I got stopped at a set of lights the other day for a 'census' , got asked the normal stuff , then the presiding traffic officer (to ensure the census takers dont get abuse), politely 'suggested' that I change my 'kid on motorcycle sized plate' for a legal one

....I'm sure you'll have to change it to get through your MOT too.

  good point ive never thought of that!! is the plate part of the MOT thow

edit: and i dont think john_o will need an MOT yet

Thanks for that peeps, I phoned TT shop to ask what they suggested since it came with no instructions, and they said to remove the stock grill and put this one in its place, but that sounds too dodgy to do at home imo, so im glad others have simply put them over their existing ones! This is what ill do, its just think about the plate as well since both need to be done at the same time really!

I will have to give the plate a bit more thought, shame it wont stick with pads!

....I believe that the plate is now part of the MOT and, if not yet, the plan is that it will be sooner rather than later. The rules on what constitutes a legal plate are both strict and very detailed - You must display the car supplier's full address for example.

Plates fitted to models registered after 1 September 2001 that aren’t embossed with the name and postcode of the supplier and BS AU145d British Standard symbol will result in an automatic failure. The move is designed to make it easy for testers to spot non-road-legal ‘show plates’, as these don’t have a BS symbol.

yor small plate wont have the BS mark and it will fail on incorrect size too

from Vosa

20-09-07 Changes to the Requirements for Registration Plate Checks at MOT Test

Vehicles with incorrectly displayed registration plates already fail the MOT test. From Monday 1st October the requirements will be tightened to further align with the regulations. This action is being taken to aid eye witness accounts, traffic enforcement cameras, Automatic Number Plate Recognition systems and road user charging technology.

Registration plates must be present, secure, show the correct registration, colour and be the correct size, format and font. MOT testers are not required to carry out physical measurements but will complete a visual inspection.

VOSA has produced a leaflet ‘Registration Plates and the MOT Test’ which outlines the changes being made and can be viewed here: Registration Plates and the MOT

VOSA's MOT Standards Manager John Stephenson said:

“We would urge anyone going for an MOT to ensure that their registration plates comply with legislation. The best way to do this is to consult our new leaflet which has been produced specifically to assist MOT customers. This action has been taken to help us to save lives, make roads safer, cut crime and protect the environment.”

....

The thing is though, guys, that if you get stopped by the Police for something other than your plate, they'll see your technically illegal plate anyway and may then be inclined to add it to any other offences. It could make the difference between a stern lecture and a ticket, also depending on your attitude when spoken to.

Better safe than sorry imo. Keep your speed reasonable and don't take the p!ss with things like number plates and most Police will use some discretion.

I have a smooth US spec front grill/mask, and run a short number plate fitted to the lower centre grill, used to run it in the windscreen as it looked so much better!
