sounds like a MAF sensor prob, these dont always show up on vagcom (but do some times!), you can remove the sensor from the air intake pipe but you need tamper proof torx driver to undo the special screws, then use and aerosol solvent cleaner to blast and crap off, make sure your air filter is clean also (best off fitting a new one) then give it a run and see what you get then, if still pant figure could mean the MAF sensor is cream crackered they cost around ?80-90 to replace, if your not sure on stuff though get it checked out to see if you have any fault codes showing, for example a dodgey temp sensor (for ecu) can make you ecu think the car is constantly cold so it will run rich hence the low mpg figure, hard to diagnose on here but give it a go cleaning your MAF sensor 1st (only ?3 ish for a solvent spray) then if your d.i.y.ing id try a new new temp sender at ?20 before you think about buying a new MAf sensor!!
