If all that was changed was the timing, coil and leads etc. I would follow the 16v idle setup guide in the maintenance section, as presumably your CO2 needs re-setting to match the revised timing.

After that your into a trial-and-error situation to find the cause of the problem. The most common culprits include:

1) ISV unit needs cleaning
2) Air leak
3) Idle switch has broken

After that there are LOADS of other possibilities. Check out this master list I made:

Injectors are screwed. Get new ones. Use Bosch as they are the VAG part but in a different box and cheaper. Even it doesn't cure the problem, injectors only last till 80,000 and then the spray pattern starts going wrong. At low revs the spray pattern can be more of a dribble hence your rough idle and stalling.

Also check the lifter pump as well.

Both are possibilities. My 16v had a the same problem after a full rebuild and change of everything. The only thing we missed were the injectors. Replaced them and the engine was a completely different animal.

Good suggestions to add to the list, but not the most likely culprits by a long shot. I would definitely try the other things first before assuming your injectors are faulty etc.

We had same problem after the rebuild. Heaven knows what it was like before the rebuild as it wouldn't even start.

Rough idling, stalling when hot, was all down to shot injectors. Took us weeks to find that out.
