could be carb icing, does it happen instantly or does it get worse the further you go

further i go the worse it gets. only happens when im at around 50 - 70 mph. if i bury my foot down and fly down the motorway then its ok. could be carb icing, but ive gone back to the standard air intake set up, with the elephant trunk into the wing and everything.

does that include the pipe and shroud on the exhaust manifold, and have you checked the warm air flap is actually opening when the engine is running :)

If you have jammed it on the hot only setting, then there is no point having the hosing to the wing! Take that away, as i suppose you could be cooling down the hot air too much, and causing the problem again. Also, check for sure that the hot air pipe is attached properly to the air box, might not be a good fit?

hot air feed is well attached. I'l try blockin goff the cold intake with some cling film or foil.

Change your fuel filter. It could be clogged causing fuel starvation.

right...been having a play with the carb, and its done not much joy. little bit better though, if i stop, put it in first, and set of normally, the car kangaroos kind of, and then picks up and goes, but if i set of slowly then its ok. its wierd.

It sounds as if you are getting a lean cut. Run the engine up to temp, then get hold of the carb and gently rock it back and forth. (If these carbs are the same as the older Audi 80 carbs, it will have a rubber sandwhich plate at the bottom of it and these split.) If the revs go up and down with the rocking, then this rubber plate is split.
Check the float level as well.
