jsut called AVS and they said the rubber flange is original vw, so when buying a weber, it comes with a 10mm aluminium spacer that bolts to the original pierburg rubber flange. So the bit you posted jon, was the correct bit.
£30 delivered. Cheers guys, will let you know how i get on. In the meantime im gonna put some electrical tape around the crack and see how it goes, as ive had to miss school today cos i got to the top of the high street and car started spluttering big time, so i had to turn around and limp back to my house. Will let you know how i get on.

FIXED!!!!!!! well, it was the rubber flange. Old one was cracked and the inside was perished, also, one of the 4 screws that hold it in place, was missing!!! the numpty that fitted the carb previously must of lost one and said aahhhh feck it, 3 will do. So it was both the missing screw and the flange that caused the problem. car feels so much better now, and it doesnt backfire like a machine gun now. well chuffed

my car actually made the backfiring sequence of an F1 (i know it doesnt rev to 19k rpm and i know it cant be heard miles and miles away, but it made that fast backfiring burble, it wasnt huge pops, it was like a long sequence of small pops.
listen to this video at 0:32 seconds. when he upshifts, that machine gunning sound, thats what mine made. sounded glorious.
