Our VW dealer on the Isle of Wight, shouldnt be too much different from yours..

Somehow I doubt my vw dealer will be anywhere near 5L of synth for £12.

Checked VW dealer this morning - Quantum Platinum £42, Quantum Gold £68

What's your dealer selling? If I could get 5L of fully synth for £12 - I'd resell it on ebay!

Look at the link TheDave just posted, roughly what i said it was   :afro:

That's semi-syth 10w40 - Turbos require 5w40 fully synthetic.

Following are suitable

http://www.vwspares.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=1354

http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Volkswagen_Golf_1.8_1999/p/car-accessories/engine-oils-and-car-fluids/engineoil/5w40-engine-oil/?521771271&0&cc5_248

Non-synthetic oil creates black sludge which can block oil pickup. Also very high temp of turbo destroys mineral oils. Semi-synthetic is not good enough.

Having said that I don't believe all synthetic oils are necessarily good enough either. I expect there are lots of unknown brands on ebay that aren't actually synthetic at all. And who knows whether it's worth paying more for one synth oil over another.

My dealer actually recommended changing to 10W40 as my car has over a 100000 miles and a result my oil consumption has gone done, the engine is quieter and is much smoother.  Lots of people on here are using this oil with no problems so I think that suggests that it is ok for turbo engines

The 5W bit is for cold starts and if you compare 5w to 10w you'll appreciate why it would be good to stick with 5W. So a 5w40 is better than a 10w40 even for high milers on those cold starts.

As for oil leaks on high milers - it's usually recommended to move from a Xw30 to Xw40 as it's a bit thicker when warm. But vw recommend Xw40 anyway.

The important point is that the small sump capacity combined with the very high temps associated with turbos makes a synthetic oil crucial to avoid sludge build up and temp breakdown.

A semi-syth oil would only be suitable for cars that do motorway miles, never get driven hard and get changed frequently (3000 miles).

Mines done 103,000 I've worked at an independant and now a main dealer and Quantum I believe is a VW/Audi owned Oil that I believe is designed for the engine so its used quite a bit at dealer. I rung up our VAG parts delivery service which again use Quantum and they recnomended 10w/40 semi. I told them I want a decent oil as I'm anal about it and they then told me 5/40 Fully is what to buy as that's what they use on the higher maped engines eg the 180bhp engine in the TT etc but for every day use of joe bloggs their gonna just put 10/40 in aren't they. So I always use Quantum 5w/40 Fully on regular oil and filter intervals...That's what I'd reconmend. :)

I am a Lubrication engineer and ive gone for Valvoline Max life 5-40 fully synthetic.
Its designed for higher milage cars (mine has 101000miles) and has special addatives in it "extend engine life" and seal coditioners to "reduce oil consumption".
I wanted fully synthetic as it is usually better at higher temps for the turbo.
Does it work? Who knows but my experience with Valvoline is its pretty good stuff.

A couple of guys where I work swear by usuing Slick 50 Oil addictive treatment when you replace 750ml of your oil change with it. I may use it next oil change due to the fact mine is a 100,000 miler lol.

5w40 quantum from the dealers is only about 7quid more than that and can be had cheaper online I'd just stick with that mate.

I've used 10w40 Castrol once and wouldnt again. The car was quieter and more efficient on the quantum.
