20-09-07 Changes to the Requirements for Registration Plate Checks at MOT Test
Vehicles with incorrectly displayed registration plates already fail the MOT test. From Monday 1st October the requirements will be tightened to further align with the regulations. This action is being taken to aid eye witness accounts, traffic enforcement cameras, Automatic Number Plate Recognition systems and road user charging technology.
Registration plates must be present, secure, show the correct registration, colour and be the correct size, format and font. MOT testers are not required to carry out physical measurements but will complete a visual inspection.
VOSA has produced a leaflet ‘Registration Plates and the MOT Test’ which outlines the changes being made and can be viewed here: Registration Plates and the MOT
VOSA's MOT Standards Manager John Stephenson said:
“We would urge anyone going for an MOT to ensure that their registration plates comply with legislation. The best way to do this is to consult our new leaflet which has been produced specifically to assist MOT customers. This action has been taken to help us to save lives, make roads safer, cut crime and protect the environment.â€
