upgraded window reg clips!!
« on: 05 June 2004, 22:39 »
hello peeps!, just fitted american style window reg clips (cast steel) along with new cables and driver unit, ?30 from vw and took me about 40 mins, well worth the dosh as i now know it wont happen again!!, if your plastic window reg clips fail, do not get conned into paying ?63 for a complete reg panel from vw (which has plastic clips on!!) ask for the metal upgrade repair kit and fit em your self!! which id have had some batteries in me camera as would have been a good gowto guide for the mk4 section as this is a common problem and unless you have the metal clips YOU will suffer with this problem at some point in your cars life!!

I replaced mine last winter, the window dropped on the windyest and wetest day going!

Def worth knowing abt, i complained to VW HQ abt dealer trying to sell me whole regulator instead of just the clips , and trying to get a refund, but they werent having it! even tho its a known fault!

Last year when we had teh 4 motion this happened to us, I used teh American part number and got the replacement metal clips from my local vag

Did you know in the USA all Golf's had a recall put on them and had there clips replaced with metal ones, why can't they do that here? Even if they don't want the cost of doing and fitting them when they do break they could give you the replacemnt part free

same story with the coilpacks on the later turbo models, no recall here.. although they do replace them free when (not if) they fail.

they will only replace if it was still under warrenty though wont they? Mine went few weeks ago. AND my rear went aswell even though it went in november! I think the rear 1 is a dif problem though, seems to be a worn cog! which gets worse the more u try an use the window. wanna get it looked at today now its back from the body shop wiv a shiny new front end!!

Its all better now very shiny, but now the windows have gone again! and shocks are squeaking like mice!!aarrgghhh

I wish I'd read this two days ago! Just paid ?70 for the regulator and my mate ?30 for investigating then fitting it (better than main dealer, they wanted ?140 fitted).

I shall be calling the dealer ask a 'new' customer to ask about the metal clips though.

And I certainly wont be paying them ?256 for a 60,000 mile service, even tho its overdue.  This might amuse you......I asked what they did for ?256 and was told that they changed the oil,  and checked all the lights, etc..........my immediate reponse was: "f**kin ell for ?250 I can check the lights myself"

I had to replace my clips last week. I went to the VW dealer and asked for the replacement kit which cost me about 35 quid.
The part number on the box is 1JM 898 461 and it is just called a 'Repair Kit'.
BTW this was for the front passenger door of a 5 door GTi.
I was told that the odd numbered parts are for the passenger side and even for the drivers side so I s'pose that would make the part no ....460 for the drivers side, but don't quote me on that.
I fitted it myself as the dealer wanted to rob me of 75 quid.

Personaaly i'd say its a pain in the ar5e but knightrider done it himself, i havn't got the patience or tools to do it propaly will take over an hour easy enough though.
You probably havn't go the metal ones unless a previous owner has had the miss fortune of a dropped window! Even if he did unless you ask for the metal uprated kits they will giv u the old plastic crap like they did with me last december!
