I think you need to do a bit of research into this subject yourselves and not just believe what the dealers say.

5w30 is thinner when cold (first number) and thinner when hot (second number) than 10w40.

That said I think both oils suit the 1.8T, I have used 10w40 since I bought the Golf and had no problems and others have always used the 5w30 and also had no problems.

I used the 10w40 as I was recommended to by a friend who works for VW/Audi so I knew I wasn't being fed lies lol

a mate of mine got hold of some castrol slx fully synthetic 5w 30 oil for my car, i then spoke to the vw who also sell it and they said its the best stuff to use, fair enough, however, this is only available in 1 litre bottles, so when i asked about a larger volume of oil, vw recommended something different, vw own oil!

Always used 5w30 so have garage when services, always used 5w30 on my Ibiza too... I'll probably use thicker 10w40 at high mileage but ont on 60k

Somehow I doubt my vw dealer will be anywhere near 5L of synth for £12.

I've really been thinking about this, I don't want to knacker my engine I'm para enough as it is lol.

But its on 144k now (AGU) and I run 5/40 fully synth quantum platinum but it's not dead quiet as such but not a rattly mess or anything..

But wonder if I should go for the 10/40 semi now and change it as often as I do anyways every 5k...

Help me decide
