Bluefin Acting Strangly
« on: 09 December 2008, 10:42 »
Hello ppl, below is an email I just sent to Blufin support, does anyone have any ideas on what the problem could be? Similar to the problems discussed in this thread also...http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3973322

Car: 2007 MK5 Golf GTI.
Bluefin: Stage One, recently sent hand unit back for firmware update so ECU counter would not be activated.

Currently have had Bluefin installed onto my GTI for 30,000Km with out any dramas.

However over the last month or so the car has been acting a little strangely. When driving easy around town or on the highway for around 10-15Km the car will boost strangly, peak and hold 14-15PSI instead of the normal 17PSI of the Bluefin software. As a result the loss of hp and torque is noticed straight away and the car feels quite flat. The only way I have been able to stop this is by turning the car off and then on again, once this happens the car will boost and pull how it should with Bluefin installed.

A few days ago I reflashed back to the stock file (1st time since recieving the unit back from the firmware update) and then back to Bluefin to see if it would fix the problem. Unfortunately it did not. After driving easy at higway speeds for a few Km's it dropped boost levels and acted like I stated above.

Today I spoke to VW and decided to revert the ECU back to the stock file once more. This time however I went for a long drive to see if it drops boost levels etc on the stock file. It did not, car ran fine.

I am wondering if I require an updated Bluefin ECU file or if It is a deeper problem with the Bluefin software.

It may be a problem with the map, it may not. A remap can highlight other problems with your car that are not apparent with the stock tuning. Do you have access to vagcom or other fault reading gadgets?

Unfortunately no, Bluefin hand controller is supposed to according to the website but mine has never been able to.

Been talking to VW about it and have the car booked in next week, hopefully a code does show and they will fix it for me. Although I'm doubtfull this will happen if the problem only occurs when flashed.

From memory another member on here had an issue with his Bluefin map and took his car to SC headquarters to have it fixed. I believe his was a map specific fault too, but his din't "act strange" as yours does. Hopefully he'll be along later, but if my memory serves me right he went on a JKM RR day and had a poor show on the dyno, which highlighted the issue.

Do a search for the JKM southampton RR day and it should be in there somewhere, or a general search for Bluefin issues.

I'm happy with the power it makes when the map is working correctly...It's just when it reverts back to stock power levels whilst driving that is frustrating. At present there has been no CEL's and the car runs perfect whilst flashed with the stock file

Hopefully SC will get back to me in the next day or two!

Hilton,
I would love to know my boost pressure.  How to you measure it on your car?

Measure it with the Defi boost gauge I have installed  Have it installed in an OSIR vent gauge pod.

Just a thought,
Have you tried running the car with the boost gauge unplugged from the original VW wiring?

I would have thought the Bluefin map is most likely to be showing up another problem which standard settings are not touching .... only with the increased power is the problem 'visible'.

As you've had it trouble free for such a mileage I can't see how it has gone wrong ........ unless the map got corrupted in the firmware upgrade ?
