So how does a Carbonio work?
« on: 03 November 2008, 19:38 »
So I'm just trying to understand how a Carbonio intake works. AwesomeGTI's site says it increase's torque over a wider range, but I don't see how.

By this photo it looks as if the stock system is just a scoop intake to the filter that is in the black rectangle in the engine cover, so how does the carbonio improve airflow? Is it because it is bigger?

(original link: http://www.golfmkv.net/blog/archives/16)

It also has a very different shape, how does this work?

Sorry if I'm sounding thick, but I'm trying to get my head round the way this thing works. If anyone could help I'd greatly appreciate it.
Thanks!

from reports from others on here the Carbonio doesnt give much gains. There are other types that give you an more improved Torque figure.

well for a start, the stock air intake takes air from within the engine bay as well as the outside air, so it sucks in warm air which isnt great. the carbonio just takes it from outside. I believe its also due to the shape which causes the air to flow inside differently which help.....

at the end of the day... your not gonna see amazing anything with it, i have it, and after install i did feel SLIGHT better response from the pedal, but thats probably down the the panel filter more than the intake.. still, better than standard and thats wot matters, looks sexy too :)

i was under the impression (from this very forum) that all sticky on carbon fibre bits made mk5s faster.

if you look under the lid on the snorkel attached to the bonnet, you will see a baffle, which is angled to reduce airflow, and most of the air bypasses this, and goes into the engine bay.
The carbonio does not have a baffle AFAIK, and therefore the flow of air is uninterrupted. This may not increase bhp, but it may improve responsiveness/ reduce lag.
The baffles can be carefully removed/alterred to improve airflow, and is much cheaper than a carbonio. :nerd:

perhaps if you added some carbon fibre to your mk2 sharpie, you might be able to get shot of it
