Took my car for a drive today.....
« on: 03 June 2004, 21:17 »
Hi guys and Gals and MK4's .....

I took my car for a drive today, really tested out the revo chip, very quick, but..... (and please let me know if any of you have had this problem) When i put my foot down there is a moment of nothingness then power starts gushing in, change gear moment of nothingness then a gush of power, change gear.. and so on!!

Getting a but concerned now so got into 5 gear, and tried to kick down so changed in to forth (oh by the way the pulling power in fifth is amazing!) no problem car just went!!

Ive always driven NA cars so a Turbo is new to me, is this the charateristics, ie wait for the turbo??? or is this bad turbo lag?? Also ive been advised to book in a Rolling Road session. what will this do? will it iron out this problem, make the engine more efficent/ responsive, release more horse power??? ???

Oh and yes I know it would help, if I got a new exhust, to ease the stress off the turbo, (maybe next month :-\

The revo is a standard software, so there is nothing that can be changed there to iron out your problem. Our little turbos dont spool up too fast (as you said full exhaust may help this) so you will feel a little lag, especially when you're waiting for all that boost to kick in and put the smile on your face  ;)

Hello mate,

Your post doesn't state if you're running a dump valve yet.

You may find that this will help to minimise lag when getting back on the juice after a gear change. Most of the turbo boys will agree that the standard system is a bit pants, and this problem is accentuated when you start running more boost.

A proper dump valve will allow your turbo to spool up faster after a gear change, as it won't be trying to spin up against residual boost hanging around in the system - its much more efficient at releasing the boost when you come off the throttle.

This will also have the effect of preserving the life of your turbo, as spooling up against residual pressure can cause premature wear.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replys,

S11EPS, ive got a diverter Valve. When i got Revo'd, Vince changed my standard one for a TT one, he said its much stronger and will last longer, espically with the boost the revo will give.

Don't get me wrong the car is much much quicker now and the 'moment of nothingness' lasts for about a second if that!

Oh this morning I took the car out and set the car back to stock via the sps switch, and noticed the turbo comes in much later then when the cars in performance mode. so maybe i'm just being fussy expecting instant response........or am I :-\

Give Vince a ring and ask him about the 4bar fuel pressure regulator and associated revo software, you pay for the FPR but the revo upgrade is free! Should be good for a few more ponies, also think about getting the SPS3 module so you can tailor your boost/timing to your exact needs.

Hi guys

Had to cancel my appointment wiht stealth (work and stuff), but was informed about Owen Developments, they do the Revo stuff there as well!! So went down there to day and spent a good hour talking and testing the car roud their site then 1 hour 30mins on the R/R.
I was a bit shocked at the figures i got :(espically from the revo setup)

Standard Golf GTI (Turned back to stock via the sps) 148bhp/6798rpm
147.1 lbft

Revo Golf GTI (As fitted by Stealth) 187.6bhp/5813rpm 201.6 lbft

Revo Golf GTI (After Owen Developments RR session) 207bhp/5841rpm
232.2 lbft

Yes i'm happy now, but i thought the revo would give me 200+ anyway!! ::)

But hey its there now!! oh and they also optomised the fuel and gearing for me all at ?65+ VAT (I hate thoese three letters)!!

Hmm very strange, did stealth not put your car on the rollers when you had the original revo ?
If they basically did a custom map i'd expect a little more from your car considering the engine (DBW)
I suspect your car may have asthma, get a filter and exhaust sorted  ;)

Thanks Chris

Yeah I thought I was owed a few more BHP, and OD did say get an exhaust fitted, (its coming next month) :)

Talking about filters what should i go for, a complete induction, or just a panel, I have heard this can up set the engine is this true???

The oiled filter kits such as k&n 57i can upset your MAF sensor, i'd steer well clear of anything like that.
Simple solution would be a drop-in k&n panel filter which just replaces your standard element in the air box, not too pricey either.
Best (and most expensive) upgrade would be a true CAI (cold air intake) which involves removing the airbox completely and fitting ducting down to the vent in the bumper. Carbonio and Dynatwist seem to be the most popular choices. You'll get a mighty induction roar with either of those, and the sound of the boost dumping will be much more noticable.
