Little bit of info to add to the mix, vw and audi press cars are renowned for being 'fiddled' with before handing keys over to journos. 2 instances i've seen with my own eyes.. an R32 reaching close to 170mph (what happened to the 155mph limiter? what else was done?) and Vaughn's brother had an ex-press Audi S3, sold as standard, one of the older ones that were supposed to be 225bhp.. took it to a rolling road day and it made over 260bhp with a non-standard, unidentified map.

Phil can I also refer to the lap times of the TOP GEAR test track which prove without a shadow of a doubt the R32 is the fastest golf

From what I remeber it was almost 2 CLEAR SECONDS FASTER THAT THE ED30

ok, we are talking in a straight line, not a test track R32uk, the edition 30 dsg IS faster in a straight line then the R, only when bends and Race circuits are brought in, is when the R can go round them Faster.

If something is faster it means from point A to Point B, doesnt have to have a series of bends roundabouts etc in between

The Release of the R36 passat is Now VW's fastest Production car available.

And wheres the video of an edition 30 going around TG's track, has it been shown on the box??? i havent seen it.

I didnt realise we were bringing conditions into it...   Surely the best way to find out which car is faster would be to put it round a track??

Either way, over here in the UK where approx 60% of the year it is wet... I would still say that the ED30 will be getting beat by the R32. So the only way the ED30 will quicker is if the track is straight + the weather is dry + its a DSG. Hardly fair to say the ED30 is the quickest most powerful golf..

im quoting from Vw driver issue when the edition30's were released in March issue 07 which previews the DSG version( jan07 for the manual). It states very clearly, "makes this GTi, the fastest excelarating vehical that Vw has Produced to date surpassing the Formidable R32"

We will both had to agree to disagree!!, but in the wise words of hir Topher, back on subject!

tbf that quote is just a opinion... where as the 2 sec quicker round the track is fact! (both driven by the latest Stig by the way)

Looks like we will just have to agree to disagree like you said

I have always take 'most powerful' to be the power of the car, R32 being the range topper having more bhp from factory.  Yes the Ed30 does jump over it once remapped but that doesnt count - its like saying put a turbo on the R32 and it then becomes more powerful again... and we go on...

If your in the market for a very well designed car, great engine then at these prices the R32 should not be turned down even taking into account it higher running costs.  A lot of car for your money, and in turn it will probably have an effect on the GTI prices if you think about it.

Good point there Neg.. I dont think any type of car will be immune to the latest slump in prices... and from what we have seen on here the running costs of the R32 are really not that much higher (barr tax of course)

Just to add my 2 pence worth!
I do enjoy my Ed30 with a passion during the warm dry days, where traction is not an issue. However, those days are very limited!
Now, with the cold and rain it's IMPOSSIBLE to use anywhere near full power and it spins in 3rd and sometimes 4th gear.
I'm pretty sure an R32 would murder an Ed30 simply because you cannot use the full potential of an Ed30 for at least 60-70% of the year.
 :undecided:
It would give my 360 trouble as well, as thats even scarier in this weather!
To be honest, I didn't like the chrome grille on the R32 and found the Ed30 a good balance between exclusiveness and power/equipment.

The wife wants a newer car and said she would have mine but not sure if I want to swap yet - for this kind of money though an R32 could be an option!  Dont know why but I have never considered an R32 myself - maybe as I felt they were over priced but now....

Like you say apart from roadtax the running costs seem very similar.

Well said that man!!!!  Seems to be alot of "bad feeling" towards the R32 on this forum for some reason.Dont knock it till you try it i say.Absolutely nothing wrong power and speed wise with a MK5 R32,maybe with basic mods e.g milltek etc. Remapped GTI,S arent the be all and end all of everything!!
I personally like 4wd security when pressing on NOT a new set of tyres every 1000 miles

Of course IMO!!!!

That's it, im off to fit 4 wheel drive to my ED30!!

I don't think it's bad feeling towards the R32 Chris, just the eternal debate of 'my Golf's quicker than yours'

Lets just face it guys, in some conditions one or the other is likely to be quicker - end of!

If you want refinement and a silky V6 and top of the range luxuries = R32

If you want balls out tuneability and the head turning looks (IMO) = ED30/GTI

Amen!

Anyway, back to the topic

went to VW and 3 doors isn't going to work, as much as I would like it to but having 2 young kids I am really going to struggle, so I have decided I am getting an R32 (after finally deciding I was getting a GTI ) but it needs full leather and 5 doors

Keeping my eyes open
2008 R32 DBP gone. 2008 GT TDI going 2009 GTI coming soon!
