Thing is, though, is it the reverse DV that's sorted it, or is it the vac hose??  Don't want to try the DV the other way around in case I disrupt things!!!

If the vac hose was kinked like that, i'd say the new pipe solved the problem and not the dv reversal.. but that won't do it any harm either way. I think i need to get busy with photoshop to draw some diagrams to help explain how the dv works and what reversing it does .. could take some time.
