standard?
A saving of just over a grand

ACC has always been standard on the UK Scirocco.  Not sure about the Sat Nav as its the same unit.  I was surprised at how expensive the Scirocco is anyway - so at least its getting a few options bunged in!

I've been looking through the Golf's 'standard' features trying to work out where the extra cash is going.  18" Wheels as standard instead of 17" on the GTI.  Xenon lights standard (£1000 on GTI).  4WD.  Bigger Brakes.  Flat Tyre Indicator.  Extra 55bhp.  Different bumpers / seats / R badges.  Is that it?!?!  :lipsrsealed:

I just can't get over the £3080 for Recaros!  On the S3 they're only £1500 - but then I suppose it starts with leather as standard.

Yep - the S3 does seem well priced against the Golf - but the S3 is damned ugly, and will be restyled next year.  The Golf should get about 3 years before a newer model!

I have not looked at what unit is standard in the golf R but most sciroccos come with the RCD510 as standard were as most golfs only get the RCD310 so that may account for the price difference.

Ouch! a tat expensive for a golf? It’s starting to sound like taking the biscuit when you add on some basic options and on that......

Noticed you get LED lights as standard on the R2, BUT FOR A £29,000 basic car, and then they CHARGE for cruise control AND worst of all ACC as an OPTION!!! For £29k and the fact it's a Golf R I'd expect ACC to be included!!!

The price for the GTI is ok (some say a little high but if you shop about you can get a good deal), but but the price for the Golf R is nuts, I don't think from the front even looks as good as the GTI. I even think the mark V R32 looks better (in blue) and would prob sounds better also.

I was at first toying with the idea of one of the last new R32 runs, a Mrk6GTI or wait for the R. When I got a heads up on the expected price of about £28k to £30k by a VW dealer I went for the Mark 6 GTI (which I think looks way better). My other non Golf option was for a 335i saloon (which ok cost more but with a couple of deals on the cards was not bad value, but I'm a kid at heart and wanted a hot hatch again but with 5 doors for the little one!

It's not can't afford a Golf R. It's actually the feeling getting ripped off which I don't like, and that's not what you're supposed to feel like in a car like the R. :angry

Just been reading about the Mugen Type R which they're bringing into production.  20 destined for the UK, at... wait for it... £39k!!

Golf R is a bargain!

Even so when you consider that you can spec the Mugen Type R to be just like the concept.... for £50k!!!

Manufacturers have gone doolally!

£50, for a Golf = dumb!

For that price you can get a couple of years old pre-facelift lambo gallardo (which if you're after something fast and cool then sorry no contest), also has isofix in the front, perfect for the nusery run!

If you need additonal seating(ish) = 911

The Golf R will be in the showrooms by the end of November at "major" dealers (in Sweden) .
First possible delivery earliest in March 2010.

Will surely be there for a test drive, report will follow.

Did you dare to ask for a discount (and did you get one?)

After I said it was a rip off, it's now burning a (little) hole in me, thinking hmmm my order for a GTI last weekend, do ask if I can swap it out? But then I look at the GTI and think, nah GTI looks way better than the Golf R from the front. Still I think I'll visit the local dealer again just to look at the GTI in the flesh (and hope the sales guy doesn't latch on to my thinking lol).
Don't think I'll budge from the GTI order, the Golf R price just makes me feel like a new a*ss hole being been ripped into me by VW at that price (the little tightwad in me).

Got to say interesting that people are slapping cash down without even a test drive seems brave, but hey if you want one then why not I guess!

But..... the new S3 is out next year (I hate the current S3, went to check it out before the GTI order, looks like someone with a Halfords charge card has maxed out their limit on the thing), and the dash looks like a huge blob of nasty plastic vs the Mk6 golf very nice interior.

I got a discount
It was only £500 and took a lot of doing - but I felt like I accomplished something!!
They've also agreed to pay HALF the VAT increase if the car arrives after the 28th Feb (which it will) as the VW offer only goes till the end of Feb.

I went into Audi today and asked them to spec me up an S3.  They gave me NINE percent discount off it!
The salesman told me they're expecting the new A3 at the end of 2010, and the S3 shouldn't be far behind as their last few 'sports' models have been released at the same time as the normal one (the new S4 was released at the same time as the A4 etc).

The S3 is too ugly - and with a replacement due very soon, its not the choice for me.  Sure, it would've been about £4k cheaper for almost the same car... but the Golf R will be the current model for a few years still - and hence will hold its value better.
Title: Re: golf R prices and spec on website now!!

I agree, the current S3 is bland from the outside and looks cheap inside. No wonder you can get good discounts, especially with the backdrop of the current Golf GTI and the spectre of a new model S3 next year(ish).

By the way, nice work on securing half of the VAT increase was a good move and worth (guessing) about £350, so that with the £500 token discount works out at about £800-£900 which is not bad work on a brand new model that people are putting cash down without a test drive, and has a very limited run! I recall you could sell an R8 just after delivery at a premium so any discount is very good work.

Even though it was only £500, I felt quite pleased with myself afterwards!
I also got them to agree to change the VagCom on my car to tell it I've got an RNS510 and Bluetooth before I drive it away - so I can retrofit them without having to worry about spending an extra £200 on a VagCom!

Its unlikely ANYONE who orders an R will get to test drive it according to the dealer today - as they are only allowed to order customer orders (as per the VW memo posted on here).  That means they can't order demonstrators, and with the limited 500 cars in the first year between about 260 VW dealers across the UK - most dealers will be getting 1 or 2, with the bigger dealers getting 3 / 4 each.

Its going to be a LONG next 4 months!  They can't even confirm a March 1st delivery yet - although he did seem to think that VW would 'open up' some slots for building R's to get some on the streets quicker.

Even if it did arrive in Feb, I'd be tempted to wait until March to get it.  Unfortunately I booked my annual snowboarding holiday a couple of months ago, so I'll be in Canada from 24th Feb - 4th March 2010... so I'll miss the release (IF its the 1st March!).

Regarding "Even if it did arrive in Feb, I'd be tempted to wait until March to get it"
If you do get the car in Feb and therefore a 59 reg, VW should pick up the VAT due to the date you put your order in, so dealer should pass on or is the Golf R excluded? So if they went halfs with you make sure you get March 1st to max out the saving and also the new reg (sure that will impact the resale price in 3 years time).
Title: Re: golf R prices and spec on website now!!

or is the Golf R excluded?

ALL VW cars are included in the VAT deal - but its only for orders placed before 31st November - which arrive between 1st Jan and 28th Feb 2010.

I'd rather pay half the VAT (probably about £350) and get a '10 plate than a '59 plate.
Its VERY unlikely I'll have to make the choice anyway as I doubt it will be in time for a March 1st collection

I have a different view i think the quality of the interior is superior to the golf and the car looks far more aggressive from the front. It also come with far more equipment like leather for example. At the prices you can get them at ~£25K its GTI money never mind R money. Each to there own though but if i was an S3 owner and the new R turns out to drive very similar i would be laffing my back off at every R i spotted on the road.

Just before you put your deposit down on the high priced Golf R..... Check out the following!!!

I wondered what will happen about the S3 etc with such a quick Golf R (as would expect Audi S2 to be quicker as it's supposed to be the upmarket version etc.), and found the following regarding RS3... 2.5 turbo based on the TTRS
http://www.caradvice.com.au/27764/2010-audi-rs3-spied-at-nurburgring/
http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/Secret-new-cars/Search-Results/Spyshots/Audi-RS3-2010-spy-photos/

If that's the case oooo..... and if the starting price is about the £30k\£32k mark (I would expect a little more than the Golf R) then with performance figures like the TTRS then  Hmmmmm...... Guessing release date is a wile off so As this point, I'm going to still sticking with the GTI on order, but will check out the RS3 when its released. Me thinks about 335bhp with a 0 to 62 in 4.6 seconds for a 5 door hatch back that's also wrapped in a fairly descreet looking and would give an M3 and Focus RS's one hell of a shock!!

only problem jelly is that it's an 'outgoing model', you'd be gutted six months later to see the 'all new A3 platform'. Agree though, that'll be a hell of a car! Imagine that remapped to nearly 400bhp!!!

I took my neighbor to collect her TT yesterday, The customer service from Audi locally makes VW look horrendous. They had an S3 sportback in there and it did look awesome.....still prefer my GTI though....

The dealer yesterday told me that the new A3 is due at the end of 2010.
When I said - I guess the S3 will follow a few months later, he said no - and that the A4 and S4 were released at the same time, and the new A5 / S5 were released at the same time too.

£32k - NO DANGER... it'll be £35-38k basic... as the TTS -> TTRS jump was massive!!

I wonder if the RS3 spotted was actually a test mule using the current shape, and that the RS3 will come out after the new style A3 is launched end of 2010? Front photo on renders seem to be like of the Golf R.

Regarding a release date, I doublt that the VW Audi Group would launch the RS3 so soon after the Golf R (as if you're happy to spend £30k-35k on a hatch back, and you can get a 0-62 in 4.5 second then for a couple of k more then its a no brainer as that's serious performance and would sound fantastic and I guess reminiscent of the R32 (which would be an excellent thing). Mind you wonder if that would that mean prices drop on the Golf R and demand drops off as the money shifts to the RS3?

Got to say I was offered a mad discounted price on a new S3 for slightly more than my spec'd up GTI which is on order, but the interior on the S3 seemd to me like a cheap after market look!!! but each to their own! (also sorry Halfords!)

If they do release a sports back version in early 2011 (as sounds like 5 doors come a few months later), hmmmm might eat my own words about spending 35k-38k on a hatch back!

I always thought the money i spent on my GTi was the absolute limit I'd spend on a VW so £28k plus is really daft money no matter how nice the car is.
I lived in Germany for a year and to the Germans a VW is an everyday runabout - it has no status whatsoever as opposed to the way they view Mercedes, BMWs and Jags. It's only in this class obsessed country that we seem to view VW as a "prestige" marque so VW seem to think they can charge whatever they like and the badge snobs will buy them. Unfortunately in this country they will so people like us on here end up paying through the nose for a car we're buying cos it's the best car to drive rather than the snob value.
Someone will no doubt mention the fact that the R is just as expensive in Germany as it is here. Yes, but the Germans won't buy it either at that price.
Interestingly I was in Berlin this week in the rather posh Western part of Charlottenburg. VWs were very thin on the ground. Saw loads of prestigious marques - Merc, BMW, Jag, Porsche, Bentley etc. In fact I only saw one Mk 6 GTi all week.
Personally for £30k or so I'd be looking at a powerful BMW or similar - at least something that said "I've spent £30k"!!!! Sorry if that's shallow but there you go.
I do, however, wish those who do choose to buy an R all the very best - I don't begrudge your choice for a minute as I'm sure it's an awesome car.

I'm the opposite!  I want something that blends into the background with subtle styling - but looks like every other Golf!  The R fits this perfectly.
I wouldn't feel anxious about leaving a Golf R in a car park as it doesn't scream 'steal me'!
I'm sure 95% of the people at my work will just think its another Golf... and thats the way I like it.

Interesting you don't mention Audi in your selection of "premium" marques...

Agree there is a lot of nice machinery out there for this kind of money, but I needed a car that was golf-sized so my wife was comfortable driving it.

An S3 Sportback with a few goodies was attainable after a decent discount for similar money as my GTI, and with 4WD and a sub 6 second 0-60 it was very tempting, but it would also cost more to run and ultimately was too dated a design.

That also used to be the case in Germany when they were used cos they lasted for gazillions of miles. It didn't stop them being seen as prestigious cars by most Germans.
Interestingly nowadays however, German taxis are all sorts of makes so that suggests that Mercs no longer have that cast iron superbly engineered reputation they used to have.
I do also take your point p3 about the subtlety of the R. Although with 19 inch wheels I'm not convinced it's as subtle as you'd like. And, unfortunately, the c**ks who are likely to nick such cars will spot it a mile off, as indeed they will a GTi.

I hadn't forgotten about Audi. The Germans do see Audi as a posh VW so if they wanted prestige they would always buy them rather than VW.

So you'll have noticed the Germans are the most status-conscious of the whole EU. Badge snobbery is a way of life out there and they are far worse than the Brits.

Haven't you just agreed with what I was saying then Mac? That was the whole point of the post i.e. they wouldn't buy a VW out of some misguided notion it's a prestige car. They buy them as a family runaround. In this country we perceive VWs as "upmarket". I suspect because they're German.
Title: Re: golf R prices and spec on website now!!

We perceive VW's as prestige because they have better build quality and an upmarket finish compared to fords, vauxhalls, toyotas, subarus, fiats .... The list goes on

Hmmm. I probably have just agreed with you.   I'll try harder to argue next time.

I think the Germans will buy the R. Both 20-somethings who want the fastest hatch out and 40-somethings who are heading for their mid-life (crisis).

I also agree that VW's are just mass produced work-a-day family cars and today the 'prestige' is mostly down to perception. Here in the UK we have had such a poor history of indigenous offerings there hasn't been much else to choose from. Ford and Vauxhall get the 'working class' vote, French cars are for peasants (no offence) so back in the 80's VW in the UK were well placed to position their products a bit futher upmarket. That position has endured.

Unless you like Jap crap, I guess.

We perceive VW's as prestige because they have better build quality and an upmarket finish compared to fords, vauxhalls, toyotas, subarus, fiats .... The list goes on

No they don't, we just think they do.

Remember, I had 2 Mark 4s which I bought on the back of showroom appeal, interior quality etc. Regulars on here know they were the worst cars I've ever had. The first one reached a total of 17 simultaneous faults at one point. The second one nearly killed me with failing wipers (3 times I might add on the A1, M62 and M1). Thus, my falling out with VW and my daliance with Saab over the last few years.
Regulars will also know that I've had Vauxhalls ever since 1991 when I got my first car and they've consistently been more reliable than those Mark 4s and the Mk 3 GTi I had before them. The Mark 4s did teach me to buy cars on the way they drove and not the way they felt inside. However, when I sold the second Mark 4 I made the mistake of driving the brand new (at that point) Mk 5 GTi and I was blown away with it. I always wanted one but couldn't forgive VW for the crap Mk4s. After several years, however, my anger has abated and so I returned to the Mk 6.
The one thing I couldn't ever deny (especially to me as a private owner) was the high residuals I always got with the VWs. I bought Vauxhalls because I got big discounts through my GM card and the wife getting GM Partner discounts and this made up for the loss of value when I sold them. The Mk4 that nearly killed me retained an unbelievable amount of money at the time so financially the VWs make sense to me. But that's only because this perception of quality perseveres.
My experience in reality though suggests this reputation for quality isn't deserved. Time will tell with the new one.

Andycram sounds like you've had bad luck but I'm sure the vast majority of VW owners have had better experiences ... I had the mk5 gti for 3 yrs with no problems at all, I sold that and bought a brand new audi RS4 avant which I had for the last 2 yrs... This car needed a new engine, and new suspension on 3 separate occasions under warranty. I was unlucky with that car ( which I still loved regardless) but that experience would not make me think all Audi's are poorly built!
Title: Re: golf R prices and spec on website now!!

I agree. It was just that the wiper thing was so scary and so badly handled by the dealer (they just kept putting new wiper motors in when it was clearly some sort of electrical fault) that I really had it with VW at the time. I always liked the cars I just wasn't prepared to have another at that time.
This GTi though is awesome and is everything I want in a car. Everyone I know loves it too which means no doubt I'll get good money for it eventually when I sell it.
The other thing that persuaded me to return was the reputation the Mark 4 seems to have as VW's poorest effort in recent years. I've read lots of reports that the Mark 5 was miles better so I'm optimistic about my new one.

One other thing - every single fault I ever had with the Mark 4s were either electrical or trim related. The oily bits never gave me a problem at all.

Have to admit, my Mk4 had the most problems of any car I've owned - coil packs, random computer messages warning of low oil level, idling issues, throttle body, brake light switch. All fixed though and still going strong at 99,000 miles in my Dad's hands now.

Mac7 -  40-somethings who are heading for their mid-life?

Lol golf is far too sensible for a mid live crisis! Most guys I know in 40's that either have had or are in the process of having a mid life crisis, seem to go for either an RX8, a 911\boxster (if you can't afford a 911 and don't mind being seen in a car that shouts this out also lol!), or in the case one lucky bloke, I know a green gallardo (but saying that he does go over to italy with his wife on touring in the car and is contemplating track days, he isn't a berk that drives one round and round the same city centre on his own at night at 10mph), so guess that's not bad if you can!

Spending £30k+ on a golf = Fail!

You can get a brand new specced up S4 for a little more than a specced up Golf with a tuned 4 pot

If i want a hatchback ill be waiting for this thanks

Spending £30k+ on a golf = Fail!

Some of us want a new car now (well in 4 months time ). For those who can wait 2 years, then the RS3 may be a good choice against the R.
http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/Audi-A3/239873/

Though, I reckon the RS3 will be pushing £40K before you even look at the options list.
Title: Re: golf R prices and spec on website now!!
Post by: p3eps on 01 November 2009, 20:44
Yup... If I was to wait for every new car that was coming in the next year or two, then I'd never have a car!
Theres always going to be something around the corner.

As I previously said - a TTS was about £33k basic and the TTRS is about £43k
Given that an S3 is basic £27.5k (and the 2010 NEW model will probably be more) the RS3 is likely to be at LEAST £37k.
Add on some options - and thats £40+k.

It'll maybe have 335bhp etc etc etc... but its in a totally different price league.

I do agree with the Golf R price being nuts.
It will be interesting to see how the RS3 is priced, I'd guess starting at £36 (especially as they're basically part of the same Group!)
You can sort of see the road map on prices vs performance in the VAG group performance hatchbacks

Nah the R32 was way different than the GTI IMO. It was a sweet soudning V6, and looked more sutble in some ways yet striking in that lovely metalic blue.

When I orignally ordered our current mk5 GTI, and then the Mkr5 R32 came out a few months later I thought bugger, dam and blast!. But when they dropped the V6 (hoped for the R36) for the Golf R and saw the price... this time round pref the GTI mrk6.
But that RS3 (and I hope in a more slinky body than the current one), seems very attractive and will burn a hole in me when the dam thing comes out.

I agreee, also the Scirocco weighs 100kg less than the Golf. The Golf may be quicker off the line due to the better traction, but once rolling I think the Scirocco will be slightly quicker.

3dr Golf - 1521kg - 180bhp/ton
Scirocco - 1419kg - 189bhp/ton

Better looking, maybe slightly quicker, cheaper and better specced as standard. Both great cars but I think I'd take the Scirocco.

I notice that Park Assist is no longer listed as an option. Is this because:

(a) VW has deleted it as an option because no one is getting it
(b) it doesn't work with the R's AWD system?
(c) it is already included as a standard feature?

Here's hoping that it is (c).

I'd told him not to fax through my order yet as I want some clarification on the lux pack / convenience pack debate!

I'm also seriously considering Leather now, as the standard seats are going to get in a right mess!!

According to the VW press release, it will take 2 weeks before any orders are actually confirmed - so they won't be able to give you a build date until after that.

Dealer has sent me a PDF of the latest 29.10.2009 Golf price list - including the R.

You can get it here (for some reason the link from the GTI/GTD/R brochure page is broken):
http://cdn.volkswagen.co.uk/assets/common/pdf/pricelists/golf-vi-pricelist.pdf

Reading through - it appears the Winter Pack on a R in conjunction with bi-xenons and leather consists solely of "Heated windscreen washer jets".

So, I'm wondering, if it's worth it for £225... any views?

£225 for heated washer jets  £330 for heated seats and washer jets makes heated seats worth £105.... hmmm, I sense unfair price loading there.

I had a look at the price list you posted - and yeah, its a bit of a con!
I grudge paying £330 for heated seats on a £30k+ car - but I feel they're a necessity.
If I'd ordered leather I wouldn't have bothered with the Winter Pack... as £225 for heated washer jets is a tad excessive!!

Yeah - DOWN to £225 with leather - JUST for heated water jets... as everything else is covered by leather / xenons.

Reverse Cam is a gimmick - but its only £155 and may be useful on occassions.  It costs about £500 to retrofit if you change your mind!

Again, Lux Pack for £120 seems cheap compared to retrofitting folding mirrors for £600+
Its another non essential thats handy to have... but £120 on a £34k car is a drop in the ocean!

I'm afraid I couldn't buy the Focus as I don't own a Burberry cap!

On a more serious note... I did actually go in to enquire about one about 2 months ago.  I was wanting a test drive really - but as they're so rare at the moment, the dealer could only show me a customers order through the back.  The interior quality was mince - although it did come with stuff like Recaros as standard.  The front of the car looks mean, but the back is horrid (I think that with all Focus's though).  Although it looks mean from the front, I could never drive one as I'd be embaressed to be seen.
Its more powerful - but slower 0-60 than the Golf, and will likely be slower round the track too (which remains to be seen).

I'll stick with the Golf R thanks.  It costs a bit more, but it will be worth a bit more when I come to sell it!

You can do lots of comparisons against which second / third / fourth hand cars you can get for the same price - depending how old you want to go!
The Golf R is new.
Its got a 2.0 engine - with (a claimed!) combined 33mpg.
It'll have a 3 year warranty.
You can get fixed price servicing for 3 years for £250.
The road tax is £215 per year.

Buy a 3 year old Ferarri, Porsche etc, and see how much your servicing costs... or if something goes wrong - its costs ££££'s!

The few reviews I've seen of the Focus said it handles and drove great etc etc etc - but it needed a new set of tyres after a couple of thousand miles.  The tyres are a 'special' bridgestone compound specifically for the Focus.  I bet they're cheap!!!

My Golf R is £33k with my discount - not £37k.  Ok, its got no leather (which is the main expensive thing), but neither does a FULLY SPECCED RS!

I highly advise you go and test an S3, possibly the most soulless car ive ever driven!

I hear a lot of people say this but I dont get it. Ive never driven one so wont comment on that but on paper the S3 is just an ED30 with a bigger intercooler, a different map, some other minor engine mods and 4WD. The ED30 has plenty of "soul" so surely more power and 4WD should only enhance it, would love to drive at some point but don't know anyone at with one :(

I'm sorry but http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSP_MvxtoeU (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSP_MvxtoeU)

Do you really think they will be faster round a track than the Golf?? I think the difference in power and the clever diff in the focus will make up for it.

You do know the R is 4wd Khare? It'll wipe it's bum with the RS round a track. The RS is all shouty mouth and no trousers. I'll admit for the money it's not a bad car for driving like a hooligan but the running costs will probably bring it up to Golf R money over a few years.

Hard to explain. You just get out and dont feel anything, doesnt emote you in any way. Its bloody quick, just boring!

+1. It is hard to explain - it's just too capable, perhaps. Or maybe the engine. I found the S4 I mentioned earlier to be the same - quick, confortable but bland somehow. My main concern with ordering an R before getting to drive one or even read a test report is that it might be the same. Can only hope 35 profile tyres and VW's chassis tuning brings some involvement to it.

BTW for those that are thinking it's priced to high think on this.

1989 Rallye brand new and adjusted for inflation £39400
1989 G60 Limited brand new and adjusted for inflation £49250

Golf R looks reasonably priced when you look at those.

some people enjoy having the car do all the work. i mean if it wasnt 'too capable', then people would say its a poor engine and very high price etc etc. so you cant really win. when the RS3 comes out, im sure it will be a different story.

How long till we see the first R review?

What car were claiming their first Golf R review this week (4 Nov) - whilst I don't rate What Car as it is more of a consumer mag than an enthusiasts one, it'll be interesting to read what they say.

Nah - that's the Scirocco R they are reviewing:
"Check back for our first drive of the VW Scirocco R on November 4."
http://www.whatcar.com/car-news/golf-r-and-scirocco-r-on-sale/244499

Looks like there's some embargo on Scirocco R reviews until tomorrow.

No Golf R ones until January 2010 I'm afraid.

Autocar review of the Scirocco R to give you a rough idea of what to expect from the R.... except the Golf will have 4wd, more power and more practicality!

Car review too

Both sound good - lets hope the Golf R ones are better in another couple of months!
I'll pick up a What Car on my way to work today for a squiz at what they have to say too!

i just dull as dish water, like a flymo or hairdryer soundwise and lowdown power is quite laggy delivery next to the V6 3.2 and can not imagine that engine in a golf is going to be that much different to the s3, sure it will feel a bit sharper etc hence why i havn't put my order down for one yet and im normally one of the 1st in country for the last few years to buy golfs on launch. P.S not saying i won' buy one but ill test drive one first esspecially after test drving a S3

Scirocco R review on Auto Express web site now.

This bit got me excited:
"The exhaust note has a harder edge than Audi’s S3 – which also uses this turbo engine – and there’s a wonderful rasp from the tailpipes whenever the DSG changes ratios on full throttle."

I wouldn't get to excited about that word RASP, i here that about small engined motorbikes  GROWL and ROAR was the old R32. ive no doubt the rocco will be a hoot to drive, it will be like a chipped ed30. Golf R i fear will be very S3 like unfortunatly

Thats the brochure I bought off eBay in September!
Is there no sign of an English one yet?  I went onto VW UK and did the brouchre request for GTI / GTD / R - and the package that arrived had no R brochure in it!

VW UK usually don't have brochures until the cars are arriving in the country. So don't hold your breath...
